I've been trying to work on an Alternate Universe fic for the last few weeks, and I know more or less the story I want to tell with it, but I'm having issues trying to work it into the established timeline of events, because really, the timeline is vague and leaves a lot out, and in some places just plain doesn't work, imo. Basically what I want to do is contract the overall timeline down to a smaller scale; moving the background events up in the timeline, while also expanding the duration of ME2 events to better fit with "reality"
So the thing i'm struggling with is really a 'moral dilemma'; do you think it's acceptable to contort the timeline to gel with the story? Does the fact that it's AU especially make it okay for me to take those liberties with it in order to tell the story I want, or does it make me a lazy writer?
And since it's just for-fun-fanfic, should I even care? It's not like it'll ever be anything more than something I do to pass the time and make my brain not turn to garbage.
To put it another way, and to borrow the sentiment of The Shirelles...
Would you still love me tomorrow (if tomorrow was really yesterday)?

well in my opinion i agree that you should do what you think is best, its your story write it how you like. If you think you should move up the timeline do so. Its how you should want it. Not how the reader wants it.
also something i did in photoshop(i just added text).

That is one of the nice things with playing in an AU. You can pretty much do whatever you want, as long as you have some vague attachment to the lore.Kolotosa wrote...

This is pretty much what I figured. I haven't really read any AU stuff other people have written, so I was just curious whether or not it's something that people find irritating or what. I mean, it's silly, because the events are automatically going to be different, but I don't know. People are weird.

Since it's an AU fic I think it'll be fine to contract the timeline!Kolotosa wrote...

My automatic, knee-jerk response there was "Yes, dear." Imagine my disappointment when that wasn't one of Shepard's responses.
