Paragon leanings probably fall more in line with his personality and thought processes. Generally I think Kaidan would just prefer a Shepard who makes decisions intelligently, with due regard for the consequences, even if it's not always a "paragon" choice.

I had a hard time seeing my purely Renegade Shepard with Kaidan in ME3, because the Renegade choices just seemed so short-sighted, dumb and mean-spirited that I couldn't imagine him seeing any redeeming quality in her worth his time. In the prior two games the Renegade options were a bit more balanced. In ME3 they just made me ill.

Was lurking and caught the tailend of this conversation. My canon is a renegade and I remembered wondering back in ME1 if her personality was too strong for a soft-spoken Kaidan. (I liked the snarky lines and take-no-prisoners approach the renegade path offered.) I enjoyed the moments such as being exasperated with his inability to be direct (since he was being cautious due to regs) and y'know, to give her 20 pushups. Little stuff like that. When Horizon rolled around in ME2, I was just floored when the conversation got heated and lines were drawn in the sand. He yelled because he cared. He walked away because he was sticking to his principles. I realized that paragon Kaidan and renegade Shepard were yin and yang of sorts. They balanced each other well. This harmony was reinforced beautifully in ME3 when Kaidan was looking out at the stars, angry with the Reapers and what happening out there. The renegade interrupt wasn't to tell him to suck it up, it was to tell him to channel that anger, to fight back harder. It was supportive. Even in the romance scene when Shepard can choose the "evil distraction" line to sidestep him, he still came across as knowing Shepard well enough to say, "Yeah, no, you DO need to relax, that's what I'm here for." In the final goodbye, when Kaidan asks Shepard if she is afraid, the renegade response is that the Reapers are the ones that should be afraid because she was coming for them. Kaidan has this amused look that is just wonderful because it seemed like he "got" renegade Shepard, like he admired her intensity. (It's like listening to Jack talk crazy-tough to her students, but you know she loves them hardcore. It's endearing to watch.)

Basically what I'm saying is that I had my reservations about a renegade relationship with Kaidan at the start, but it evolved and it felt natural and complimentary as it wrapped up. I actually love the red and blue symbolism between Shepard and Kaidan since it reflects their morality as well as their default armor colors. (I kinda wanted to match Kaidan for screenshots, but just didn't feel that blue was her color. That's OK! =p)

Disclaimer: I play a renegade without the extreme choices like killing for the lulz (rachni, Mordin, shooting Samara's daughter, etc). It's easy to max out the morality without going for a scorched earth approach. The psychopath renegade, yeah, I'd have a hard time seeing him or any LI being attracted to someone like that. Well, except for Morinth. =p

It's not the "renegade" conversation options that are the problem for me -- I actually pick a lot of those as well, and I do think there are certain times where it's more fitting (like in the conversations with Kaidan in the hospital if you cheated on him, as I've mentioned before). It's the actual renegade plot decisions and their shortsighted ramifications for the war effort that make Shepard look like...i don't know, a sociopath. Take curing the genophage example; if it was just a matter of Shepard saying "I'm not going to cure the genophage because the long term consequences indicate a very real danger for the galaxy, and I can't in good conscience let that happen", that would be one thing.

But instead, she lies to the Krogan, let's them think that the genophage has been cured so that she can manipulate them into fighting for her, murders her supposed friend and then has to lie about that, omits the truth of the mission success from Hackett, and then, in the case of Wrex being alive, shoots him out a goddamned window on the Citadel, which is then again covered up by a bunch of lies to protect her ass. Even if I, as Shepard, truly believe that curing the genophage is a bad idea because of the violent nature of the Krogan, the way in which the story forces the events to unfold leaves an incredibly bad taste in my mouth.

To me, nothing about that is in the true spirit of what the renegade was in the prior two games, which was more about direct action versus diplomacy. Instead, in this example, it's sneaky, underhanded and just brutally cold. Garrus might be able to forgive that kind of behaviour, but Kaidan? I don't think so. Or at least, I certainly wouldn't want him to.



Edit: I started this reply before I got to the Disclaimer at the end of the post, so disclaimer to the disclaimer, the above is what I was referring to earlier when I said "full renegade", and it seems like we're in agreement that full, pure, **** renegade Shepard doesn't deserve Kaidan's love. Or anyone's.

But I spent several minutes typing it out so I'm leaving it, damn it!

Yeah, I always associate him with tea, specifically green tea, for some reason. Probably because he's so zen. But I think he'd be given to coffee on occassion, in social settings where he didn't want to be rude, but would take it with lots of cream and sugar to dilute the flavour and/or for a total caffeinated calorie hit.

OK, just another reminder about this. But I'm actually going to make this even easier for you. I don't see him being particularly picky.  He'd drink whatever you put in front on him.  Shep would definitely enjoy som Bailey's and coffee with him...with Kaluha...and whipped cream. 

Kitty Kaidan likes the whipped cream...
