I always thought he was hanging around Shepard's door hoping to talk to her but too shy to really start a conversation.  Every time she goes in or out of her room he pretends to be busily fixing the snack machine so that she doesn't get too creeped out by his always being there even though he clearly ought to be on the bridge with Joker.

Wow, I got way behind here. I've definitely got some fanfic reading to catch up on. Graceyn, loved the art. I know I'll love the chapter when I get to it, which will be first thing tomorrow, and I'm looking forward to this beach house thing too. Yay, y'all have been very productive and I can't wait to check it all out!

I also have big plans to catch up on some MP and hopefully unlock something good. My commendation and victory packs were a little meh.

Drunk Kaidan: I think I'd enjoy that. I suspect he might cut loose a little bit, maybe dance a little or tell funny stories about stupid things his biotic squad did, or lighter stories from BAaT - after all it wasn't all broken hearts and biotic kicks, I'm sure. But then after a point he'd probably get self conscious and get really quiet - like about the time he might start slurring his speech, I bet he'd call it a night. Of course, if it were just him and Shepard... well that's a different story.

@ Top pic: Seriously, what was Kaidan doing all the time on the SR-1? As the Staff Lieutenant he's in charge of the marine detail on the ship. And now I know a little bit more about that since I've been reading the Confederation saga. (I'm also almost done with Basilisk Station, thanks all for the excellent recommendations) But help me out here: is Commander Shepard officially under the Alliance Marines or the Alliance Navy?  I know the Marines are the ground troops with the Navy and she does a lot ground part work sooo... marine? I get confused. Anyway, if Kaidan's the liaison to the marines on the Normandy, why on earth is he always hanging out by himself? Shouldn't he be in the mess with other crew members or something? And what was he doing in that first scene on the bridge with Joker?  Well, besides the hilariously awesome banter.  Does he have any kind of piloting skills at all?

So, yeah. I hope that kindof made sense. And I haven't even been drinking tonight. Promise.

Ah, we have reached the most frustrating part of mass effects codex and rank system. /shakes fist/. In the real world, marines and navy are different. They report to the same dude, but they have different command structures and ranks.

So, in the future.....

Since the game is in the future /handwave/ we could say its now a hodge-pog of ranks due to the alliance military being from all the nation states. When you look at the ranks codex, major is equal to captain and is placed above Lt. commander. Which is not how it is in real life...... Oh, and kaidan's ranks, staff lieutenant and staff commander? they dont exist in the real world, which makes it hard to figure out his damn job....Why are you always messing with that stupid panel, we have mechanics!? 

When you think about it, mass effect marines cant go anywhere without a navy ship, so they must all fit under one command structure. You cant have marines without navy, and navy cant protect without marines. According to the codex, there are no branches, there is only Alliance Military. "the divide b/w the naval personal and the ground forces, the marines, is small. " Note that marine is not capitalized, its not its own branch. There is no Alliance Marine, only Military, aka Navy. ( here is only zuul) So most likely the fleet admirals, like hackett, who them around and/or the ship's captain. If you fight on the ground in the ME universe, you are a marine, a ground pounder. A naval marine and you know they are had specialized training. 
 
Shepard goes from saying We are marines ooh rah (Im a marine, not a tourist) , to saying shes in the Navy( when she mets Eve)  I also think kaidan flip flops too, but it says he's marine. I swear ashley is the only one who knows what she is. But I am fairly certain shepard is a marine, she fights on the ground despite holding a ship command position. I guess you could say She is in the Navy but is a marine, not in the Marines. So saying "Im alliance navy" is correct, as there is only 1 branch, but its dumb and makes my head hurt.

 I think Kaidan would be a sort of funny/touchy drunk. He has a lot of control it seems when normal so I easily imagine him loosing his inhibitions and maybe going a bit wild.

OT: Started another playthrough, this time with my adept John who let Jacob die, and I got through Mars recently but not without encountering this:

Kaidan: "Damn Shepard, I know you're angry but couldn't you just shoot him instead?"
Shepard: "No, bastard moved too fast for my sniper rifle."
Liara: "I see your relationship with Cerberus has changed quite dramatically."
Shepard: "Yeah, I tried telling Kaidan that. . ."

I read a lovely fic once that explained this so it kinda head cannoned it for me.
Basically they are very thin on the ground due to it only being a "shake down" run and as Kaidan has tech skills he offers to help out around the ship as he got bored. Being a new prototype ship there are still a few bugs and issues that he keeps trying to fix having particular issues with said area of ship outside of Sheps quarters. When he's sat in the co poilot chair he's no co piloting but fixing the consol there.

If I find the fic I'll let you know as it made a lot of sense (at least it did for me)

On another note I met the amazing Raphael at the weekend at ComicCon! 
I thanked him for all the bits and bobs he does for all his fan eg Audio blogs Horizon letter etc. He is awesome...

i had this thought, what if it wasn't Kaidan choice to not Join Shepard, what if alliance or Council told him to not go even if he really really wanted to even if he was with cerberus. That if Kaidan did Join Shepard it would cost him everything. Even tho he was so in love with Shepard, that even if Shepard Came back Kaidan wouldn't have a job no more. So he had to agree with alliance/Council terms no matter what.

Even if it got Shepard angry he would do it, as his life in the Alliance is best for him. Even if it would cost him his friendship or love for Shepard.

i know i get all these ideas and i just have to write them down

First of all - he is promoted to mariner's rank Major (not Capitan), which defines him as a 100% mariner, from what I know - Shep is also initially mariner, but is set as CO of the ship. And anyway - bith mariner and navy have same CoC and subordinate to same Admirals.

As for his job on SR1 - that's how I headcanoned it for private use, so feel free not to take it or to disagree. I think that any tech-related officer (and sentinel is tech+biotic combo) aboard must have some kind of routine watch job, like monitoring current numbers, state of ship systems, course, and (if necessary) correct things, cooperate with Joker and\\or report to CO. Does not mean they are allowed to do pilot's job (though, very likely they were taught some basics of piloting as well).

As for being with other crew members - should I remind you that he was not too much fan of crowds and companies? Chalkwas states directly that he prefers beilg aside. Does not mean he never talks to them, also does not mean all of them considered him non-human or something, but still.

@chibievil Nice photojob, I like his suit, really. But there is slight lighting\\shading problem - especially seen around neck\\collar, neck is shadowed and collar - lit. 

Oh, almost forgot, about drunk Kaidans. As I see him - he's too serious about his biotics to let himself loose. The only in-game momet where I think it might happen is ME2 start. And I highly doubt it was "happy drunk" moment...and also hope no one was hurt...

Nrieh - I really only was thinking about in 1, not 3, but his promotion from "boss of marine detail" to "navy guy who creates spec ops division" does point out, as Pony mentioned, how ridiculous the Alliance military is. So I'm just gonna go with Alliance Military makes no damn sense. If anyone has a better suggestion, put it out there.

And Frozen, that story, omg, hilarious. But I see Shepard doing that to Kaidan as more likely. I guess you never know. Gotta look out for those quiet ones.

I tried to make a Sims Kaidan and Shepard once. They didn't turn out so well. Sims Liara though, was awesomely blue.

Look here for war assets. just use Ctrl + f and type "scan" and it'll show what planet, cluster and system it's in

as for best with normandy, other than Tali, Garrus, Liara, Chakwas, Adams and joker, i'd say James. other then that i'd say Tali with the tech chats they'll have, maybe not EDI with the tech chats

Technically speaking, the USMC and the RMC (and whatever Canadian marines are called) are in their countries' respective navies.  We have a Department of the Navy, NOT a Department of the Marines.  The Marine Corps is contained with in the Navy.  They do have different chains of command, but only to a certain point.  After that, it's all admirals.

BW, in it's general militaristic confusion, was attempting to convey this.  But it's hard to say what's lack of research, and what's BW having to make up to fit what it needed in the Alliance.

Therefore, Shepard IS a marine, Kaidan and Ashley are Marines, but they're all three in the Navy.  Anderson, it seems, was never a Marine, he was always a sailor (though they may have clarified differently in the books -- I haven't read any of them).  Joker is a sailor.
