I think part of the reason that they are so drastically different in ME3 was becuase of complaints in ME2 that they were essentially the same character

Well, they were not much alike from the start, they were different, in many ways. And they never actually were something "one", not even in ME2. And worst part of it is that while they don't have much in common (and never had) - both many players and designers still treat them as just something called "VS".

Technically, yes, they still share scenes (mars, coup). But following that logic - all squadmates "share" their combat roles in missions, but I've never heared someone saying something like "I took 2 SM (squad mates) to the Citadel". Or "this time I romanced LI", why such depersonalization about Kaidan\\Ash?

Probably, separate DLCs could help here. Because If they ever make "VS"-dedicsted $$ DLC in which Kaidan will shoot assault rifles and pistols without even using a biotic barrier or tech power in cuts once again - I'd be really upset...

Damn straight! My mind might actually implode if I ever saw that though, so maybe Bioware are right to save us from Smexy overload....on second thoughts, nah, would be totally worth it.

I'd risk head-implosion for that.  :D

Must be just me but I can't figure out how to read past part 22, though I know I have read considerably further than that before. Is there another link or somewhere where you can see the whole story without all the comment thread links?

No not yet, eventually it'll all get posted over at ArchiveOfOurOwn.com but it's way behind the Livejournal link.  The LJ link only auto-opens up to part 22, you need to scorll down and open the comments from Alishatorn.

I wonder. Is it just me or anyone else is also gets crazy when people treat KaidanAsh as ONE character (VS)?..

There is an ongoing thread about why would Undina promote himher to spectre. I don't understand how can there be some univresal motivation about it, and even less I understand how people really make no difference between them. I know BW screwed both, and they share same damn scenes (horizoncoup) which prevents Kaidan from using his biotics in both cases...I feel there is something wrong about this. Could tolerate it for ME2 (as not much difference for 1 cut and a pic on the table), but in ME3 they ARE hell different. And Kaidan does not get drunk aboard, lol. I don't like how they treated Ash in ME3, but that's not the matter. They are different, anyway, no matter if I like her or not. Thoughts?

Definitely do too.

One thing that got me thinking about ME3 Kaidan was this too:

I guess with the Reapers arriving and all the crazy crap happening this doesn't mean much, but I always found it strange that as someone who is really big on self control (ME1 convos, just about every one of them) he enjoys alcohol.
Now I myself am really critical about alcohol for personal reasons (and for the self control reason to boot) so I might be a little biased/prudish here, and I doubt Kaidan is a stupid drunk (probably more a jolly/sleepy one), but this is something I found interesting. I would of thought, even if he knows his limits, that he would want to stay away from anything that could cause a loss of any type of self control.

No, I don't eat people's head just for having a drink, I'm not a monster.
Also coming from someone who's never been drunk or drank anything besides a sip of a strawberry margarita when I was 12, so maybe I'm seeing this in a naive way :o

I had the dinner scene after doing the mission with Jacob, so apparently I locked out that whole conversation about the Ex-Cerberus scientists being good people. he just says "we should go snack on the citadel!" after we had dinner while sitting in the crew room.

I think he doesn't trigger the post-Cerberus Scientists dialog if you do that mission immediately after the coup, but I could be wrong. Try doing a different one, then Jacob, then see if Kaidan will talk about it.

I did the Jacob mission, then read Kaidan's email about dinner on the Citadel, and it overrode his convo about the ex-Cerberus scientists. When I reloaded and didn't check my email, the convo triggered.

Such a pity his non-ambient convos are so easy to override/miss. I missed the Investigate options in the hospital the first time, the convo about his parents twice, and the convo about the ex-Cerberus scientists as stated above. @_@ Come on BW, just let us love Kaidan!

Welp I'm too far ahead to go back and do many hours all over again. I don't really feel like it. But still :crying:
Feels like I heard him speak a heck of a lot more during my first playthrough compared to my second one now. Still a bit miffed that it takes so long just to get him back on the crew after Mars. :?

uhm..may be that's because of having a glass of red semidry at the dinner, but I've lost the point. It's Ash who has drunk scene. Kaidan does not have one. Or am I missing something BIG?..

Where did you get info about his attitude to alcochol from? As I headcanon it - you;re right, I also think that he's very careful about drinks, same as about anything that may affect self control.

Oh no, he was never drunk in game, I was just guessing what kind of drunk he'd be; a jolly one or a sleepy one were my guesses. And the guess on his attitude of it comes from how he speaks of it.
You can buy him whiskey while he's in the hospital, he talks about having "more than a few beers"  during the dinner date, the sex before we die scene.
Not a big deal, but it was just something I noticed and huh'd about. Just like the "the future flashed in front of my eyes not my life!/my life flashed in front of my eyes..." thing

You can "have a few beers" without loosing your self control.    I know you admit that you are not a drinker.   I don't think Kaidan taking a drink now-and-again as a sign he was changed from ME1 to ME3.

I'm acutally more miffed at the fact that the majority of his dialogue and presence in the storyline comes from him not being on the Normandy crew. Earth, Mars, the hospital visits, the coup, we see and hear lots from Kaidan (and Ashley), then we get them back, and they each have a couple convos and tons of ambient dialogue. It's just sad that once they're on the Normandy again, they're basically background noise. :? In fact, most of the squaddies seem to suffer from this, once they climb on board the Normandy, they're used as Shepard's support and not so much story-wise.

Yep, I noticed this, too. I got all of his convos the first time through when he was on the Normandy, and honestly I was surprised that there were only two before the romance scene. I think I miss ME1, where after each big mission they would have something to say.

Well. It just felt like there was less dialogue in general because I felt like we had a lot less input in the conversations. :/ Still loved the game and thought the Kaidan romance was the best one, but... a good amount of things could have been better.

I agree with you. It's pretty sad that Kaidan is only spotted on the citadel once and that is for his date. After that there is like 2 convo and the rest is auto dialouge. I've never missed ME1 so much in my life just because I can actually have a convo once I'm on the Normandy.

LOL, it makes sense for Jiminy Cricket to be the narrator, but it's still funny to think of Kaidan being a Disney World tour guide. I'm planning another trip next year, I'll have to check that out, just because.

Hi fellow Kaidan fans! I've been a lurker for the longest time now, but to finally celebrate my appreciation for that ass Alenko and for you guys, I'd like to share some Kaidan-y tidbits I discovered from my various playthroughs:

-not only do you do the Rachni mission first before Tuchanka: Turian Platoon to get more Kaidan banter about Ash, but save the Turian Platoon mission AFTER Priority: Rannoch. You get the very illusive elusive Tali and Kaidan dialogue about Ash in engineering after Tuchanka: Bomb (yes, it exists in-game). Also after Turian Platoon, you can also get banter between EDI and Tali--here EDI consoles Tali about seeing the relationship between Lt. Victus and his father as similar to her own. However, bring Liara along with Kaidan in these Tuchanka missions than Tali (because Tali takes priority from Kaidan) to maximize his banter (lol shockersat Liara not taking banter priority).
>>you need to have gibbed set integers 10314 or 10330 to 8 though to get the bugged engineer banter (PC and Xbox only)

-take Garrus along with Kaidan in the Ardat-Yakshi Monastary mission to get the illusive okay I'll stop now elusive Kaidan priority banter (he gets to speak a lot in this).  Not only that, you'll get that funny left broken elevator banter about him biotically floating.

-for Eden Prime before entering any of those houses, move straight ahead a bit to a cliff overlooking Prothean ruins and you get Kaidan banter about the possibility of Liara studying dinosaurs (haha whut?)

-take James along with Kaidan in the Geth Fighter Squadrons mission to see Kaidan's overflowing concern for Shep entering the Geth Consensus

-for N7: Fuel Reactors, I always let Kaidan save Capt. Riley--makes my Shep so proud of him, even demanding Riley to thank Major Alenko

-if I recall correctly, for Sanctuary take Garrus and Kaidan for Kaidan banter priority (he speaks a lot in this too)

>>will test for Kaidan banter priority for Ex-Cerberus Scientists and Admiral Korris missions and give you guys the necessary updates (Liara and any ME2 member takes priority for the Ex-Cerberus thing, and Garrus and Tali for Admiral Korris, though).  Also, while James takes priority during the Admiral Korris mission, it was rewarding to see what he'll do to the AA gun controls if you choose him to take charge (lol at Shep's disappointed face).

>>sorry for the long post and for any grammatical error, English isn't my native language afterall haha.

*Edit1: Oh yeah, forgot about letting your other squadmate take control of the AA guns in the Ex-Cerberus mission, Kaidan and Shep will have a bit of a cute banter together. And isn't it obvious that I take Kaidan EVERYWHERE lol?

**** Spoilers for some Special, Elusive Kaidan Banter****(for those interested) sorry in advance for the looooong post.

Kaidan and Shepard about Ash in the Shuttle after Tuchanka: Bomb
Kaidan: You know, Shepard, this reminds me about Virmire, of Ash.
Shepard: Yeah, I was thinking about her too.
Kaidan: It's been a long time, but it still...
Shepard: You know, she'd give us a hard time about talking like this.
Kaidan: Yeah, she sure would.

Tali and Kaidan about Ash after Tuchanka: Bomb

Tali: I cant believe he did it. Just...jumped down there with the bomb (if Tali is brought on the mission).
OR
Tali: And he just went down with the bomb? (if Tali is not brought on the mission).
Kaidan: He knew his duty. He couldn't let that bomb go off.
Tali: It almost reminds me of...(if Tali is bought on the mission)
OR
Tali: When I read the report, it brought back memories...of Virmire (if Tali is not brought on the mission).
Kaidan: Virmire. I said the same thing to Shepard (if Tali is brought on the mission).
OR
Kaidan: Funny, said the same thing to Shepard on the shuttle ride back (if Tali is not brought on the mission).
Tali: Sorry. Guess my mind was elsewhere on the shuttle ride back (if Tali is brought on the mission). It's not the same. I know that. I've seen friends die other places. Back on Haestrom, where Shepard rescued me from the geth...But this wasn't being killed by enemy fire. This was...
Kaidan: Sacrificing himself for the mission, like Ash back on Virmire...
Tali: How do you accept that? Knowing that a teammate died for you?
Kaidan: Look...you would have done the same if it was you guarding the bomb back on Virmire.
Tali: To stop Saren? Yes, if I had to.
Kaidan: Well, then that's how you accept it. Because one day, it'll be your turn, just like Ash and Victus, you'll do it for the mission.
Tali: Thanks, Kaidan. Sorry to bother you.
Kaidan: It's no bother, Tali. Nice talking to you.
~My Shep: Hello, guys? I'm right here? I want to talk about Ash with you guys too :( Oh well, I'll just stand here and ogle that sexy Kaidan voice over the speakers...

Kaidan and Shepard's Broken Elevator Predicament in the Ardat-Yakshi Monastary
Kaidan: That elevator's broken. We'll have to take the long route.
(if Shepard is not a biotic)
Shepard: Could you learn to float down off a rail like that?
Kaidan: Well, not in the next ten minutes.
(if Shepard is a biotic)
Kaidan: Unless you picked up the knack of using biotics to float.
Shepard: We're both out of luck on that one.

Kaidan is Kidding about the Dinosaurs at Eden Prime, Liara
Shepard: Look at that. Bits of Prothean tech sticking out of the ground like an old bone.
Kaidan: You ever uncover a dinosaur, Liara?
Liara: No, dinosaurs and other fossils would be paleontology. I'm an archeologist. I study artifacts left by sapient species. The two fields are completely different, and...you were joking.
Kaidan: Nah.
~My Shep: You guys are ignoring me again :(

Shepard asking Kaidan to save Captain Riley in the Fuel Reactors
Shepard: Kaidan, bring them home.
Kaidan: Absolutely.
(after combat)
Shepard: What about Kaidan?
EDI: Nothing, Commander. No one's answering my hails.
~My Shep: May the galaxy die now? D:

Shepard Asking Captain Riley to Thank the Major in the Fuel Reactors
Capt. Riley: Commander, you saved our asses. My team is in your debt.
Shepard: Thank Major Alenko.
Kaidan: Just doing my job.

Letting the Other Squadmate Handle the AA Guns in the Ex-Cerberus Mission
Shepard: Ready Kaidan? Just you and me.
Kaidan: Bring it on.
~My Shep: /was implying something else entirely and wasn't sure if Kaidan got it

Bonus James' Disappointing Attempt at Handling AA Guns in the Admiral Korris Mission

Kaidan: There's the AA Gun. One of us is going to have to shut it down. (~you'd think my Shep would have gotten the hint)
Shepard: James, get on it. (~lol apparently not)
James: Uh...tech's not my specialty, but I'll pull a few wires, see what comes out (scratches his head and proceeds to kick the controls over and over again).
Shepard: /I am thoroughly disappoint face D:

@Kunari801 Ah, thanks for the kind words, just sharing the Kaidan love after I've sucked enough of it from you guys (being a lurker gal and all). I just screenshot a lot of Kaidan stuff. It's just my way of giving back to the Kaidan community (and you guys can request specific banter and I'll seive through my screenshots if I have them). Yes, take Kaidan with you at Eden Prime! He has wonderful banter with Shep in the shuttle ride going there and after landing (plus, that dinosaur comment lol). The after-landing banter is specific to your Shep's history (Kaidan may respond to this).

****Spoilers for Eden Prime Banter (if you want)****

In the Shuttle, Pre-Eden Prime
Kaidan: We lost a lot of good people when Saren and the geth hit this place.
Liara: And now with Cerberus here, Eden Prime's colonists are under attack again.
(picking investigate dialogue wheel: I remember Eden Prime.)
<Note: Paragon option says: These people have it rough and Shepard says to Liara, "They deserve better".       Renegade option says: Focus on the artifact and Shepard says to Liara, "We'll avenge the people of Eden Prime, but our first priority has to be whatever Cerberus found". These cancel the Kaidan-specific banter>
Shepard: (to Kaidan) Seems more than just three years ago.
Kaidan: A lot of memories here. Jenkins and that damn geth recon drone.
Shepard: And Nihlus.
Kaidan: Guess we have a lot of people to remember down here...even if we're not fighting geth this time.
(picking paragon dialogue wheel: You're still with me.)
Shepard: Not a lot of people have had my back from the beginning. Thanks for coming.
Kaidan: I wasn't going to miss this one.
(picking renegade dialogue wheel: It wasn't just geth back then.)
Shepard: It's always been the Reapers. They used the geth, they used the Collectors...
Kaidan: And now they're using every species they can find. And Cerberus is just as bad.
Liara then renegade interrupts the entire conversation lol.

After Landing
Kaidan: It's deserted.
Liara: Come on. Let's see if we can find the dig site.
Shepard: This was a beautiful colony once.
Kaidan. Colonists come back after Saren and the geth attacked. They'll come back again.
(if Shepard is a Sole Survivor)
Shepard: I grew up on ships. Lose one, you can always move to another.
Liara: But you'd still remember.
(if Shepard is a Colonist)
Shepard: They rebuilt Mindoir. It wasn't the same.
Kaidan: I didn't say it'd be easy, Commander. But they'll be back.
(if Shepard is an Earthborn)
Shepard: The city on Earth where I grew up was hard and dirty. I can see it as a warzone. Eden Prime doesnt deserve this.
Liara: Nobody does. *courtesy of I LikeTo Doodle (thank you for satisfying my OC-ness :D )

@Graceyn Thanks for the compliment~ And I must say finally, I love your Shep/Kaidan story. Awesome character studies, not just for your Shep and Kaidan (but I love their characterizations the most), but for everyone (like Thane~). One of the fics I like that is so  thorough with all characters.  I keep a special tab open the entire time ever since (oh noes, my stalker tendencies are showing /scurries away). Keep up the good work and have my eternal gratitude for me generating so many Shenko feels from your fic :3
