The "weapons are no longer restricted by class" is for Shepard. Squadmates apparently "each get two weapons that reflect their personalities."

And considering the shotgun is considered an impulsive CQC weapon in most video games, I am not sure what facet of Kaidan's personality it's supposed to be fitting.

Weapons will be no longer class restricted in ME3, if I remember correctly.

My memory is also rather foggy now, but I've heard something like "two main weapons and sidearm" or "main weapon and sidearm". And this leads me to the Kai-Shep-Lia screenshot: the thing Kaidan is holding is definitely not a pistol...

According to PSM3:

class restrictions on weapons have been relaxed/removed.

It's shotgun, I believe.

Oh no, not shotgun! I remember very well average length of life in battle of any shotgunner in ME3 except Grunt.
And for aspect of personality... maybe the fact that he usually don't let people get too close?

Not that I think it'd be any more Kaidan, personality-wise, but wouldn't "not letting people get to close" be a sniper rifle?  VG shotguns are traditionally associated with, "let's get up close and personal and blow peoples' faces off."

Assault rifle and pistol would make most sense to me, but mainly on account of 1) he'd have to qualify with the rifle anyway, even if he sucks at it comparatively, and 2) the pistol is his weapon proficiency in ME1.

So what you're saying is that the prominent codpiece on the male armor is intentionally designed so that, in the middle of a firefight, the guy can flip it up and give the enemy what for?

hmmm, Ashley has her uses, too (early on as someone who can hit hard and doesn't drain my unity all the time)

but then I'm not taking Kaidan with me for his abilities, but because I like him
and YES, you should have brought a sweater, my dear!

LOL
And I take Kaidan on every mission for a miriad or reasons, he's the LI, love his voice and he's the most useful squadmate in ME1.  I hope that they make him indespensible again in ME3 (like they did Miranda in ME2).

it's just a promo shot, maybe they showed him with something shotgun-ish looking purely for effect
personally I would have preferred the omni-blade ... we saw enemies use it, too, in the demo, so here's hoping your squadmembers can use it as well even if it isn't class-specific* as with Shepard
but if they get it it was probably too soon to announce

*and yes, since the Solider (combat/combat) class gets the omni-blade I keep thinking Sentinels would get the Omni-Spork ... and I'm trying hard not to picture it too often or I'll end up draiwng it

Female Cerberus armour has named piece too. And Miranda's armour from AAP2... (I was so shocked that misspelled this part twice).
For sniper rifle - as for me it'd simplier for Kaidan to keep majority on distance using biotics, not rifle, and switch to shotgun for especially persistent types. But this mind wandering is just to explain why shotgun, not because I think it's the best choice
