Afair Revenant has best damage output (with no DLC, and, no, I'm not paying for extra Liara mission not even for Eden Prime nostalgie chat). And squad does not care for weight and accuracy. So, Paladin as a pistol and revenant as an assault rifle, and black widow for Garrus. But I don't play on hard modes, if I ever need FPS and challange - i'll go for UT with godlike bots and\\or friends, not ME.

Revenant for manliness. For actually usefulness I give him the particle rifle. It has near perfect accuracy. Squadies can see through smoke and cover so I just follow the beam . Use the ammo piercing upgrade. Of course this is only if you have the From Ashes  DLC.

Since I already finished the game once in Insanity, I allowed myself to edit my savegame in my new playthrough and removed Kaidan's point in Barrier to begin with.
Yeah I know, Barrier is his trademark. I will respec him later when I will be able to buy him the six ranks in a row (for the -30% penalty on recharge speed).
Otherwise, I have the impression that the AI spams Barrier and never allows him to cast Reave

I never saw Liara as a surpreme biotic master really, but I can see her knowing a few more "tricks" seeing as she's had biotics for over 100 years.
The only thing that really miffed me about her and Kaidan is in the beginning on Mars.

(A/N: Actually managed 4 chapters this week, partly because I had a lovely long break, and mostly because I was inspired by a very kind commenter. A big thank you to Andrew for his encouraging words-- I really appreciated them, hun.

I've never played on pc so I don't know how easy save editing is, but you can always just respec squaddies in the med bay. It'll remove all allocated points. I do the same thing. I just leave barrier out for the most part. Reave is a lot more fun to play with.

I took that to mean he's thinking for himself more. He definitely felt more sure of himself in ME3. Very confident.

Nah, that's not on Mars, that's one of intercom dialogues on Normandy, when you enter her room. She tells him which skill to use when, and he disagrees, and sounds a bit annoyed, but still polite.

I think they really added this to voice your thoughts as a player through Liara. 
The last time you really saw him in action as a squadmate was in ME1, he was less pumped, and taking no initiative.
Now he's all grown Major and even teaching you how to take cover ().
So that's probably what you've been thinking all along, so they make her say that. (I know I was just internally squeeing cause i was too happy to see him again).

On a more concrete side, I see it at Liara rediscovering Kaidan's "assets"! Just replace "capable" by "hot" and you'll see what I mean
At that point, you haven't had the "i've got a lot to live for" dialogue yet, so, it would make sense having Liara showing some slight romantic interest towards Kaidan - yeah, you know you want him too

Oh, my...I have a Kaidan crawling around on my screen...I like it. Especially the pauses for gratuitous boxer posing with a pistol.

As for how I equip Kaidan...I tend to give him the Mattox first, then the Saber when I finally get it at Horizon.  For heavy pistols, he gets either a Carnifex or a Scorpion, depending upon the particular mission.

Yup, but we don't have acces to the respec in the medbay before Mars. And I want him to reave his way through Cerbies there. And then it explains why his barrier doesn't pop when Eva Core attacks him
