Hm, what if they go for Kaidan/Ashley instead? And when Ash gets left behind Kaidan can blame his superior officer (or the other way round, Shepard saves Ash and Ash gets to blame him).
Someone has to die in the movie(it *is* an action/adventure story), like the red-shirted security guard in Star trek. Bioware's already killed these two. Makes sense for the sake of mantaining lore that one of them dies.

I got that vibe too. They all seem a lot more innocent in the first game, and show a much larger array of emotions than in subsequent games. Which is fitting to an extent I suppose, by the end of ME1 they're battle hardened and they've seen the face of evil. It’s not necessary very satisfying though, and then you have to write a character that's still emotionally flexiable even after seeing impaled civilians turned into husks. Not an easy thing to do.No we're not! It's still about Kaidan!
Mmmh, Garrus is the one that got me thinking. I liked him more in ME1, i feel his character was more subtle then. I loved the mission with the Dr.Heart subplot. From ME2 onwards, I feel he's more of the one-read, caricatural character.

I didn't read the previous 2215, so I don't know if any of you has already noticed and discussed about the fact that Kaidan in ME3 is... well... dull.
He was my favourite character in ME1, always been loyal to him just to find out in ME3 that he just talks about Cerberus and duh ... STEAK! (and I am vegan, lol... but it would have been annoying in any case).
I don't know why the guys at BW decided to make him not only the least interesting character in ME3 but also the most stupid. Why? I know that in this community people love to hate him ("he's a whiner"), but there are also many people that love him, not only for his obvious good looks, but because he also has an interesting background story.
BW guys were apparently very commited to dumbing down Major Alenko...

True, of all of them (except for Garrus and Liara) only Ashley is a recurring character/squad member in ME3. Plus as far as I know Ashley kept her ****y attitude throughout ME3 as well.

It wasn't really discussed before because the majority of Kaidan fans are very happy with how he was written in ME3. Everyone can have his/her own opinion, but most will probably not agree with you on your opinion about Kaidan in ME3. He talks about a lot more than just Cerberus and steak. He talk about his mom, his dad, his biotic students, Horizon, his relationship with Shep (both friendly or romantic) and how it affected and changed him, he interacts with other characters showing his geeky side (the omni-tool discussion with Tali), his fun side (poker with Vega, drinking beer) and much more topic. He shows character growth both in regard to his own personal issues and hiw relationship (friendly or romantic again) with Shep.Eloise K wrote...

Yep, I may have other problems with Mass Effect 3, which is why I don't post as much these days,
but the one thing I really enjoy about the game is Kaidan. I think that he's well written, even if I don't love every thing about his characterization (him reacting to Shepard's working with Cerberus should be handled differently than how Ashley reacts, for instance), and I'd say his writing is pretty faithful to how he was portrayed in the first game.
I guess my biggest complaint would be that he doesn't get enough screentime or conversations, but I felt the same way about Tali and Garrus too. I don't think they were dumbed down, I just think it's symptomatic of how ME3 cuts down on real roleplaying and meaningful character interaction.

Maybe I just didn't get all his conversations? I only played through once, but somehow he and Tali felt like they got fewer conversations than EDI, Liara, Vega, or Javik. And of course romanced characters are a bit different, so I couldn't compare Kaidan to the rest (although I wish he had been there through the whole game, it was laaaaame having him taken away so fast).
