Yikes I feel weird having people see this painting when it's only half finished. Bad Kunari/Beep ><

Edit:  I don't mind that much, at least you can see the process.  I just prefer to unveil it when it's finished.  Right now Kaidan and Shepard are still unpainted so they look like the jolly green giant lol (and the hands are scary crazy so ignore that)

Nononono, WIP, i love it! So you're going greens/blues? Is it late night? Somehow I pictured this with golden dusky tones.

Kaidan, are you running for the Olympics in there?

Yeah I wanted it to be more apparent that the citadel was now orbiting earth so I tried to bring the "coolness" of space into it.  Plus the dark/night atmosphere gives it more of a romantic vibe, which I like, though I might have a warmer ray of light coming in illuminating them, we'll see.

@AndreasShepard I also like the "night" setting. The ambiance is more homey and more of the "personal-hidey-hole-ish" place--the sort of peace both Kaidan and Shepard deserve.

My thoughts exactly :)  even though this piece is ultimately Kunari's version it's pretty much the same as my headcannon since I definitely see them enjoying a quiet secluded apartment on the citadel where they can just enjoy each other's company free from the stresses of politics/war.

@Andreas: ah yes, there's totally Earth in there too!  My bad, i just woke up, didn't have my coffee yet. It wasn't there in your original sketch i think, that's why i had pictured this very differently. OK, so I understand better now. I didn't read the fic that goes with your illustration, too. You can all the more feel the Blade Runner vibe now.

On a side note, isn't the Citadel supposed to have an artificial sky? Not that i mean that what Andreas is picturing wouldn't be possible - it could be a toggable feature.

As far as I can tell the artificial sky only applied to the presidium, in ME1 when you look out onto the ward arms you see dark space and city lights while in ME3 there appeared to be one or two suns illuminating some kind of cosmic mist around the citadels vicinity so I just assumed that whatever system the Citadel was originally in had it's own day/night cycle but when it moved to earth it would then lose whatever kind of atmosphere it had in the previous system.
I know in the destroy ending when they showed the citadel fully repaired  there was no atmosphere, only the darkness of space around it.

The Wards are open to space. (There's an artificial atmosphere maintained to a certain height, but they've never bothered to indicate any interaction with light, so the Wards have no "sky".) Buildings that extend above the atmosphere are pressure-sealed.

The Presidium is enclosed and has a fake sky (and was supposed to have a day-night cycle, but it never got implemented).

The painting looks about right, except that the Ward arm in the background does seem a bit curvy (but perspective can be odd like that, so I don't think there's anything wrong with it)—the arms are flat (it closes up into a crystal shape).

The normal background is the Widow nebula; only one star, but it reflects off the gas and synthetic material (microscopic waste and such from the Citadel), which is why it always seems so bright.

@devSin: thank you for the thorough details, is it Codex / Avina lore?

I've never felt "home" on the Citadel, it just kept changing so much throughout the games, when i get there, i just think "oh, here we are on subquest and shopping grounds again", let's just rediscover the place AGAIN, which is a pity, really. The only thing that never really changed and grew familiar is the Presidium, and Presidium apartment views. So that's automatically what i associate with the Citadel > therefore, it was the obvious setting in my mind for Andreas' piece while it is actually nothing like it.

Surely you meant she LOOKS better than D. Allers.
Also, more useful.
Sexier.

Actualy, I was talking about personality as well... I mean...look at Mako and look at Allers...And BW did not even give her any lines...shame..But that gif fixed it

How does that make her a she, I wonder?

That's where languages show something more than words, like way of thinking and culture, may be. I don't know how is it in french, but in my language the only "female" military things I can recall are "rifle", "cannon" ( but not "gun"), "arrow", "bullet", "rocket"\\"missile" and "submarine". May add "boat" and "war". Most of guns, all of melee weapons, ground vechicles, ships and aircrafts are all "he". Even in poetic speech. Though, many of them could be given female names or names which are traditionally associated with "she" - e.g. Moscow, Russia, Volga. And then crew can treat ship "informal", according to it's name, not class or type. Eg. Normandy is also among "she"-toponyms (along with most of country titles). And it is theoretically possible to call this ship "she" (space ship, frigate - both "he"). But if they called our SSV, let's say "Arcturus", "Prometheus", "Vancouver" or "London" - from russian speaker point of view Joker's affection to the ship would 100% mean s\\s romance. 8P

@AndreasShepard It's interesting to see how work goes. But first seeing half coloured version and before reading that it's not yet finished, I thought you decided to make some kind of ghosty vision. Something like broken citadel, empty space and place where those two were once standing. But looks like it will become less ghosty.

I was joking at Pax of Doom's "Wild, unruly, and fun!" really, as if these were female attributes.

Mmmmh, we have gender for common and proper nouns in french too, but it's really just a language attribute, it has usually zero consequence/reference/intent on the "gender" of the thing it is associated with. I think it's really the music of the word that determines it, phonetics.

Using "she" in english for ships/vehicles, i was always taught at school that it was default in common popular english (especially for boats and cars), as a heritage from yes, affectionate military language.

Same thing may exist in french, but the actual "gender" of the noun takes priority.
As any noun i can think of for the Normandy would be male in french (le vaisseau, le navire, le Normandy), yes, as for you, the Normandy would very probably be more of a "he" > can't say how they translated that in-game in french. Also, the Normandy is quite obviously a galactic submarine, so yes, definitely "LE Normandy", too.
Mako would be male by default too. EDIT> the gender for the proper noun wouldn't be relevant here in french, for instance, you say "La France", but a very famous ship was called "LE France".

That's really interesting, i guess to translate that "tenderness" a military would have towards its ship/vehicle, french would use something like "beauty", or "jewel", which is not per say feminine.

Towards a gun, it's different, as you'd feel it to be more natural to give it a nickname, as the relationship is closer, more personal, something like "big Betty" for your favourite shotgun maybe? Posted Image I think Zaeed's got a thing like that, i don't remember well.

My Shep wouldn't do that. She doesn't have enough imagination.

Ahah, i KNOW, Allers is just plain ugly, i couldn't help.
