I agree, I love bioware games because of the companions, I feel so lonely in the elder scrolls. Sad. Atleast your husband watches you play, mine doesn't. My friends don't even play video games. Lol I'm the only one who has any interest in it.
I think this is exactly what makes Bioware games unique. So many memorable companions that you actually care about, and who change based on your actions. Most other RPGs either have no companions at all (which DOES feel lonely) or the NPCs, while memorable, aren't affected by anything you do, so it feels more like reading a novel and less like interacting with a person. I think it also adds to the replayability exponentially, as different combinations of companions will make the game feel very different, and your companions act differently based on the choices you've made. I don't know many other games that do this.
The only non-Bioware games where I ever felt so attached to companion characters are the Fire Emblem games, and I can see many of the same characteristics...
1) Characters interact with each other, so there is replayability around seeing different party make-up
2) Scenes play out differently depending on which characters are in your active group
3) Using the same characters more often rewards you with additional dialogue and backstory
4) No possible way to see all companion dialogue in one game, or even in two or three playthroughs
5) ROMANCE!
6) Multiple epilogue possibilities for each companion depending on how you used them in that particular game
This. That is why I prefer BioWare over Bethesda. Though, I do feel a strong connection to Fallout 3 because I have emotional investment in Dogmeat. <3 Also, I love Fawkes. I just wish there could be more depths to the characters.

I was thinking of changing the title when story spoilers came out, so we could warn people before entering that we'd be having spoilery discussions. But that hasn't been necessary yet...
