@Mimi Well, some dark parts of the fandom have pairing contests and I mostly see Shakarians have a pissing contest with Shenko fans on which pairing is better (BECAUSE HE'S ALWAYS THERE FOR SHEP!!!). There are thankfully and hopefully more mature and understanding Shakarian fans however, who understand that while they like ____ character the best (Kaidan for me), other people have preferences for their own reasons and maybe even for the lack of reason (taste). I like Kaidan a lot, but I don't chastise others and say "Kaidan is the best! He is Shep's one true love! All you other pairings suxxorz majorly!" Pairings are for enjoyment, not an olympic event.

As for the Garrus preference reasons, just stating those in a Shakarian mindset (I share some sentiments but not all). As for Horizon most people don't see it that way, not only by Garrus fans, but also for those that hate Kaidan or Ashley, which is quite sad actually.

I actually like what happened in Horizon, although Shep's writing could be better, because it solidified Kaidan's character for me; he has integrity for his ideals even if it meant opposing Shep. There is this heat of the moment anger, frustration and misunderstanding (because lol who comes back alive from the dead? And Shep suddenly working for Cerberus is unbelievable, especially since my canon Shep is a Sole Survivor. Conspiracy theories realign and then there: Shep maybe hid all those years and worked for Cerberus. How much mourning has Kaidan done not only for a person not actually dead, but a traitor to the Alliance and the person he friggin' loves who made him feel human? I'd get mad :D ) coupled by years of longing for each other, so the right words weren't exchanged, which is very real for me (in a relationship).

@Mimi Wah? Thane french kiss? Really? O_O

As far as I know, F!Shep initiates every romance she has in ME2 (not sure for M!Sheps because my Sheploo avoided ME2 romance like a plague...not that I didn't like the characters...just saving him for Kaidan even if I didn't know Kaidan would be romanceable by M!Sheps before lol). After talking about his dead wife ("I have a confession to make" Thane says I believe), Shep has the option to say "Thane, I care for you a great deal" to initate romance, "Focus on your son Kolyat" to not initate the romance. Forgot the exact artbook words though...it's something like the artists made Thane to appeal and be attractive to females and they based his art with that in mind, even interviewing female co-workers for their opinion. While it's nice to consider actual female opinion, basing a character for "sex appeal" (I'm looking at you design notes for EDI and Ashley in ME3) or "romance appeal" just...scares me and doesn't entice me at all. I like Thane's characterization in ME2 though, just not Shep jumping him.

@laika > Bah, we all know Kaidan's the best anyway (kidding here!! ... actually, not.).
Agreed about Horizon, of course ;-)

Well, that bit about solipsism kind of took my Shep by surprise > she was like, oh no, dude, please, not so many details please >>>

Thane says >

When a memory feels as real as life, it’s valid as life. Thinking about a moment brings back the smell of cut grass, the warmth of another’s hand on yours, the taste of another’s tongue in your mouth. Wouldn’t you rather lose yourself in such a memory than spend the night alone, staring at walls of metal and plastic.

And then Shep can say something that will make Thane say "i'm sorry, i didn't mean to make you feel uncomfortable" or something like that, but i don't remember well if there's a romantic answer. Ahah, i felt really surprised, i was kind of falling asleep over my mouse - and i didn't like his "flashbacks" - and then he goes about them tongues in others mouthes, ahah.

@Mimi Ah okay now I remember....about tongue in mouths lol he was talking about that experience with his dead wife I guess...but then Shep jumps him right after (awkward...)

Hmm, as for solipsism, Thane's flashbacks didn't make me uncomfortable. I guess because for me, Thane was making Shep understand what having a "gift" like that feels like. So to make that feel real to Shep, he uses very vivid examples to make Shep imagine that even the most intimate things and the minutest memories become very vivid with solipsism (I don't know about your Shep, but I guess my Sheps are thinking about another someone's tongue entirely)...lol for that last bit, I remember EDI's  "did I just vocalize that on the bridge?"

Me: Did I just write that out on the forum?

@laika > Ah, no i mean, i didn't like how the game rendered those flashbacks, i was yawning all along while i thought the idea was great. He just felt like this tortured dark romantic character, and the flashback "trick" made him feel a bit simplistic while they could have made him more interesting i think. I think i may have been distracted at that point, yes you're right, he was probably trying to talk about his wife, but i'm pretty sure this is an entry point for romance from the dialogue.

@Mimi Ah I see now~ Yup yup I agree with your sentiments...solipsism about tongues, then wife, then suddenly Shep's "I care about you a lot Thane" (awkward...). I like Shep jumping Garrus than Thane's because of this haha.

And I wish most mediums would avoid this dark, tortured, angsty guy trope already (ala Edward Cullen) in general.

@dstrawberrygirl Didn't notice your comment at first, but yeah I agree. Garrus' support is shown in the entirety of the game, whether romanced or not (particularly romanced), and it's such a refreshing (because it's such a stress-lifter) awwww experience. Given all the stress Shepard is experiencing and bottling all up, I wish Kaidan was like this in ME3 too because he was that way with Shepard in ME1, giving advice and awkward support (that lovely locker scene, anyone?). But he does fare better than the other LIs.

Hmm thread suddenly goes silent, I'll play some ME3 then. Will experiment a bit with that Ex-Cerberus Scientists mission for potential Kaidan banter priority. Will be back in a few...

. Given all the stress Shepard is experiencing and bottling all up, I wish Kaidan was like this in ME3 too because he was that way with Shepard in ME1, giving advice and awkward support

They could not make more of ME1 "awkward support" (though I don't see it as "awkward" in ME1, to be honest). They needed to show character progression. Somehow. Lack of "in-game" support leaves a lot of space open to headcanon, but does not break character. I doubt anyone in this thread seriously believes that 'romance-locked" Alenko could just ignore Shepard's stress and hard times (eg after Thessia) playing poker and writing reports.

But he changed, his feelings changed (not for worse or better - just changed), same as Shepard's. They can not have same chats and flirting as "just met" lovers (without direct ongoing Reaper threat)

So - writers did not make it worse, but they could have made it better - true. Which would simply mean more thorough work, to depict those pretty complex, multidismentional and long-term ongoing relations. And I agree that it's hard job - because if they failed some of such dialogues - we'd hate them for it. So, for me it's like "the less lame scenes - the better". Game has problems with current content as well, but nothing that I can't tolerate or fix with headcanon.

I'd be glad to get a real in-game Normandy talk, for example. Not about Cerberus - about two of them. As it is now - he moved in, invited her to dinner, hinted at one night together and came for a quick drink. Very... reach romance, huh? But, once again - I doubt they could write it ( Without fan-servicing, see evacnaoo) so that most of players were happy about it... And I'd rather not have pinky-hearty-lovely chat with gently looking brown eyes close-up and extra kiss....

(*sigh* Ok, may be I lied about the very last thing...I mean about extra gently looking brown eyes close-up...)

OK, here is my quick idea, I'm writing it gender neutral for Shepard so everyone can enjoy:

-----------
Kaidan has EDI convince the Citadel computers to "reserve" the Spectre office for privacy and arranges a special surprise to be delivered when he gives the all-clear. An hour or so later, he and Shepard walk into the Spectre office, as if nothing special is up, just general small talk.Once in the office Alenko challenges Shepard to a pistol shooting match in the range. While they two are in the range, Kaidan sends the signal via his Omnitool to setup the surprise.

Later, when Shepard & Kaidan walk out of the shooting range, a blanket and picnic is setup and ready for them to enjoy. A bottle of white wine is chilling in a ice bucket and assorted fruits and cheeses are arranged on a platter. Kaidan wraps his arms around Shepard, "Surprise my love." Gently nuzzling and kissing Shepard's neck, "I arranged for us to have the office to ourselves for a few hours."

Shepard turns in Kaidan's arms and looks into his eyes, "Only a few hours?"
-----------

Edit: Didn't proofread... spelling.

Before I skim the pages I missed (whew that's a lot; thanks guys ), business first. I added some bits to some of my Kaidan banter guide and transcriptions:
Maximizing Banter Guide-added significant stuff in the Ardat-Yakshi Monastary part, and added a bit in the Admiral Koris mission and the trigger for Diana Allers' media comment for Kaidan.
Usually Missed Transcriptions-added significant Kaidan lines in the Ardat-Yakshi Monastary part
Normandy Transcriptions-found a new Kaidan line in the Ardat-Yakshi Monastary part
>>and all that Ardat-Yakshi discovery happened because I got distracted in a certain part (you guys will eventually know when you see the guide), and then wow, Kaidan spewing lines from an accident :o (well, whaddaya know).
>>I also found another interesting thing in the Ex-Cerberus Scientists mission, so stay tuned.

@Nrieh I was actually kidding with the "awkward" support thing (that was why it was strikethroughed). As I reiterated before (Garrus romance talk), the romanced support that I want does not revolve around cliche'd romanticism or sappiness or even additional sexytimes (wuh really?). What I want were those hints of care like what Garrus has. Garrus has grown as well throughout the series and Shep is busy with the Reaper threat, but his "care" never stops.

Example:
Garrus: "Blah blah blah, family, Palaven, Victus, ruthless calculus of war, Reapers, stripper Vega..."
Shepard: "Wait a sec, what was that about Ve--"
Garrus: "Sigh...so how about you Shepard are you okay? I'm beginning to see some wear and tear." (maybe pat in the back, if face-touching and hand holding is too "romantic" for you guys)
Shepard: "Thanks Garrus. I'm fine, but..."
(after Tuchanka)
Garrus: "Blah blah blah Genophage cure, krogan babies, Mordin death, krogan singing songs about you, wanna hear what Wrex composed..."
Shepard: "Wait a sec, what was that about Wre--"
Garrus: "But how are you doing Shep, all these things must be getting to you? Can't imagine the burden..." (face-touch, happens in game but can be omitted if it's too "romantic" for Kaidan)
Shepard: "It's hard, but we have to do whatever it takes..."
(after Tuchanka)
Garrus: "Blah blah I'll rally troops from Palaven, but you should get some shut-eye."
Shepard: "I'll sleep when I'm dead."
Garrus: "I know you're strong, but even you need rest..." (or something like that)

See? Not "romance" (kiss kiss, smoulder-puppy eyes, "i love you forever", "the power of love trounces Reapers") cliche'd at all, just additional support for a romanced Shep (not flirting either). Really subtle and doesn't take away the unromanced platonic dialogue--it enhances them. Check youtube vids for actual lines. It also is not lost to me that the number of cutscenes may kill Kaidan's character, but it was done well with Garrus (so let's say we'll operate this scenario in an ideal world). These also builds Shep's character.

But yeah, budget constraints, character priorities, possible character asassination  blah blah...but a girl could dream.

1)  I actually really love all the straight romances for femShep.  I haven't done any s/s romances, because they personally weird me out and seem a little forced for my Shep, but I've seen some and they're sweet just the same.  Just can't speak from experience is all.  I love the Garrus romance because of the best friend quotient, how delightfully awkward he is in ME2 and during their reunion for ME3, only to fall into this very natural state for the remainder of ME3, and DAT VOICE.  Plus his sense of humor always makes me laugh way more than I do with Kaidan (though that sessy man has his moments too... "You uh... left, without waking me..." and the teasing back and forth after Geth Consensus, among others).  I love Thane's romance because of how damn sweet it is, along with the sort of redeeming quality it has both for Shep and for Thane, albeit mostly for Thane ("You awoke me, Shepard" or however it's worded...), their sessy reunion moment in the patient lounge at Huerta (those sounds they both make - HOLY CRAP), how dang old-fashioned honorable Thane is with her, how he speaks to and about her... and omg, if I didn't cry at seeing the posthumous letter sent to her in ME3 after he'd already written it in ME2 (it appeared in his dossier at the Shadow Broker's base after you romance him), how tragic and amazing the entire thing is.  Kaidan's romance is my #1 canon though, seeing as how he's closest to the kind of guy I would go for IRL.  (Though with a bit more of Garrus in him for casual times.)  If only I could have all of them and not get in trouble... (kidding!)

2)  COMPLETELY agree with you on Kaidan's behavior on Horizon, and that's exactly how I defend him when people complain about it.  If someone you loved disappeared, believed to be dead, and then showed up all of a sudden, clearly having been alive for at least enough time to have called or sent an email... wouldn't you be pissed off?  Imagine how shafted and worthless you'd feel to have someone you thought was The One appear to have wanted to be away from you so badly, they faked their own death so you'd never come calling again.  Seriously.  It's heartbreaking to even think about.  On top of that, The One went and started dating your worst enemy!  Get outta here.

Edit: OOH, ToP again!
