I thought he was a cool character with boring dialogue.

However in Kaidan's case, while he of course was impacted by his familiy, the biggest influence in his life was how his biotics made him different from other people. The other two people with biotics, Liara and Wrex, live in societies where biotics are normal in the former case and valued in the latter. In Kaidan's case humans were new to this and still fear biotics to this day, making him different and isolating him from others.
Because of this he was perfect to introduce you to humanity's view on biotics, similar to how Tali's dialogue is all about introducing the Flotilla.

Hi, I'll be downloading Leviathan shortly *squee* and I'm wondering (for those who have played it) who would be the best squad members to take for optimum Kaidan dialogue?
EDI has almost no dialogue (which means that Kaidan gets a lot), but if you don't like her tagging along, it looks like James is best for the first mission, then Garrus for the second and third.
Javik, Liara, and Tali haven't been checked yet, unfortunately.
Ok, thank-you!

Final Results of the Leviathan Screenshot Banter (Romanced Kaidan): Garrus vs. Kaidan
***updated the first mission results. Added some repairing the drone banter I initially missed.
***1st mission
Garrus=26
Kaidan=22
2nd mission
Garrus=8
Kaidan=9
3rd mission
Garrus=9 (+1 if took both renegade interrupts with Ann)
Kaidan=13* (+1 if took both renegade interrupts with Ann)
*if not for the 6 romance-specific lines, Kaidan would only have 7 lines compared to Garrus' 9.
***TOTAL
Garrus=43 (+1 if took both renegade interrupts with Ann)
Kaidan=44 (+1 if took both renegade interrupts with Ann)
Tsk tsk, such a slim lead~ So, we'll see how much Garrus' banter fares with the others then. Will experiment with James next as per request.
Final Results of the Leviathan Screenshot Banter (Romanced Kaidan): James vs. Kaidan
1st mission
James=26
Kaidan=22
Notes: Kaidan seems to get the more important banters and cutscenes with James than with Garrus. However, James and Garrus trumps Kaidan's banter because they hog banter during the repairing the door controls with the drone thing.
2nd mission
James=12
Kaidan=7
...yikes.
3rd mission
James=10 (+1 if took both renegade interrupts with Ann)
Kaidan=12* (+1 if took both renegade interrupts with Ann)
*if not for the 6 romance-specific lines, Kaidan would only have 6 lines compared to James' 10.
TOTAL
James=48 (+1 if took both renegade interrupts with Ann)
Kaidan=41 (+1 if took both renegade interrupts with Ann)
Yikes, seems it's better to bring Garrus than James in the last 2 missions after all...
Final Results of the Leviathan Screenshot Banter (Romanced Kaidan): EDI vs. Kaidan
1st mission
EDI=21
Kaidan=29
Wow, better to bring EDI here with Kaidan than Garrus and James~
2nd mission
EDI=7
Kaidan=12
Wow, better to bring EDI here with Kaidan than Garrus and James again~
3rd mission
EDI=5 (+1 if took both renegade interrupts with Ann)
Kaidan=17* (+1 if took both renegade interrupts with Ann)
*if not for the 6 romance-specific lines, Kaidan would have 11 lines compared to EDI's 5.
TOTAL
EDI=33 (+1 if took both renegade interrupts with Ann)
Kaidan=58 (+1 if took both renegade interrupts with Ann)
EDI has the least banter in all three missions compared to James and Garrus by a landslide~
Experiment results so far. Javik is up next
In comparison with Garrus, James, and EDI, EDI is the best person to bring in the 1st and 2nd mission, if you're all about banter count. If you want Kaidan hacking in the first mission though, bring James (Garrus too, but he hogs more important banter than James, not necessarily hogging banter count). HOWEVER, bringing James results in an invicible Kaidan in one cutscene (telling Shepard to "come on" in the reception cutscene) so pick your poison~

Oh yes! That would be great, even if it's unfinished. And please point out that invisibility glitch, cause i think every Kaidanite will love that part, and it would be a pity to miss it on the first PT!

Indeed, I just started using him on my 3rd ME playthrough and so far he's great. I felt bad when I snapped at him on Mars, felt bad when I turned down his romantic requests, and actually enjoy having him around despite his massive power cooldowns.
[...]
He just wasn't bland anymore, in the first one he has like no personality apart from this strange borderline whineyness, now he is fleshed out with emotions and doesn't feel like he relies on Shepard.
Look at Ashley for example, arguably she hasn't matured from the events of ME1, whereas Kaidan has. Ashley just acts like an overgrown child for most of the game, Kaidan looks like he can handle himself and make his own decisions without relying on Shepard. I haven't completed it yet but I actually enjoy talking to him.
EpicBoot2daFace wrote...
I didn't think he talked about anything of interest in ME1. It was always about biotics and this girl he knew way back when. He never talked about his family other than mentioning his father once or twice, then it was back to the corporations and Jump Zero and that **** turian who hurt that girl he liked.
I thought he was a cool character with boring dialogue.
I love to hear about what "Kaidan-proof" people think about him throughout the series. I like to think that i still have the ability to be unbiaised about him.
I think that what EpicBoot2daFace (nice pseudonym btw) says pretty sums it all up "a cool character with boring dialogue".
Kaidan even says so himself in ME3, "I'm not the kind of guy who's the life of the party, who has a lot of friends. (...)
I mean, some people even find my, uh, integrity annoying."
From ME1, we know that because of his background and headaches and so on, he's not the social type, that's part of his character.
So there you go, Kaidan can seem totally boring, but he's a reliable companion and a powerful squadmate, what more can you ask?

Already put it all in a blog (signature)~ Will point out a lot of Kaidan-y discrepancies other than the sudden invisibility cloak in my Maximizing Banter Guide...soon-ish
Also, I'm gonna transcribe every single Kaidan banter for the Levi DLC...because it would be a pity to have the screenshots go to waste (also, for double-checking and fulfilling my OCD purposes nyahaha...ahem). May the Maker preserve me :innocent:

Actually, discussing this with lindtchoco, i really would be curious to know what husband would think of Kaidan, who he would save, who he would romance. Unfortunaly, the language barrier and the lack of time he has to play such a game wouldn't make his choices as meaningful as mine, so it's true there are good chances he would just virmire him for the sake of being meh. He would play as mShep, that's for sure. I think he could go for Liara or even just nobody > he could be the type to just rush to missions because he doesn't have really the time to spend so many hours on a game. Maybe he would like Ashley, but the Tennyson thing or the "i don't like aliens" thing would maybe put him off. Anyway, if he ended up nuking Kaidan, i wouldn't mind, i would be too glad to have a legit reason to defend how awesome
On the other hand, if he came to genuinely like him, i would congratulate him on his awesome tastes in men, and would explain how Kaidan makes me think of him a lot.
Oh i told him there are 3, but that only the first one was worth it.
I'm totally saying this to the rest of the Galaxy from now on, i will save as many gamer souls as possible. Those ME1 credits are absolutely the best "end of Shepard" experience possible, let just people leave him/her with their hearts happy and proud.
EDIT> which made me think of this comment from a guy in another thread
I'm supposed to be straight and I find that guy attractive.

Guys question~ In the first Leviathan mission, is Kaidan standing with Shep in the cutscene where Shep questions the miners? Specifically, is Kaidan with Shep while the 3 investigate options are available in your playthroughs with any squadmate other than Javik?
Oh you mean the guys who are in the "booth"? Where you have to push the button?
This scene was different with EDI and Tali. I'll check it out...

Well Tali is presently examining stuff lying on the floor, while Shep's asking the questions. Kaidan is standing next to Shepard all the time. Tali did all the datapad explaining there.

I have a feeling it's a glitch that only happens if you skip the dialogues too fast, as if the model didn't have the time to be loaded, and then you're doomed. Like for instance on the last scene on the shuttle, i had a glitch with invisible Shepard too. What I mean is that i think it doesn't necessarily happen all the time even if you take the same squadmate. I should check with Tali again at the beginning of mission 1.
