And ohhhhh romancing discussion, me likey~
I love both the F!Shep and M!Shep aspects of the Kaidan romance, and it was truly an honor to experience the M!Shep version (good job curiosity). I love how you get different versions and ultimately a different experience from romancing Kaidan (two for the price of one)--subtle evidences of tension from M!Shep and blatant longing from F!Shep. This speaks highly of the depth Kaidan's character for me because he accepts Shepard no matter what...equipment they have (yeah, it can be boiled down to technical gameplay mechanics, but my reaction to Kaidan's depth doesn't change). The happiest decision of romancing a game character for me was how after experiencing the F!Shep romance, I get to experience the M!Shep one. This way, not only was I able to pick up on the differences (easter egg time for me), but there was also the context I needed to see the then possible attraction between M!Shep and Kaidan. But as much as I love the M!Shep romance, the F!Shep one still holds a special place in my heart by virtue of nostalgia because it's the first ME romance I get to experience (so I guess 100% love for F!Shep while 99% love for M!Shep for me).
Before I get on my love for the F!Shep side of things and although I have no qualms for a modded M!Shep romance, I still highly prefer the unmodded one because ultimately the modded one is an exact replica of the F!Shep romance--something I have already known. The modded one for me diminishes the alternate experience of the other gender's romance that's unique to Kaidan. And...the ma 'ams, princess, and sudden F!Shep in the romance scene in ME1 never fails to break the modded M!Shep immersion for me, although they're undeniably funny. As for other people doing the modded M!Shep, I'm really happy for them because they get to experience the F!Shep romance (with some immersion mishaps) without resorting to making a F!Shep.
So people have stated for their love of the M!Shep romance, and since they're exactly the same reasons why I love it, I won't elaborate on it further. I will however elaborate on F!Shep...
What I love about the F!Shep romance is how the tension is actually shown. You deliberately see and experience the full-blown way of how they fumble with their feelings. Yes, one could argue that the tension between M!Shep and Kaidan is much greater because they've kept their feelings hidden, but these feelings are inferred rather than seen; you have to heavily rely on headcanon to live through with the M!Shep romance, and people's headcanon are way different from another's headcanon. In F!Shep's case, the tension is more canon and more consistent; consistent in a way that people's idea of how F!Shep's romance developed is singular because that's what is shown in-game. You really have actual evidence of a romance spanning three games, even a chance to "cheat" for additional dramaz.
Another thing I love for the F!Shep romance is how adorably awkward, yet appropriately supportive, quirky and witty they get to each other while flirting. The quirky lines they exchange gives a whole new depth for Kaidan's (and even Shep's) thoughtfulness and wit. Yeah, I have soft spot for dry-humor (I'm looking at you Alistair). You see the conflict that is the galaxy is weighing heavily on them, fraternization to think about (possible cause of Ash's death?), and managing their feelings that's later uncontrollable. You see that at the end of the world, their relationship is specially important--that it might never happen again, thus its culmination the night before Ilos, and its gravity in Shepard's death and in their fateful reunion in Horizon.
Also, there's this thing I noticed about the M!Shep romance in ME1: you don't get a whole set of Normandy dialogue with Kaidan, which lessens Kaidan's character development, so maybe that's another reason most M!Shep players consider him "boring". F!Sheps however, since they're meant to romance Kaidan, get more of that character development, most especially when romancing him. That's my gripe too about the ME2 romances in general: if you don't plan to romance a character, you get less character development from them (e.g. Jack just shoos F!Shep away while M!Shep gets to understand more why Jack is so abrasive towards people).
About the evacuation scene, I actually love that it was added for both M!Shep and F!Shep. I won't elaborate on M!Shep again because I love it the same way you guys do. But for F!Shep, I personally don't see it as diminishing the effect of the London goodbye mainly because I play my F!Sheps a certain way. All my F!Sheps, even my canon paragon, try to distance themselves from intimacy, though they have their own reasons. So regardless of their morality, during the sexytimes scene I never pick the "I love you" dialogue option from Shep (I pick the "Thank you" one, resulting to: "Your support makes me strong). They all hesitate to do so because of duty calls, and perhaps their misconceptions of love and specifically the concept of loving Kaidan in itself. Also, I love Kaidan's response to that more: "I want to be your strength, your soft place to land" --oh how true it is for Shep, someone who singularly takes on all the weight of the galaxy even at the expense of their humanity. Then during the London goodbye, I sense their awkwarness and hesitancy of proclaiming their love--casually talking about other things in a flippant way and Kaidan's initiative of pulling Shep for a kiss. Shep doesn't openly state that she loves him more than anyone else, but only promises to be back for him.
So during the evacuation scene (no matter the logic or lack of it involved), Shep finally and freely admits her love in the face and actual reality of almost losing Kaidan again (maybe actually losing Kaidan just the same in the wake of her Catalyst decision)...and it's heartbreaking, yet beautiful all the same, M!Shep or F!Shep.
Disclaimer: The London goodbye is the same for M!Shep and F!Shep. The big difference is how, in the sexytimes scene, F!Shep is given the chance to say "I love you" to Kaidan while M!Shep doesn't.
Also, I have an entire modded M!Shep romance, but didn't push through with it in ME3.
Also, just my opinion...no need to go spreading it around~
