I finished my playthrough and just felt the need to share my happiness at the survival of Kaidan even if my Shepard is no longer with him.

On a positive note, he talks a lot more than Liara in this particular cutscene. He's the one who inspects the actual body of Garneau and picks up the datapad, while Liara just stands there and comments about the miners having lost time. With other squadmates, Kaidan comments on lost time (is supposed to stand with Shep but is invisible) while everyone else inspects the body and picks up the datapad. People who pick up the body gets 3 lines while people who comment on lost time get 2 lines.

Major disclaimer: Liara gets all the major parts in terms of the other cutscenes (at least for the first mission) though, so pick your poison hehe.

So he's just invisible when his lines come up (when he's supposed to be the guy standing there)?

Now I don't know who to take. Does Liara steal more important lines away from him than Garrus or James?

It sounds like Garrus might be better (since he doesn't mess up the second scene), but I thought he stole more important dialogue from Kaidan too (vs. James, at least).

LOL I misunderstood sorry. I thought you were talking about Liara. What I meant as "he" above was Kaidan.
As for Javik, Javik takes the datapad and inspects Garneau, while Kaidan just stands there with Shepard without lines (which should happen to the others except for Liara, if not for that invisibility glitch). Kaidan only gets to talk when Shep turns away from the miners to leave, commenting about the miners' lost time. Compared to Tali and Liara, James and Javik don't get the important cutscenes (with James though, James gets a lot of banter than Kaidan and gets two invisibility glitches from the comfort Shep scene). 

Personally, it's best to bring Garrus (cutscene-wise) or EDI (banter-wise; she hacks though) for the first mission. Forgot that Javik gets another invisibility glitch in the comfort scene. James gets two invisibility glitches. Tali gets two also. If you don't mind EDI hacking, it's best to bring her. Liara hacks as well.

Garrus, it is, then! I can work with that. :-)

Even with all the extra banter, I don't really like taking EDI anywhere. I think I let her do the Cerberus lab mission (or maybe it was Liara and James? I can't remember) and Cronos, and that's it. She gets enough content in the Bryson lab now that I'm comfortable with not taking her anywhere (it's Javik who I really need to get more time with, but he turned out not to be a good fit for this DLC).

I hope Liara doesn't hog too much on the second mission. I'd rather take her to the dig site than Javik—it seems like something you'd reasonably want to bring her along for, and I doubt Javik would have much interest in running around some desert ruins to rescue some primitive. ;-)

Did it twice with BroShep + Kaidan (one romanced Kaidan) + James. Didn't see invisible (lol) Kaidan. Kaidan was showing up in every cutscene.
