Though I'm a mShep fan, I agree, though I think my Sheaprd's relationship with Kaidan is also just as complex (if not more so) as the femShep version. Tumblr
The realism of the relationship is what really sells it for me. I don't see the ME1 romance as boring, it's how real people form relationships: meet, get to know each other, realize there's some chemistry going on, and then things proceed from there.
And then Horizon, yeah, it's kind of a gut-punch at first; it's supposed to be. But it also shows a lot of self-respect that he's willing to walk away from Shepard at that point in spite of his feelings. And it makes the eventual reunion that much sweeter, and it strengthens the relationship to see that they can get past that.
Umm, I was looking for the part where you're disagreeing with me, but I can't find it. I agree with everything you said.
If you're questioning my statement on mShep+Kaidan vs femShep+Kaidan, then let me expand on it a bit: I think a un-modded mShep+Kaidan has a very complex and sweet relationship from ME to ME3. In ME1 there was no way (without mods) to romance Kaidan as a male Shepard, but the desire was there. In ME2, meeting with Kaidan hurt my Shepard just as much as it would a femShep player. Perhpas even more since male Shepard's don't get the apology email letter from Kaidan. Then, finally in ME3, as the whole galaxy falls into chaos Kaidan & mShepard acknowledge their feelings and start their relationship.
If not more complex, it is more bittersweet than a femShep relationship. It's also one of the things I really love about Kaidan's romance arc, it's different with a male Shepard than with a female Shepard. None of what I said should take anything from a femShep+Kaidan romance.
