Major Kaidan Alenko in ME3: We're going to need a bigger boot.

Seems like people have done a 180 in the past couple of years. Never really saw the foundation of the hate; sure, he's not an eccentric character like some of the other personalities, but does he really need to be? Every good team needs to have a straight-man somewhere in there, and at least he's not held down by cheesy dialogue (hint, Jacob, hint).
Plus, Carth was kind of an underrated character in KoToR. Cool that they brought in the same voice actor for him.

When I first read about the ME series, all the old discussions about the game seemed to lambast Kaidan as being this bland, boring character who fails to deliver anything at all in the game and was completely not worth the effort to put in.

Being a late (make that VERY late) bloomer to the world of Mass Effect, I've been catching up on understanding the series' characters and how they interact with each other as well as the galaxy around them. That being said, the impression I got from Kaidan is that he is a man of quiet strength. I'm going to guess here and say that some players expect the main characters in the world of Mass Effect to have personalities as grand as the galaxy they're trying to save. Personally I'm glad the devs made Kaidan the way he is. Yeah, it's a cliche' but between the Reapers, Collectors, Geth, husks, and every other baddie in the cosmos Shepard is expected to defeat, I see Kaidan as his oasis. Let's just hope that ME3 gives us the opportunity to give Shepard the happy ending he deserves with Kaidan - Lord knows he's earned it!

I'm not sure there is an Alliance Marine Corps, at least not as a distinct entity in the Alliance military. There might only be the Navy, and marines are just a specialized subset of sailors (which is technically the case in the US now, but not really, and as a side note don't tell that to a Marine). But there's no way to tell, really, so your head canon works just fine.Made Nightwing wrote...
Well, I've always imagined that Ash, Kaidan and Shepard belonged to the Alliance Marine Corps...so that's probably my head canon speaking.

while they discard Shepard's warnings before and after the danger has passed, there are a lot of people who cry for Shepard to help them and demand that he's there to save everyone, to the point that some terrorist organisation even revives him after he died. And he'll deliver because that it was he does, but I want Kaidan to be there so he doesn't go crazy. I want Kaidan to be the one he can focus on and I had written some quick dialog before that emphasiszes that. Kaidan may think Shepard makes him feel human, but Kaidan is the one (human) Shepard fights for, the one person he can concentrate on as an individual as opposed to fighting for humanity or the people of the known galaxy.
At least that's what my Shepard does ...

Mordin pretty much says this in ME2. It's difficult to care about the galaxy. It's too big, it loses meaning. But you can focus on one person, someone who matter more to you than anyone else, it's easier to fight, to push yourself.Criz-Zone wrote...

When they first announced that they were going to have s/s romances in ME3, I immediately thought of Kaidan. Not as an insult or anything, like "oh, I knew it, Kaidan always set off my gaydar." But I always thought that Kaidan and BroShep were a good romantic fit. I can see other returning squadmates as s/s LIs, but Kaidan's the one I always thought made sense.
I just hope they don't make it an issue, a la Anders. I'm a straight male, and I typically play straight BroSheps. As vociferously supportive as I am of equality in-game and out, it's not something I see myself ever doing. I'd be more than a little bothered if I had to ****** Kaidan off in my games because I don't want to sleep with him. He's a good friend to my Shepards, one of the few people I trust and respect without question.

well, I felt like pointing it out particularly, because the amount of my mShep/Kaidan drawings; people might think that's what I'm after. I do enjoy these drawings by others if the art is good, I admit, but for the romance in ME3, I'd be fine with a cuddle, kiss & fadeout *shrug*
While I doubt Kaidan and/or Shepard lost their sex-drive somewhere along the way I don't want the 'romance' cutscene to turn into some kind of gay porn
but I do want that romance option for my mShep dammit <_<

She doesn't have that voice with Thane or Garrus either in ME2. It must just be how they told her to talk...
I'm planning to do a playthrough where Shep is unfaithful to Kaidan with Garrus. Just because they were always together on my team in ME1, so I imagine them being good friends and I want to see the complications with that.
I have an excel sheet planned out with all the descriptions of the Sheps I want to create and use for ME3.

Yeah, because that is the way it should be, people shouldn't be made to feel the need to declare their sexual preferences, it should just be that you find someone attractive or you don't, I don't get the whole desire to *out* homosexuals.Criz-Zone wrote...

I don't have to explain to people as a woman that I fancy men..... it rattles my cage that people have to poke around until they find out if they think someone is gay... I assume ~ gay or straight ~ if someone feels the need to tell me who they fancy (not what sex) then they will. If they don't then they don't want me to know....
I don't need to know who is male and who is female on the thread, why would it be my business? I hope they do it right, and by that I mean.. Make it about Shepard and Kaidan, not gay Shepard/straight Shepard... just Shepard.. (just imo, I know we are all different)

I stop in & I see the 'H' word. Night does not do the 'H' word (but has written about it {under protest really - they made me}, including an Argument), even moreso now that the Spectre status has been announced!!! Now more than ever - this is what I feel (& thanks to Red I can show you):

(I love you Red!!!)
Awww I love you too Night. Been away from interwebs for a few days and trying to catch up.
And yes the "H" word is a very bad word... I wonder if I'm the only person how has a knee jerk at the "H"
My friend: "Do you see the building on the horizon?"
Me: "No! Kaidan, don't go!"
My friend: "What?"
Me: "Nothing..."
Also... I have a hard time not spelling horizon with a capital "h".
And about similarities between Kaidan and Jacob - never got this feeling. There always were Ashley - Jacob (rather open, soldier-types instead of caster-types, active in relationships, cautious towards to mercs/aliens) and Kaidan - Miranda (rather reserved, caster-types in combat, cautious in relationships, surprisingly good opinion on aliens), but maybe it's just me.
Edit: excel sheet? I had a table in Word file:innocent:

They only force it on you with Anders in DA2, and while it was a little annoying, it didn't really bother me there since it made sense for his character. Although I did acctidentally end up in a love triangle on my last FemShep run, but I'm pretty sure that was my fault.Jenova65 wrote...

To be on topic, one of my playthroughs planned has Ash as the VS and Shep not romancing anyone...so I think that will be my least favorite one. We'll see if I can even get through it with no Kaidan.

Yeah, I remember the first time I played DA2, I played a BroHawke, and Anders started hitting on me. I turned him down and he got all pissy. My response was, "dammit, Anders." Sadly that was not the last time I said that.Jenova65 wrote...

OT, I don't see Kaidan doing that, since it doesn't fit in his character at all to be that binary about things.
I do hope they take the DA2 route, and show an icon in the convo wheel, if only for romance options. "HEY this is what you're doing."

ME has that as well though. Liara loves Shepard no matter what, and Tali has a crush on ManShep no matter what.
The Anders thing never bothered me because it fit his character (in DA2) and if you turned him down, 10 Rival points isn't that hard to offset. Some people seem to have a stick up their posterior about that whole convo: they don't want to flirt with Anders, but they don't want the rival points.
Anyway, if you ever shut Kaidan or Ashley down in ME1, then their interest just seemed to stop completely. I never understood that. Even if someone rejects another person, the feelings/interest is still there, it doesn't magically disappear. Although I think that Kaidan/Ashley would get over it after a little while, and not have that little spark of interest from the beginning of the game blow up into full on fanatical obsession where they find Shepard's dead body and give it to a terrorist organization because they just can't let Shepard go and then keep pieces of Shepard's armor as mantle pieces in their apartment and Shepard's dogtags on display on their desk.
...What? :innocent:

I completely agree. The romance options should not consist of (and I hate to be it this way) *Click* *Click* *Click* *Bang.* I mean I still <3 Kaidan anyway, but there needs to be more. Honestly what I would like to see is a nice happy ending. That's what Kaidan and Shepard both Deserve. Maybe they go somewhere nice and he gets down on one knee.
