I use Xpadder + a USB controller. It works, but like I said, it's glitchy as all hell. You have to be gentle with the analog sticks or else Shepard will do an automatic 180 and start humping a nearby wall.
To be honest, I wasn't all that excited about Kaidan at first. I always do the romance subplots in games because it's the easiest way to connect with the characters, but I've never particularly enjoyed any of them because I had pretty low standards back then. But when I followed Kaidan's path for the first time, I was floored. They didn't keep reiterating how much they love each other, and there was none of that "two halves of a whole" and/or "a male human/oid and a female human/oid know each other, so they must be in love" crap that I was so used to. They felt more like two individuals who just happened to be lucky enough to find each other. That's why I like Horizon so much (even though I know I'm in the minority) - they can disagree with each other, and still be in love.
To use specifics, I really liked how you could clearly see their emotions and motivations through their dialogue. The way Kaidan tells his backstory clearly shows the stages of grief and the strength he had to muster to overcome all of it. He very obviously doesn't want to share it, but he truly thinks that it will be helpful to Shepard, so he does it for her. I even got some characterization vibes from Shepard, who's supposed to be a blank slate, in the form of how she dealt with the pressure she was under as a leader.
And whoooa, I kinda went off on a fangirl tangent there.
Moral of the story? I'm never, ever going back to JRPGs.
