You're right, Criz, and I'm sorry about bringing it into the thread.  I just felt the need to vent about it, and kind of went off topic.

I play as a male Shepard and I rescue him every time. I always thought that they've known each other for a long time and have been good friends. (Kaidan's dialogue doesn't support this theory, though. Maybe because there would be no other way to find out about him.) For me, Shepard is "..." , Kaidan the is the calm and mature one.
Although I'm jealous that Kaidan is better-looking than my Shepard still, we're good friends in my ME universe.

as for Casey's comment, I think it has often been quoted incorrectly and/or out of context which doesn't help.
This may not even be related to whether or not there are people out there writing pro or anti Kaidan stuff etc. or whether Casey likes the character, this may come purely from the feedback numbers they got from players; e.g. how many romanced him and how many virmired him.
The thing is, in the final version of ME1 you could only romance Kaidan as a femShep and while they're a very vocal group (resulting in a femShep trailer, femShep featured on the ME3 CE case, etcetc.), the numbers suggest that they're only around 17% - 20% of the players depending on which numbers you take.
Which means, from the beginning only ~20% of the games would even have the Kaidan-romance available, now take away those who don't romance anyone or Liara and that's a pretty meager number.
Tied to the whole romance is probably also his chances of being chosen as the VS, because if you've romanced Ashley you probably save her, not Kaidan.

And let's face it, he DOES die often in combat ...
there are others you can add to your squad as 'lockpickers', so you don't need Kaidan, whereas people won't kill Anders because they need a healing mage no matter how much they dislike him.

oh well, here's hope that they still bother to put some effort into it and make him a useful squadmember

In fact, if anything he has saved my Shepard's sorry ass a few times (we've discussed this at length on KAST) There you are, nearly dead and some big bad is coming your way (could be a Krogan, even a Geth Colossus) and BANG off they go because Kaidan stepped in 
Oh, and I kill Anders......  Simple choice, I kill him or I lose Sebastian.... And I like Sebastian

He died very rare to the end of ME1, and at my 2nd playthrough I already knew how to deal with sentinels who suddenly go tanking. And his help was strongly appreciated when I went to Therum early.
Not to forget Saren floating helplessly.

I play as a sentinel mostly, so I think maybe you deal with them differently when you have first hand experience of being one, perhaps  In fact, sentinel Sherpard, Kaidan and Liara are the fastest way to bring Saren down at the end imo....
Funny thing is, I love Carver so I play healing mage more in DA II, when my favourite class is ordinarily rogue, so I hear you on that ^

Getting myself a new xbox today, my old has been there for 3+ years never any problems but I am treating myself for getting a 2:1 in my degree!!! Now I can have more time for ME guilt-free!

Do you think Kaidan will be featured in the femshep trailer? Even though Ashley hasnt been heavily in the current ones it would be AWESOME to see him..

well, Kaidan and Liara are the ones I usually have to revive often, despite going for Barrier early on
during combat I usually don't even use my squad, which is why I personally don't pick them depending on their use (maybe early on, when I can use some backup, but LV60 biotics don't really need anyone any more ), but just because I want certain someones around

and my mShep saves Kaidan as well, unless I deliberately make one of those curiousity test playthroughs to see how the Ashley romance turns out.

Maybe I'm not that good with playing as Sentinel, because my Vanguard (Alyson) with Warp, Carnage and HMWSG X made it faster than Sentinel (Mona) with Warp, Overload, Sabotage and HMWA X. So Vanguard Shepard/Kaidan/Wrex for me.
For Kaidan in femShep trailer. I very hope so, but I think BioWare shows only characters with minor redesign and hides others to not to spoil first appearance. And I definitely can see showing new Ashley's look as another attempt to troll own fanbase=]

He didn't die so much in my game, specially at the end, when he had everything he should have to stay strong and alive. And I really like sentinels (even if I always play as a vanguard).

in my game, i usually play adept or Sentinel and i would usually be the first to die, Kaidan would always be the last. Lols, he survives longer than Wrex or ashley

You're right, Criz, and I'm sorry about bringing it into the thread.  I just felt the need to vent about it, and kind of went off topic.  

Don't worry about it, I know how it feels.  It's frustrating to be cruising around deviantArt, fanfiction.net, or livejournal, and get slapped in the face with "YOUR FAVORITE LI SUCKS," even if it's just their opinion, and it shouldn't affect me.  The only time I've ever opened my big mouth about it was when it was brought to the support thread (and I tried to defend him to someone on my friends list once, but I think we just decided to agree to disagree, lol), but yeah, even then, everyone is entitled to like different things.  Just don't tell me the thing I like, that you don't like, sucks, and we can get along.

If the ME3 writers are doing their jobs well, Kaidan will not only be enjoyed by those who already liked him, but will also find new fans (and/or regain fans who were pissed about Horizon).  Hopefully.  There will always be haters who just don't like any LIs other than their own favorites, or those who don't like Human Male Party Members, or those who hate the voice actor...meh.  Nothing you can do to help them.

EDIT:  ^^^ Criz, that is soooooooo freaking adorable.  I love your art.

I have always seen Kaidan & Shepard as brothers in arms more-so than Shepard and Garrus. What better way to add some drama than by a fierce argument between the two now that Kaidan is both a Spectre and outranks Shepard. It would cool to see Kaidan try and stop Shepard from taking a certain action and you are given the choice to get offended and you can duke it out.

Or you could be Paragon and essentially tell Kaidan to go away and dare to try and stop him, Kaidan obviously doesn't and we see a rift in their friendship. Anybody else want this?

btw: I didn't aim the comment at anyone in particular, I would just hate to see this thread heading into an anti anti-Kaidan direction when it's more fun to be just pro-Kaidan

I can see how frustrating it is when others don't like what you like and more so rub it in your face <_<
and coming to the support group just to stir things up ... oh well, if they really need attention so badly


as for hopes for ME3 ... as much as I want it to end with a happily ever after for mShep/Kaidan, I want the road to that full with conflict ... or have the LI be your calm spot within this whole storm ... (or both for different playthroughs)
the thing I disliked about Horizon wasn't even so much the whole conflict and the "why don't you believe me, you know Reapers are real" versus "why did you betray the Alliance and work for Cerberus?", but that I was missing the dialog options to REALLY let Shepard say what I wanted to say. I liked that conflict and I hope that despite the Reaper threat hanging over the galaxy more than ever it won't just be:
K : "oh you were right"
Shep: "yupp"
K: "let's be BFFs"
and continue for a bit. Some comments about the whole outranking thing would be fun as well, though if Alliance command would give the ship to Shepard, Kaidan would accept those orders, right?

ah, yeah, a disagreement with Shepard challenging the VS, though I can only really see this happen with Kaidan, not Ashley, and I'm not sure why ...

To following orders: Kaidan is always the most reasonable squadmate for me, and I can't see why Shepard might get the idea to rebel. In fact, it might be better to my main Shep who prefers to "Chaaaarge!" at problems to follow orders of the most level-headed person she know.

My Cerberus apologist is another story, but it's a) only one playthrough it's my rare playthrough where Ashley is alive - in fact, I downloaded this save to Kaidan don't be forced to work with this heartless terrorist Shepard in future or hear how his former CO ended up

...If he dies a lot for you, then either you're not using him right or I've gotten extremely lucky.

His biotics often save my soldier's ass, especially on insanity; his biotics were also crutial to getting my poor, squishy adept past the first few levels on insanity; yeah, you may not need his medicine skill, but it can make a difference (particularly for neural shock); electronics and decrypting and biotics means I can bring Ashley along (who I love) for double the soldier damage, etc.

He's incredibly useful and works well with every team.  You just have to know how to use him.
