My question is: Why are they even wearing armor? The ship is exploding the last thing I'm going to do is take that elevator down to the cargo bay and put on combat armor that doesn't at all quick to put on. I'm just going to assume they were already in their armor or something, getting ready to go planet side.

I think he could have been using it to get his medium armor certification because it's the most basic of the medium armors. After all, the phoenix he wears in ME2 is medium, as is the armor he wears on Horizon.

I am sure the phoenix armor is just another example of kaidan/ash being interchangeable in mass effect 2. I really hope Mass Effect 3 will be different.

Ooooh!  Thanks for the heads-up!  I do the exact same thing.  Somebody should start a "Manipulations" thread just for discussing it.

One minor difference is that Kaidan's armour looks amazing AND practical, while Ashley's armour is the exact reason to be .
I'd rofl if Miranda will wear heavy armour in ME3 and has her hair done in bun.

I think what we saw so far of Ashley wasn't actually her armor ... we'll have to wait and see

As I recall, it was said "different armour will be available for Ashley" (or something like that), with immediate response from several nasty forumites that this was heavy one and light version is pink bikini painted on skin
However, I'm far more dedicated to support armour from "screenshot" to be actual Kaidan's armour (and pic above may give some dirty minds about how his not-combat outfit will look like) than concerned about Ashley's changed preferences

Kaidan's underwear, yes.  Vega's underwear, no.
