@Jenova - Damn, that was a nice trip down memory lane, lol
@Batteries - yeah, I think most of us did, lol. Unfortunately there is still a lot of hate for Kaidan and Ash though. But I think a lot of people who generally lurk have come out of the woodwork in support of them with ME3 coming closer and the fact that the VS plays an important role.
Major Kaidan Alenko in ME3: We're going to need a bigger boot.

That's assuming they're true, of course. One of my English professors always said to use statistics in an essay if you're trying to persuade, even if you just make them up, you'll sound smarter. I didn't buy that...

70%, really? I can see some people choosing to do that, but that many? Wow. Does that take into account how many people actually played the first game, though? The Genesis comic shouldn't be used for those statistics.

Anyway, as I've seen most of the people who changed their preferred LI did the "clean" ME1 playthrough for this romance option - situation "I've romanced Ashley/Liara because I didn't know Tali would be possible, then found out and returned to replay ME1 / edited save" seems to be the most popular. Situation with "cheating" Shepard still exist, mainly among those who has single playthrough of both games, but exceptions were noticed as well. But 70%? Okay, BSN might just not represent the actual distribution...

THE HORROR!?!?!?
I'm quoting here from the July 2011 PC Gamer mag that had an article on ME3. Bear in mind that this was written before the release date got pushed back to March 2012 (article gave a release date of 'Holiday 2011') so some statements may no longer be 100% accurate and should be taken with a huge grain of salt...or maybe thousands of little ones, preferable around a margarita glass:
"Your romance options get interesting as well: there will be no new love interests in ME3, so who you can sleep with depends on your existing relationships. If you coupled up in ME and your squeeze is still alive, they're guaranteed to be a member of your crew. If you weren't faithful to them in ME2 - and 70 percent of players weren't - that's going to come to a head at the worst possible time: the end of the world."
I kinda wonder where they got that 70% figure - gamer poll perhaps?
So it's really good I stayed faithful?

To be honest, the overall 70% unfaithful figure really doesn't surprise me, sadly.
I've always wondered if players kinda felt forced into persuing a romance in ME2 just to get the achievement. To be honest, my unmodded Sheploo had no interest in persuing a romance. Yes, I'll admit that in ME he did not persue a romance with Ash or Liara and rescued Kaidan on Virmire (and stayed unattached in ME2) on the outside chance Kaidan was available for MSheps in ME3. But even if he wasn't...I just don't know...I just felt indifferent to the female LI's.
I'm sure a psychoanalyst would have an explanation for this.

It definitely plays a role. Had the achievement been also obtainable by staying loyal to your previous LI from ME1, I'm sure the proportions would be different. Or if there was 'single Shep' achievement, like there was Bachelor achievement in Fallout New VegasMageTarot wrote...

that was our resident awesome modder and possibly cyborg in real life - Collider
as far as cheating for achievemnt, it could also be the combination of James bond effect (new lover in every story) with Horizon effect (you ***** how dare you call me a traitor)

I just didn't think the ME2 romances available for femShep were as good as the Kaidan romance. Kaidan's romance seemed to start with respect and friendship, it felt like a slower build up to those in ME2 which I found too cheesy for my tastes. (says the person whose fics are the ultimate in cheese, lmao). My Sheploo stayed single in ME1 (mainly because I didn't particularly like Liara or Ash) but ended up with MIri in ME2, not for any particular reason though, apart from the fact that I like her, lol.
I didn't find ME2's romances so much cheesy as not fleshed out. With Kaidan, he starts off with an awkward, cute crush, and builds upon that. ME2 didn't have that sort of feeling. You had Garrus, who treated you as a leader and a friend and never once brought up romance. It was only when Shep pushed it that he, hesitantly, went into a romance. Thane's seems to be the best of the three IMO, or at least the most romantic, but still not built upon the same. I haven't romanced Jacob, so I can't comment for him.
