KOTOR 2 is dirt cheap these days, I'm sure you will find a great deal especially now in Holiday season :) And any laptop taht ain't like 5 years old shoud run it I think. My 3 years old former laptop that didn't even have a graphic card (had some integrated crap) could run it

Oh, great! I'll have to shop around and find one. I know my laptop isn't the greatest (Compaq Presario CQ60) but hopefully it would be adequate. Here's what my baby looks like. :P

I'm really mixed on KOTOR 2. The stories and characters are generally good (there are exceptions, of course). But you can argue that the design and gameplay flaws aren't worth it.

And there are no real romances in it, for those curious - in fact I think the "romance" content in the game harms it more than anything else.

Not sure what gameplay/design flaws are there, it's basically K1 gemaply wise. The only flaw that was there was the cut content from ending, but with TSLCRM it's now fixed mostly. And I don't think the romances really harm it, they can hardly be even classified as romances so.

But I'm a KOTOR 2 fanboy so :P

personaly, still not buying it.  I never really managed to finish the first KOTOR as it is, and the fact that second kinda spits all over the ending for the first one?  meh.

Well, BioWare spit all over KOTOR 2 in TOR so they're even. And Kotor 2 is so good (and better than K1) that I really recommend overlooking some of the railroading and picking it up anyway. If you're a sucker for stellar writing, you won't be disappointed in a bit.

two wrongs don't make a right, Isaac.

honestly, if it at least had an engaging gameplay, I might give it a whirl after all, but... to each their own.  I'm perfectly content with reading wiki entires, when it comes to KOTOR 2 and playing other games in mean time.

but then again, I don't have Bethesda aversion some of you have :P

Looks like it's too early to delete my saves with female Shepard turned in male to romance Kaidan back in ME 1 B)   Although in ME 2 this imported "modified" Shepard is recognized by the game as male who did romance Kaidan so maybe it's no so bad. But it sure is very disappointing if Kaidan's emotionality and love are at their best and maximum only for females <_<

I think, as Isaac partially alludes, that this is really a problem when it comes to how Bioware deals with romance and friendship.  Players who don't romance a character shouldn't be locked out of developing a meaningful relationship with that character.  It annoyed me with Jack particularly in ME2.  She would literally stonewall a female Shepard beyond a certain point; apparently, only romantic love allowed for full character development.  Anyway, my point is this: whether or not Kaidan is available as a same-sex romance in ME3, players shouldn't have to resort to modding in order to unlock an emotionally satisfying experience.  For heaven's sake, there's more than one kind of love in the universe.  To write without realising that really restricts one's storytelling palette.

Oh yes, absolutely! For two games it's either get to know someone well enough but you're forced to romance them or keep it strictly professional. I did one playthrough with male Shepard just to see how much of Kaidan is available without console commands and it was painfully little. Kept trying to become at least good buddies and still not sure completely if succeeded since da good buddy didn't come up to cheer Shepard up when the Normandy got grounded. Kaidan obviously wouldn't attempt to kiss Shepard but damn, Shep was all alone at that moment.
Even if it's no longer so in ME 3, still too much experience is lost just because of this s/s rectriction on the first  two games. :(

@IsaacShep I thought that all this "for female" thing is little to fishy. He is mentioning this all the time! Maybe it's on purpose? Becouse they can't say anything about S/S and they are trying to mislead us? Something like that ;]

^conspiracy theory in there

That's exactly what I was thinking.  Either that or just to appease the many FemShep players who have been waiting since Horizon for a proper Kaidan reunion as others have mentioned.

I'm just going to take the "pretty rip your heart out" to mean it'll be very emotional whether you get the happy ever after or everyone died ending.  I really don't want to spend the next five months worrying about it, so I'll assume both are possible.  In my opinion, it wouldn't be Mass Effect without both possibilities.  As much as I want Erin (my canon) and Kaidan to have a happy ending I have no idea how it'll go.  My favorite characters are always the ones who develop their own personalities.  My Lady Cousland was created for the sole purpose of becoming queen, but her personality did not allow her to make the choices to have that ending.  Erin herself was created to not romance anyone in ME1 but wait for Garrus in ME2 but she developed her own personality that led her to Kaidan. She can't imagine herself with anyone else now.

I'm currently on my third planet in KotOR and now I'm kind of worried about Revan and Carth's ending.  It's actually motivating me to hurry and finish it so I can try out 2.

Ghastly unfinished ending aside, I loved KotOR 2. As Isaac says, the writing was amazing. It even has a cameo for Carth, so both games have some Raphael Sbarge goodness!

By the way, I played Mass Effect before going near any of those Star Wars games, so for me Carth always had Kaidan's voice, if anything. ;-) But, really, it wasn't a distraction at all, apart from during the first few minutes after meeting Carth. They have sufficiently different personalities and backgrounds that I didn't really carry over my feelings from one to the other. Apart from the commonality of noting what a gorgeous voice they both had. :-D

You can't play after the final episode, not without mods anyway. That's not cool about New Vegas :?

Has there been any word on whether or not a new player will be able to choose the gender of the VS at the beginning of ME3? Or will the VS default to opposite gender in non-imported games?

New Vegas is bugged as hell, even more so then fallout 3. plus half the developers for Obsidian used to work for Bethesda.

<-been playing Bethesda games longer then Bioware ones /ducks.. never got far in Baldur's gate when I first picked it up.

the only developer I'm starting to actively dislike nowadays, is Blizzard >_>

@ Estelendis :P I'm with you on Carth having Kaidan's voice :P Mass Effect was my first Bioware game, after years of playing other stuff. still - he doesn't voice themthe same way, yeah you recognize the actor, but Kaidan speaks slower, more measured, his voice is pitched lower.

No confirmation so far, but they did say they're working on 'something like Genesis comic' and most people expect the trial hearings to serve as a choices generator.

*fistbump* Totaly KotOR2 fangirl here. :D

The gameplay is basically the same for both games (them using the same engine and all), and I thought KotOR2 was actually improved in some areas, gameplay wise (especially with Feats and skill points, as well as modifying armor/weapons).

As for romances, Isaac's right, they can't really be classified as romances. I remember reading that Obsidian didn't want to do romantic subplots because they didn't think they could execute them properly, or something. If Bioware would have done the romances for KotOR2 and let Obsidian do everything else, it would have been the greatest game ever (to me)!

This post is worded as if you are asking if you can choose Kaidan to be a woman. Just saying.

There are mixed accounts as to whether you can choose past decisions in ME3.

Mac Walters tweeted that most of the trial will take place before the start of ME3. Silvermansaid that there will be no Geneis like comic.

so we don't know how or if the prior game choices will be handled for new players/Shepards. its all speculation at this point

I know you guys are going to hate me, many of you probably already do. But I won't be surprised that Kaidan will not be the s/s. They have introduce a new male character (Vega) who as of yet has had no mention of a past relationship with a woman. (Not saying someone can't also be bi, please don't take it that way) He also seems to ready have a case of hero worship for Shepard, ei. ripping TV off the wall and beating a batarian to death with it. Thane had a wife, Garrus was with the recon scout, it was hinted that Jacob had a thing with Miri, and Kaidan had Rahna. It would be easier to simply add a new character that can be gay or bi, then to semi recon a existing character and to the 'bi the way' treatment we got in DA2.

I'm just hoping the trial is a nice and lengthy segment with plenty of dialogue and not some 2-3 minute affair before all the shooting starts :(

Err, well, the VS is generally understood to be Kaidan/Ashley... I think it's pretty clear I wasn't asking whether or not you could choose to make Ashley a man and Kaidan a woman.

For a while, I've asked myself if Obsidian is cursed. (Um, not literally, just metaphorically.) So many of their games had excellent writing but an unsatisfying finale, as if they ran out of time or money towards the end. KotOR II. NWN2. Mask of the Betrayer. The only game of theirs I've played for which this wasn't the case was Alpha Protocol, which I loved... but it got a lukewarm critical reception and didn't sell that well. I really wish they could get a break. Sometimes they feel to me like the game developer equivalent of Kaidan... Their quality isn't recognised by the majority of gamers, but what fans they do have are very passionate and will defend their merits to the ends of the earth!

The most important bit is that Casey himself said they're doing something like the comic. I put his word regarding game content over David's in this case.
