49 years old here - but consider this, my contemporaries: Sbarge is 47. And anyway, age is all between your ears (i.e., a matter of how you think and act more than calendars). It's no boundary unless someone who doesn't know any better makes it one.
I actually came at KOTOR and ME from MMOs. I've played MMORPGs since original Everquest, and not that many single player titles. But when TOR was first being discussed as actually coming soon (my forum ID there dates back to October 2008), I realized that I had no feel for Bioware games. To rectify that, I got KOTOR - and never looked back! I fell *hard* for Carth Onasi, and I refuse to give up my headcanon story ending for any Johnny-come-lately Revan novel.
What started out as gamer education became addiction - and I'm having a hard time with pacing it out. Despite promising myself otherwise, I cracked open ME2 for my first playthrough last night (though spent most of the time reading about DLC and deciding which I might get, then learning the changed controls). I know some of what's coming, and dread it, but can't help myself..I have two femSheps to import, and two more in various stages of ME1. Plenty to keep me busy until March (or so I keep telling myself).
If I haven't said it before, let me just say how glad I am to have found this group of witty people with excellent taste in biotic men

I got Mass Effect late as well. I didnt think I would like it, it's my first and only sci-fi game ive ever played. I played Dragon Age first and absolutely loved it. So, I got on youtube to look at videos for ME and saw Kaidan and that was it, I basically got the game for Kaidan.

& on the topic of how we came upon Mass effect...
For me I noticed my brother playing Kotor 2 on the x-box, so I wanted to know what was so good about it, which turned into me begging him to let me play after I saw him finish the game as a female exile. The he lent me Kotor 1 for the PC but I was sore Carth never kissed Revan except with the mod. Then he lent me Dragon age origins which I have too many hours on the game to admit but I romanced Alistair 4 times, Zevran 1 & needless to say I loved the game.
Then I saw some videos about ME. The first one I saw had Kaidan in it & he sounded exactly like carth so I went to make sure I wasnt dreaming and after that I checked and it had Bastila & Carth's VA's in it so I ran to the store loved it, (By the time I started liking ME it was around June of 2010 so pretty late), then had to get ME2 & the rest is history! Now when I see a bioware game I just say...
Shut up and take my money!

So for me it was just a chain reaction, once I had one RPG I needed more.
I also have a sister who is 10 years younger then me, so I have been trying to teacher well! She has watched me play Bioware games and even has a DA:O & ME1 character that haven't gotten very far but still.
Though she loves to planet scan after I made her try it, so I always let her do the scanning for me, which doesn't bother me. :innocent:

Okay for how I came upon ME and the wonderful Kaidan...
I was watching a friend play ME to avoid going home for a bit (a story in itself, that I am skipping) and decided I liked the story and wanted to see more. I thought he was kidding when he said that Ashley was his girlfriend, so I was taken by surprise when Liara and Kaidan had come in to confront me (I'm a complete paragon and nice to everyone}. I chose Kaidan, of course... as if....
And that's the story.
Okay there may have been a bit more to it.... like how it made me obsessed with writing... but you don't care about that....

And don't you find it suspicious how he stopped adding 'female' to Shepard at every occasion possible?

Indeed. I think it must be more complex a thing than we originally thought, or it's just taking a bit of time to organize. We can be patient.
Whoever asked the question about romantic poetry reading: I think you're an evil genius.
I love reading everyones tale of how they came to BioWare, and Mass Effect in particular. <3

You're right, I didn't even notice at the time, but he didn't specify female.

Patience isn't a virtue of mine
...it is incredibly awesome about the romantic poetry reading however!!
Hmmm...well since people are sharing, I guess I could tell my story about how I came to Bioware and then Mass Effect. Well, I first played DAO about a year or so ago, and then got wind of DA2 and became incredibly hyped for it! So I started viewing the forums and such here looking for new info, I eventually joined. And as such as time went on became more aware of the different Bioware games. When I first came here I knew 99% nothing about Mass Effect, but my friends were all saying how great it was so I decided to try it for myself. I bought the first game...and I swear the first time I saw Kaidan and heard his voice...*falls over in chair*
EDIT: Top.
