I'm pretty sure it's just for the naming purpouses so that Anderson is known as a Captain, Kaidan as Major, Shepard aa (Lieutenant) Commander, Ash as Lieutenant (Commander) etc. To avoid repeating the same title for many characters.

the changes in names depends on what branch of the army they are from, ground forces (army) and fleet (navy)
have different names and ranks, it all depends on where they serve

Thanks for the link, that is really helpful. To differentiate between titles/ranks before, I've just compared them to ranks on website of the actual U.S. Marines, but it was confusing. Should have known to check the wiki.

I did the same thing, comparing it to the different branches of US miltary....and got more confused. Hard to compare reality to fantasy space military.

About Captain vs Major: I really wasn't surprised that Kaidan was made a Major and not a Captain. It seemed to make sense. Again basing what I know about US military, a Marine could serve on a ship but not be Navy. Kaidan is a Alliance Marine, he even says he and Shepard are Marines. However LT Commander is actually a US Navy rank not a Marine rank at all.

Marine serve on land, air, water, and I guess in this case space. They are the first defense against a enemy. Hints the nickname bullet sponges. Anderson might be consisted Alliance Navy. Maybe had Shepard never been made a Spectre, she would have commanded ground forces of the Normandy while Anderson commanded the ship. Shepard would answer to Anderson to while on the ship but it would be her judgment while planet side. Though she would ultimately answer to Anderson of her actions. Marine and Navy have similar rankings but have a few differences. The Alliance ranking system is based of that. This all of course is me guessing and applying what I know. The ranking system of the Alliance is only vaguely touched on. Compared to the US military its missing ranks like Lieutenant Colonel, Colonel, Brigadier General, Major General, Lieutenant General, and General.

Alliance is some kind of hybrid of the two of them.

Edit: Just watched that one I linked. It sucks. So many on youtube are skipping the cutscenes and dialogue to show "gameplay". *Facepalm* I'm sure Isaac found a good one.

Thank you for info! Alliance and US rank systems is wildly different to one I'm familiar with, so any light in this area (as well as guessing) is highly appreciated.

Yea the comic with Vega ends with Anderson puting him in charge of gaurding the brig with Shep in it.

It's a bug But I'm very happy it happened since we learned Kaidan's new rank even though it was technically Ash-alive demo

The demo is clearly buggy as hell. But I squeed like a fangirl when I heard Major Alenko, for once I'm glad to see a bug in a game. And to think we were all pissed off that they moved the release date from Nov to March. Now I'm really glad.

 I enjoyed the demo in all it's buggy glory. Especially the people stuck in windows or that would stop mid-walk and then just hang out in suspended animation before disappearing. Along with Anderson's ability to talk without moving his mouth, and he and Shepard being able to roll their eyes back into their heads. 

Although I will say that if I hadn't seen Ashley's new look, I wouldn't have known it was her. She just... doesn't look like that kick*** soldier from ME1. Maybe that's just me though. *shrugs*

Major Alenko can pick me up anytime.

About Ashley: being a little distracted by staring at details of Alliance uniform, I first thought that person standing there is Miranda.

And I don't feel guilty! That Alliance blues are just something - I was especially impressed by guy from committee who wore beret. SO looking forward to see Kaidan's casual outfit:wub:

btw: there's another video floating around where Shepard meets Kirrahe, and he adresses him as Major Kirrahe if I heard correctly, and it's said that Kirrahe got promoted from because of the actions on Virmire

no clue how you can get promoted from Captain to Major if they're two different branches ...
