I hadn't seen that before!  Good stuff.  :-D  Actually, if I my ME2 laptop wasn't still in the blasted repair shop, I'd love to mod that scene so that the photo shows Shepard.  Fuel for some alternative universe fanfic where they end up in different roles...

You'll need that one playthrough.  A Shepard petty enough to let someone die because of a rank-related ego issue wouldn't have been awesome enough to save the galaxy anyway!

Tsk, tsk...well that seems a little petty. Isn't it enough that Shepard is saving the whole damn galaxy? I think rank becomes a bit unimportant after that

Just so.  When you're that awesome, every other awesome person on your team makes things better, not worse, for you.  

Incidentally, on a less whimsical note, I think that sentiment carries through to the fandom as a whole.  If we really have good reasons for liking our favourite characters, then we don't need to put down anyone else's favourites to make ours seem better.  Not a fan of Ron the Death Eater fanfic...

All I know is that there's a reference to a Major Alenko in dialogue in one of the leaked beta videos (not the datamined story spoilers).

I agree completely. I love every squad mate but I obviously enjoy some more than others. I see no reason to rip on others just because they aren't my favorites

Sorry, but the one I saw has been taken down since then.  Lots of people had their videos taken down due to copyright infringement claims by EA.  If you search, you might find it, or one like it, reposted.

Anyway, I seem to recall there being some discussion that it could be a reference to Kaidan's father, but there was some other reference indicating that it's just a buggy reference that should have been made to Ashley rather than Kaidan (since, in the leaked beta, she was alive and he was dead).  I apologize for not being able to offer anything more useful.

LOL, I linked this trope back when ME2 first came out, several times, when talking about certain fanfics that detailed how mean and awful Kaidan was after Horizon, compared to the new LI of choice.

I also think it applies, at least a bit, when talking about what the ME2 writers were trying to accomplish with Horizon...

No, you're right: his dad is retired.  I don't know much about the military, though, so I just assumed that people retained their rank after retiring (as opposed to, say, being discharged).

I agree, Teen.  While I don't approve of all fix fic by a long shot, I think it's always worth examining a story event that has inspired a lot of that in the fandom and asking why that is.  Horizon certainly has inspired its fair share.  Part of the problem, as we all know, is the way that both Ashley and Kaidan are written almost identically.  Another part is the way Shepard is written.  Really, the writers could have done so much better, and, in this case, I think a lot of the fix fic is justified.

About Horizon...(teehee)

I didn't exactly hate what happened. I mean, to me at least, it made sense that Kaidan, as loyal to the Alliance and striaght arrowed as he is, would react in the manner that he did. It was Shepard's derpness that had me throwing an almighty **** fit.

I dunno, maybe it's easier now for me to say that Horizon wasn't so bad since I know that Kaidan will be playing such a large role in the upcoming game. I can say for sure that I probably read that afterthought message from him a few too many times than is considered healthy...

I think Die For Our Ship applies quite nicely as well in those types of fanfics. 

My issue with Horizon is mostly that it seemed like BioWare was trying to make us hate our VS LI and ditch them for one of the shiny new LIs, and that we weren't allowed to have any type of closure before ME3 with them. (that email doesn't count). Contrast to Liara, who doesn't wig out on Shepard, smooches him/her, is going after the Shadow Broker because of Shepard, and then gets her own shiny DLC where even if you "cheated", you can hook back up with her (or be all buddy buddy if you're friends).

<_< If they didn't need to drag perfect little Liara through the mud to get players to choose a new ME2 LI, why'd they have to do it to the VS? What did the VS ever do to you BioWare?!
