Top(ish) of the page Kaidan!  (Though now ZombieGeisha has added one too.  But hey, more Kaidan is good!)

Image IPB

By the way, in terms of ME3 hopes, I would really like Kaidan's biotics and tech abilities to get more of a role in his cutscenes, unlike the Horizon one where he uses an assault rifle like Ashley instead of creating a biotic barrier.

From a metagaming point of view, I understand Horizon - it's plot armor, so the VS survives to ME3. Ill-fitting plot armor, but that's what it is. As Shepard, however, it's hard to go through.

JeffZero wrote...

I'd think that with Raphael Sbarge himself talking about how much he's enjoyed Kaidan's role in ME3, people would be a bit more cheerful.

I waffle back and forth about this - on the one hand, he's been pretty open about how much he liked the wrting and that there is some steam between Kaidan and femShep. On the other hand, he also used the phrase "rip your heart out." When I think about the former statements, I'm optimisitc; when I think about the latter, I worry. Remember, actors like things that challenge them - and that would include a dramatic death scene, heated argements, tear-jerkers, etc. If we hear he's headed back to the sound studio, we'll know they've changed something, too...

Argh, the uncertainty! It's killing me (but not enough that I want to read spoilers and ruin the experience come March)! SW:TOR will distract me, but except for the beta weekend over Thanksgiving not until next month.

Cruel, cruel Bioware ;).

I'll agree with Jaer on this one. I have to say I'm very pessimistic about ME3. I have been unsure if I really wanted to get it for various reasons. The spoilers haven't made me more optomistic about Kaidan's role or character integrity.

@ZombieGeisha: I think I liked Miranda from the outset because I do admittedly have a weak spot for femme fatales with with we Americans often foolishly deem 'exotic' accents, but I know what you mean. At first she seems rather basic, rather predictably 'devious', but as you get to know her better you realize she's more than the silly outfit and one-liners. There's a BioWare character there for sure.

As for Kaidan, yes, he absolutely snuck up on me. I like everyone, but it took me a smidge longer to really get into Kaidan's character than it did with some of the others. But there's no going back. :D

@Lyriel: As someone with a touch of acting experience myself, I can't deny that. If I were returning to a role and found out that my character was slated for a gruesome death, I... can't deny that there'd be a bit of excitement involved in my prepping for such a role. So I do see your point, yeah.

I have some doubts too but I'm gonna trust Raphael and remain optimistic. Not to mention, as much as I like Kaidan, there's so much more in this franchise I love and I want to see how it all ends and I love playing this franchise so I'm gonna buy it no matter what.

I would not expect someone who is currently working on a project -- and might have future projects to think about -- to say anything negative about their employers.  BUT, I'm also not saying Raphael Sbarge is necessarily "spinning" anything.  Actors often prefer angst and drama to sunshine and rainbows, so what I might see as "vilification" might be exciting and challenging for him.  That's fine, I understand and respect that, as an artist.

As a player, and consumer of the game, however, I feel like I chose "wrong" if I don't want to experience angst and heartache at every turn while playing ME3.  Maybe some folks are cool with that, and some will LOVE what they are doing to the VS.  I personally just can't get past the fact that, if I had chosen a different LI (aka the "right" LI), I wouldn't have to suffer the angst and drama.  In fact, I'd be reassured constantly that those characters are awesome and wonderful and Shepard is smart for liking them.

So, yeah, I'm pretty bitter right now.  I think the only thing that would change my view is hearing from people I trust who have played the final product, that I'm not going to throw my monitor out the window if I get to a certain point in ME3.

/shrug. I know characters. I know plots and the paths they take based on the ground work laid.
The Kaidan of ME1 would never do what the Kaidan of ME3 will do. He would never allow the situation to escalate to that point. The Kaidan who went through BAAT and killed Vyrnnus would never do what the Kaidan of ME3 will do.

And I take Sbarge's comments with a grain of salt. The man does an incredible amount of work. There is no way he will remember a character he voiced in 2007 and briefly returned to a couple of years ago.

You know...whatever. Be happy with ME3 because it has a character named Kaidan Alenko in it. Just don't expect him to be the same character from ME1 because he isn't.

I agree with Isaac -- there are so many different characters, different plot arcs, different angles that I'm invested in that there's bound to be plenty I'll enjoy and I can't wait for the game even with what I've heard of Jacob's handling.

When Sbarge talks about "rip your heart out", I mean, the most logical example is the cheating fallout.

Imagine, for a moment, that you're Kaidan. You watched the beautiful, tough as nails commander from afar, and were drawn to her. Then you fell in love with her, and she with you! Together, you stopped Saren and Sovereign. You don't tell Shep, but you daydream a little about the future, and then Shepard *dies*. Your beautiful, one of a kind woman, *dies*.

Two years later, she's alive, but she's working for terrorists. You're sick to your stomach, and your lungs feel incapable of taking in air. But yet, she's alive, and your heart aches just a little, from the possibility of happiness. You see Shepard again, and two years of mixed, messed up feelings come bubbling up to the surface. You don't handle it your best, but neither does she. But perhaps, just maybe you can reconcile after this mission she's on. Because she's Shepard, and she's beautifully complicated.

When she, miraculously, survives the suicide mission, by this time, you've had time to open your heart again to hope. Then, you find out that she cheated on you. Your two years and several months of agony, and she's with someone else. You realize that perhaps, you never meant to her what she meant to you. You feel sick all over again, and find yourself wishing that she hadn't come back from the dead after all...

Or there's other explanations, in which Kaidan can get killed off. But, I don't know, I just don't feel like we're going to get funneled down that path.

I feel saddened about the spoilers too, particularly given that I did my best to avoid them but was spoiled anyway. That said, we as a fandom have held strong for years. I think we can manage a few more months. Even these few more months.

PM, please? :) I'm quite curious now.

Anyway. Hi all, I'm Theresa. I've been reading this thread for the past few days and really have been enjoying your conversations. So I thought I'd delurk lol.

IIRC, Raphael Sbarge mentioned in one of his audio blogs that some of the best writing for Kaidan is in ME3. I want to believe him, but I'm not sure if I can trust Bioware to not completely f up Kaidan's character. I haven't read the plot. Though one part was unfortunately spoiled for me, and I'm pretty sure it's the one that makes people (including myself) scream "OOC" :| So at this point, I'm kind of curious to read the rest of the spoilers now. And I'm bouncing back and forth between being excited and scared for this game. Eh.

Hi Theresa! :)

Well I can't say I'm remotely scared of ME3, but like Isaac I'm really in it for literally every single character and arc and not just certain ones. I know many members of individual characters' fandoms pin them first and foremost, and everything else secondary, so results may vary. To me, even if they screw up Kaidan (which I don't really think they will, but it's obviously possible) I don't think I'll walk away from ME3 disappointed; they'd need to screw up a great deal, and the various spoilery tidbits I've heard don't tend to tell me that.

I hope you ultimately come to see ME3 as a great finale. Warm wishes.

Welcome, Theresa!    I know how you feel, but I don't want to read the spoilers after waiting for so long...  If Kaidan in ME3 is so much better than the few spoilers I've seen, I want to be pleasantly surprised when I play the game.

This is my last word on the matter and I will bow out.

I went into ME2 unspoiled. I knew nothing and was so excited to play the game I took two days off work. I got a subpar story and an unsatisfactory reunion with the character I was most looking forward to. I promised myself that I would not buy ME3 if it suffered the same problems.

I have more than 30 Shepards imported from ME1 who have completed the suicide mission and the DLC for ME2 in preparation for ME3.

I will not be buying ME3.

Sorry to hear that, Jaer. Maybe someday you can get a copy of the game lent to you at least in order to confirm that you made the right choice for yourself.

Different strokes and all that. Wishing you nothing but the best. :)
