Always was curious about this, but never asked. How many of your Sheps are Vanguards? Was Vanguard the first class you played when started with ME franchise?

I'm asking since Vanguard was the class I chose when I first played ME1, without know anything about the game, characters etc. Obviously I liked Kaidan alot since the beginning, but there was also the fact he just happened to be super useful as a Sentinel to my Vanguard.

I wonder how much the fact people run with squaddies that are useful to their class influences who they like more than the others. Ever thought about it? Does it even make sense? xD

I read the VS romance arc analysis, and I enjoyed it. I'm really holding out hope that the Kaidan romance will be resolved accordingly. I understand the drama that goes into a relationship, but damn. I agree that it seems as though the VS was pushed aside in ME2 to make room for the new LI's. I hated Horizon, and as a result, dislike playing ME2 just because I don't like how the VS part was played out. I don't want to go into rant mode concerning Kaidan (or lack thereof), but I think a lot of good points have been made:

@syllogi: I definitely feel cheated as well. While I understand the reasons behind the VS storyline, so to speak, I dislike the fact that the Liara-mancers were given the opportunity to see her, fight with her and even resolve their romance with her while the VS romancers were given nothing.

@sesheta: I think I read somewhere or saw a video about the whole "painting themselves into a corner" thing. They admitted that it was definitely too many squad members, not to mention additional LI's that they now needed to take care of. I also agree that they underestimated the popularity of the VS, Kaidan's especially.

@Jaer: Yes, consistent writing is what it comes down to. If one person had stuck to Kaidan from the beginning, they would have a better understanding of the character.

*sigh* I just want for things to be okay with Kaidan, you know. We've been through enough already.

In regards to ME2 playthrough, I just finished Horizon, and it feels like it's gonna take me FOREVER to finish the game. I still need to recruit the rest of the squad, and start on the loyalty missions.

On another note, this post took me a long time to write, lol, because I'm at work and keep having to minimize.

Meghan and Rachel are both Vanguards.  A Vanguard was my first class I ever played, too.  While I've always liked Kaidan, Garrus was merely just useful till I started trying to put real personalities on my Shepards and had to analyze how he interacted with them.  So... they became my go-to squad even for my Adept, probably because I was most used to how they operated and could micromanage them best.  That and the whole romance-thing with Kaidan.

I loved playing a Vanguard, even before Charge.

I have one vanguard.  It was my second playthough and wasted on Sheploo.  It's been my favorite so far, although, I find Charge often puts me in situations I can't get out of.  I've been trying to replay ME1 to open up more of the acheivements, so I try to roll with a squad that will balance out my character and that I haven't used for every game before.  So Kaidan is out right now, as much as it pains me.  I have a fresh new Adept with Garrus and Tali.  I just love overloading geth!  Don't worry, he's still being romanced even if he can't come on every single mission.

Edit: ZombieGeisha is right, also shotguns.

My tester Shep, Serena, was a soldier in ME1 and changed to vanguard in ME2. My canon Shep, Adrienne, is a soldier through and through. I have about four more Sheps (each with a different class) that I haven't really gotten around to playing as much. Serena and Adrienne are the ones I roleplay and have actually made intricate backgrounds for, lol. I even came up with my own valid excuse for Serena becoming a biotic in ME2, haha.

I like using Kaidan because, once you upgrade his biotic skills, he is a lifesaver, literally. I like how he complements my soldiers. I always alternate the other squad member, though I'm partial to Wrex, and this last playthrough with Adrienne, Kaidan/Garrus were my team.

Does anyone know if we'll be able to change class for ME3 like we could for ME2? I really want to keep Adrienne a soldier through ME3, but I miss biotics, lol. I'll probably change her to vanguard if it's possible for ME3.

EDIT: @leborum: Charge got me in trouble as well. I've come to use it more as a way to get out of situations than to get into them. If I'm overrun by husks, I just charge out of the way, lol.

The problem I had with ME2 wasen't just Horizon it was the way bioware handled VS threw out the game and in the DLC LOTSB was fun but the end line were if you wanted to hear something aobut VS you had to pick the Renigade responce and then you get what to me sounded like more of a catty coment from liara, which is why i never pick that line anymore. so i really think bioware just droped the ball on VS threw out ME2.

Im kepeing my fingers crossed that Bioware wont let us down for ME3 but not holding on to much hope after ME2

It's confirmed you can change class, but I'm not sure about details. You should check the "Confirmed Features" thread, should be more info there about respecing.

As far as Horizon--I wonder if the whole VS/Shep situation was actually written to be more, but ended up getting cut?

They have a tendency to cut alot of good stuff that's been written.

Perhaps there was more to the whole thing, or supposed to be. That could account for the odd flavor Horizon has. Where you're left wondering wth just happened?

There coulda been another scene, too. Where you run into the VS later in the game. But maybe it got cut and replaced w/ an email.

Or not..lol. But the VS scene on Horizon does feel a bit disjointed.

Oh, and I've only played as Soldier. I luv soldier...esp. w/ sum Reave. But I only have 1 Shepard. lol. I've played that Shep a few different ways, but I never redesigned her. So, I can't imagine ME3 w/ a different Shep now.

I can't wait to see how the lighting in ME3 is. In ME2 my FemShep woke up looking like Miranda slathered her in makeup. In ME1 my Shep looked fine. In ME2 I just kept wanting to wash her face. sheesh.Still, I'm glad we get to tweak our imports if we want.

P.S.: has anyone seen the armor from the Amalur/ME3 cross promo?

At first, I wasn't sure, but the more I see that Reckoning....knight armor...I imagine it on FemShep and think, yeeeaahh. I wanna wear that when I first hit the Citadel and talk to the council.

Spikes and all, baby..lol

-snip vanguard/Kaidan question-

I picked Mass Effect up last January because I was obsessed with Dragon Age: Origins and kept hearing about BioWare's other awesome RPG. I tried infiltrator first and I never made it off the CItadel after becoming a SpecTRe. I mostly play fantasy RPGs so though the story seemed okay, the gameplay was kicking my butt and I kept getting lost. I decided I hated it and it got lost in my closet.

In June, almost six months later, I decided to give it another shot and I started over with a vanguard. I loved it and rushed through the entire game (I ignored most of the side quests) in 21 hours because I was having a blast with my vanguard and I was caught up in the main story.

Honestly, when I first saw Kaidan I thought his looks were 'meh' (I laughed at the hair bump :o) and his personality as someone I could get along with but nothing special. I started taking him with me because he and Garrus equaled out the little combat/tech/biotic bars on the selection screen and I romanced him because he was there. I romanced him again in my second pt as an adept solely because he was there and familiar by that point. My third I started with the idea it would be my canon- she'd be a vanguard and would romance Garrus who I decided was adorkable. When I actually started playing her I was surprised to realize I WANTED to romance Kaidan, he had grown on me and now that Shepard, she did become my canon, has remained loyal to him and I can't imagine her with anyone else.

And as an aside, I have since beaten ME1 as an infiltrator (I had a grudge to take care of) and I'm slowly taking him through ME2 because he's my sole Ashley save.

TL;DR- Vanguard is my canon and favorite class and the fact that Kaidan, as a sentinel, worked well with that class led to my increased exposure to him which played a role in him becoming my favorite LI.

I have one Vanguard if you count different Shepards, 4 Vanguards if you count ME1 playthroughs and 10 Vanguards if you count ME2 playthroughs.

Vanguard wasn't my first class because I didn't feel like I'd enjoy getting close and dirty at first playthrough, so it was Infiltrator broShep who romanced Liara and had Ashley and Garrus in party. Relationships with Kaidan didn't work well because he kept dying and had huge cooldowns and hadn't any weapon specialization... well, you know how it happens - tossed out from party at beginning, had little to say to maleShep, so never got back to party.

But then I decided to make Vanguard femShep playthrough and chose two chars I didn't get particulary close at first run and... yeah, I've posted results on previous page - only 3 of 12 ME1 runs didn't have Kaidan as first pick for party, more than half of ME2 playthroughs are [loyal] Shenko. Returning to "usability in gameplay", I have little to say about Kaidan because he simultaneously grown on me as squadmate and personality wise; but it definitely worked this way for Miranda. It's good to be Sentinel, hm? :)

I haven't read it. Actually, I'm just playing kotor for the first time right now (in between knitting scarves, of course). I had to see what all the fuss over Carth was about. Maybe I'll just skip the novel tie-ins, then.

snip pic

You don't lose anything by skipping the novel tie-ins. Without touching spoilers, male Revan is canon and the novels reflect that. As much as I love Kaidan's character, Carth's snarky flirting will always have a very special place in my heart. Odd, since I never felt compelled to write fic for Carth the way I did for Kaidan.

My first ME character was a Vanguard. I had no clue what I was doing and my play style reflected that. I've usually rolled either soldier or infiltrator since then, the exceptions being when I forced myself to play biotics to get the achievements. I prefer the infiltrator because I like shooting things and being a sneaky tech, too.

For fic purposes I had to play through as a biotic so I could get the feel of gameplay fighting using biotics but I think I chose sentinel for my Rache character so I could understand Kaidan's capabilities better. But that was a couple of playthroughs ago and I no longer remember the specifics. My current playthrough, Maeryh, I just imported to ME2 and is an infiltrator. I'd say that out of all of my saves, less than eight are a character that has biotics. My only maleShep is a soldier.

My first ME1 playthrough was as a soldier, but that was pretty boring. I discovered biotics, and adepts, on my 2nd playthrough and refuse to play without biotics now, lol. I played theough all the classes in ME1 but for ME2 tend to stick to adept and sentinel whoch are my favourite classes. I tried vanguard in ME2 but after dying a heap of times gave up and converted her into a sentinel, lol.

Infiltrator through and through. Nothing like sniping through everything and incinerating enemies with my brosef Garrus. I could never start a romance with him. He's my bro, we killed saren and took down a human reaper together, but romancing him was -weird-. Kaidan or no one :|

The three fSheps that I've imported to ME2 are all cross-eyed. Image IPB I guess it's an import thing since they all seemed fine in ME1. Also, when they run on the ship (like, say, up the catwalk to Joker's station), their head turns to the side. So, Shep's running down the catwalk with her head twisted around exorcist-style, lol.

Oooh, I liked the Reckoning armor as well. As long as we could toggle the helmet off, I'm a happy camper. I soooo wanted to use Blood Dragon Armor in ME2 but hated that I couldn't take off the damn helmet. Image IPB

@mineralica: Lol! Yes, those spikes are not good for carrying people. Though, I'm hoping this time Kaidan will carry me Shepard. Image IPB

My first Shepard was a Soldier. Since then I have played as Sentinel, Adept, and Infiltrator, and my fav class is Sentinel because I like being able to do a little of everything, but Adept is really awesome too. Biotics FTW! I keep hearing amazing things about Biotic Charge though, so I really want to try playing as a Vanguard to sate my curiosity. No matter what class you play in ME1 though, Kaidan can be levelled to be hella useful. I've never played ME1 without him as a perma-squaddie.
:D

On the question of ME writers, does anyone know who wrote Kaidan for ME3? Is it Mac Walters?

My first playthrough was as an engineer. I chose it thinking it would be the easiest for me to figure out, not having played this kind of game before. It ended up not mattering which class I chose, though, since I never figured out how the power wheel worked on that playthrough, lol.

Now, most of my Shepards are adepts or vanguards. I feel handicapped without singularity or shockwave. I loved throw and lift in ME1, but in ME2 throw was never the same and sadly no lift. I have a couple sentinels and engineers that I've enjoyed playing, for them I just have to rely on my team a little more to keep the bad guys at a distance.

I pretty much always have a sentinel on my team. In ME1 it was Kaidan that went everywhere with me, I love hearing his input throughtout the game and I love it when he saves Shepard from charging krogan or geth destroyers. In ME2 Miranda filled in helping me get to know and appreciate her character better. I am really looking forward to having Kaidan back in ME3 and hoping for some dialogue between him and Miranda...would be interesting.

(delurks to say) Don't know if anyone mentioned this yet, but on the femshep thread they have confirmed that the new femshep will be playable in the demo. No importing of our characters though. So I decided to tweet and ask Jesse Houston if Kaidan would be in it. (He confirmed femshep). I'll let you know if he responds. Unless someone else already asked and I am out of the loop.(back to lurking).

Same here. I had no idea how the power wheel worked the first time I played. I think my very first Shep was an adept on my husband's xbox and was at a loss as to how to use the biotic powers. I got so frustrated because I knew I had powers, but I just couldn't "find" them, lol. I just gave up and subsequently made a soldier once I got my own xbox. I remember making a "dur" face when I finally realized how the power wheel works. Image IPB Image IPB

Kaidan was with me everywhere in ME1. I guess I missed him so much that Miranda went with me everywhere in ME2, lol. I'm definitely a big fan of Miranda and learned to appreciate her character because she was always with me. I roleplayed that the reason she was on every mission was because she was keeping tabs on Shepard, lol. Incidentally, she and my Sheps have become really good friends.

Edited to say that it might sound a little weird, but I love roleplaying my two main Sheps, lol. As I'm playing, I feel like I am Shepard. I think that's why I'm so emotionally invested in ME and wish for a great (and, hopefully, peaceful) reunion with Kaidan. Image IPB
