But the sense I get consistently is that ultimately it is the conflict and the willingness to engage in conflict that makes the VS so appealing. I think that is what I have gathered from VS fans, both Ashley and Kaidan.

You REALLY need to leave now. It's one thing to try an "compare" Kaidan and Liara, but bashig Ashley shows you're just trolling and don't really care about debating anything.

I didn't bash Ashley anymore than all the people calling Liara 'creepy' and 'obsessive' have bashed Liara. If that is considered bashing then be honest about people bashing Liara equally.

I am sorry if you felt that I was bashing Liara. I do like her character a lot but she is not my fantasy. I do understand your preference but please understand that not everyone likes Liara like you do. My only knock on Liara is really due to the marketing. I am just tired of seeing her and Garrus in everything. Plus I feel that the VS loves their Shep as much as Liara does though it different ways because they are different people. Anyways, why are you hanging out in a thread dedicated to Kaidan when you dislike Kaidan/Ashley. I respect your opinion but please respect mine as well.

I just said I like Kaidan. Well, to be honest I have been trying to understand the VS fanbase for a while and Kaidan fans are generally considered the most dedicated as it were, so I have been trying to understand why. Why do you think Garrus and Liara are marketed more?

Probably a bit late to the discussion, but my theory is that the Bioware writers couldn't believe that anyone wouldn't love Liara as much as they did, so how could a mere human compete with her complete devotion to Shepard in ME and in the 2 year interlude before ME2.

This is apparent when my male and female Shepards who pick up Liara after Virmire, have the mind-probe then go direct to Ilos, with the result that no romance is possible with the person who actually killed her mother. One month later the Normandy is destroyed and Shepard dies. However on Ilium Shepard gives and gets a hug as if they were the best of friends or more! And the fact that Liara couldn't let go of a Shepard who hardly talked to her in ME, and who dislikes and distrusts the asari and their mind-probe, is off-putting to say the least. (Is the 'embracing eternity' responsible for both Liara's and Shiala's desire for Shepard?)

On Horizon the VS is, in the main, right about Cerberus, while Shepard's derpy dialogue choices are obviously so bad so as to encourage players to choose another LI from the shiny new, or newly available, cast of characters. Who would want to stick with a ME romance who stands their ground and won't meekly follow Shepard?

My bias in LIs is towards humans and Kaidan so far is The One for my female Shepards, although I have to confess a sneaking interest in the ME3 newbies. Fortunately I have a few male and female Shepards who are still single for RP-ing purposes. One is definitely for a new romance with Kaidan - she was happily married in ME but widowed when her husband died defending the Destiny Ascension and all because of her decision. She needs a second chance at love even in the midst of a galaxy at war - fingers crossed that I make the right choices for her.

So as a Kaidan, and to a lesser extent Ashley, supporter I think we are fighting a losing battle with the writers who have decided how things are going to progress for two characters that get little love and a lot of ridicule, from devs, smart-a*se journalists and apparently the 'majority' of players. (I dread to think how the writers are going to treat Jacob in ME3.)

I will however accept that my theory may be incorrect if Liara can die in ME3, and Kaidan and Ashley are treated fairly in the game. - not better than but just as fair as Liara, Tali and Garrus.

@mineralica - Thanks for the Deception news! I tried to keep up with that thread, but it was moving way too fast for me. I'm so glad that BioWare listened to the fans' concerns. I might even look into getting this new version of Deception.

Also, finally caught up on encounter. It's great!! Keep it up, can't wait for the next installment.
