The one thing I will say that (partially) excuses it is that there were far, far less women gaming then than there are now.

It's why I love Mass Effect so much - Shepard is the single most enjoyable character I've ever played (followed closely by my Wardens and Hawkes). It's also one of the reasons I appreciate Kaidan and the other LIs that we're offered. He's a strong individual who can be with our Femsheps (and hopefully our Sheploos soon, for those who have been waiting) without sacrificing his own character, wallowing in insecurity, or wasting his time trying to be overly macho just to prove that he "wears the pants." Mass Effect isn't just a great game series, it's a refreshing one for gamers like me.

Woman 30+ here also, not a great gamer though... I play a game once every 3 years I think. Not because I dislike video games in general, but because I'm not interested in games with hyper-virile machos as heros and air-headed bimbos at their side.

So, well, I completely agree with you. The reason why I love mass effect IS femshep. She is so awesome ! She is the very first femaler character I play who embodies all the qualities I'd like to have IRL. and it's refreshing to see such trust and responsabilties on the shoulder of a woman, for once.
And Kaidan is the perfect LI for her. Their alchemy is magic.
They are the very first "perfect couple" (in my feminist but men loving view) I've met in a video game... perhaps there are others, as I said I don't play a lot.

I agree.
It is one of the few games where you can play a strong female character (esp. not with half her body on show :P) which is the main reason I have played this game way too many times lol. The relationship and romance between femshep and Kaidan interweaves naturaly in ME1 and really adds to the story. Kaidan is a great character and even though ME2 didn't do him justice he doesn't deserve all the hate.

In my opinion they are the best video game couple.

@Lady I don't know yet. It's supposed to
be written by R.A Salvatore, so I would think it would have a good
story. I only have the demo to judge by, and it wasn't very long for
such a big game. I did hear Greg Ellis voicing one of the characters
though (he does DA:A Anders and DA Cullen). ♥ I guess I'll play it for a
while and let you guys know. :)

I'm planning on grabbing it today too.  It's a last minute decision, but maybe I can get through it before March 6.
Although, the demo's out in a week, so that may cause some serious distraction.

@FemShep - She's obviously one of the greatest characters in video game history.  What I love most about her, is that she's not treated differently than ManShep.  It's a universe where powerful, intelligent women are not treated as exceptional.  She's exceptional for what she's done, not because she has boobs.

That's what I love about Bioware games. It lets you pick male or female^_^ femshep is pretty much the strongest female lead I've ever seen in anything.

Sorry for repetitive nouns and odd sentence structures in my posts today, after last week's three exams, two tests, a ten photo photoshoot, and 200 pages of a lit book to read, my brain is too fried to make very coherent forum posts.

Ah, I'd heard he threatened potential lockdown. And I didn't think that was fair.

I was shoked when I looked in the threads and found that is femshep worthy thread to be stamped w/ the BW thing. To me that feels like Bw is endorsing that kinda stuff.

Well, it's Tues. Any goodies on the horizon.....oh, no pun intended.

@ kingdoms of amalur I have read that it will be more like the elder scrolls. Also the game is like 200 hours of gameplay. So I am sure you will be very busy if you decide to get it. But it should have a really good story because of Salvatore.

@ femshep I probably woudn't have gotten ME if not for femshep. I am really not into shooters and even though BW writes amazing stories It just would have never caught my attention. Plus I think Jennifer Hale potrays Shep better. I mean I like maleshep and all but Jennifer Hale just nailed it. I started a maleshep playthrough but just haven't been able to finish it and I keep making more femsheps. I agree that she is a very strong female lead and that is really cool to me. Most female characters are potrayed as objects or don't really matter, but femshep isn't.

Any way back on topic
*waves* to all the new people and welcome. Also I hope the femshep trailer comes out this week I mean we only have a week until the demo comes out. But who knows maybe we'll get a double dose of Kaidan next tuesday for Valentine's day. But to see him before hand would be really nice.

I felt the same way. It boogles my mind that its still open. :? It has nothing to do with ME3, it is just a bunch of people hiding behind numbers to say well look at the numbers Femshep isn't worth it so give me and my precious maleshep more goodies! *sigh*

Anyways, nope no announcement yet. Today we are suppose to find out how to get early access to the demo so can't wait to hear how! Seeing Kaidan earlier sounds good to me! ^_^

wow. KoA is like 200 hours of gameplay. Sweet. I really want that today, but I don't think I can. I was planning on paying off my CE preorder. So, there goes my extra fun money. Darn it! I really want that game.

I'm hoping BW is releasing something today....:?

It makes sense for the trailer to be released either before or on the same day as the demo as I think Bioware would want us to see FemShep before the demo. So I got my fingers crossed. This week is going to pretty boring so be nice to see some new footage :)

I actually started playing Mass Effect because I could choose to play as a female Shepard. My brothers recommended ME to me because I was really into Fallout 3 at the time (this was about a month before ME2 came out). I just love that both in games like Fallout and ME, I can not only play as a female, but I can also create my own character. Granted, Bethesda's character creator is not exactly the best (my girls always end up with a shadow on the upper lip making it look like they have a mustache) but just the fact that I can create who I want to be is perfect for me.

I initially didn't find Kaidan attractive (maybe it was the hair bump, lol). When I found out that Bioware was known for adding "romance" to their games, I was like, "Is Kaidan the only option?". Then I started talking to him (my God, that voice Image IPB) and getting to know him and I just fell for him. And the rest is history. Image IPB

I don't consider myself "good" at playing video games, but I love playing them and know a lot about them. Seriously, my brothers and husband come to me just to find out random facts about games, 'cause I research everything.

Like I said, I browse the other threads and forums, but this is my home. Image IPB  I can come in and talk to you guys like I would my own family and friends. So, thank you. Image IPB Looking forward to finally "meeting" some of you guys in mp!

Edit @ KoA: I'll probably get it, but once the price is down a bit. I enjoyed playing the demo. It reminded me of Fable/Dragon Age.

I believe today they were going to release info on how to get early MP access. Some form is supposed to be posted on the mass effect website, but there is nothing yet (since I last checked).
I also need to add more of you guys to my friends list on XBL so if you get a message from teddyjac that is me. Hope it's ok. Not into multiplayers but I think with you guys it will make it really fun:D

Image IPB found on internet. not sure whose it is but if it's your hope it's ok I posted it. Awesome pic.

Okay, the big Suicide Mission chapter is up:  If It Meant Living-44: Suicide / Deviant Art Link.  It begins, and to some extent, ends with Kaidan, so enjoy :).  I am really, really happy with this chapter; in many ways it brings everything that came before full circle, hopefully in a cool way.  It feels like the end, but it isn't - 2 chapters to go!

I'm thinking this is what Kaidan is doing while he waits to hear back from Shepard:

also, PERHAPS i'm getting paranoid, but did someone else notice that when you decide to have a toast to Joker with Dr. Chakwas, the conversation with him about Kaidan after Horizon looks slightly different?

J: He was front line with you against a Reaper, and I'm the one who gets roped back into saving the galaxy? Did someone switch our files?
Shep: You're the force that pulls it all togethr, Joker.

i AM paranoid... right?

Forget arc projector...what about the Cain? Image IPB

Hmm, I don't remember that bit of conversation with Joker. Then again, I felt like every dialogue option about Horizon were a little inadequate. I think it was something like "I've moved on" or "Makes me realize that I've lost more than time" or something like that.  What I really wanted to say was, "Oh my God, Joker! I miss him so much!! I need him here with me! I love him!" Image IPB

I haven't had my drink with Chakwas on this playthrough. Saving it for right before we pick up the Reaper IFF, which will be tonight when I get home from work. Looking forward to hearing about Alenko's biotic display. Image IPB

And it was something about Co-op.

But they pulled it......uh.......I...... I should go.

I've got stuff to do IRL anyway.

Female gamer of 30+ years right here. Started on the Atari 2600 and in the arcades with the likes of Pac-Man and Galaga. Discovered PC gaming on the Commodore64 with the "gold box" D&D games like Curse of the Azure Bonds, Secret of the Silver Blades, etc. I've played all kinds of games - strategy, shooters, RPGs, flight sims, etc. Became somewhat of an MMO fanatic with the release of EverQuest, though the MMO fever has mostly been cured by time (although I'm enjoying the heck out of SWTOR).

I've been irritated for DECADES by the way women have been both marginalized and objectified by the gaming industry. For a long long time they seemingly didn't want us playing their games (although it probably just never occurred to them that we might like to), but they sure as hell wanted busty f***-me dolls for the gaming guys to look at - mainly in fantasy RPGs, to be fair. The one thing I will say that (partially) excuses it is that there were far, far less women gaming then than there are now.

But that's the point today, isn't it? Women are becoming just as avid gamers as guys, and in increasing numbers. Thanks to MMOs and to companies like BioWare and Bethesda, I'm able to play as a female and she doesn't have to look like a porn star or act like an airhead. She can be attractive, yes, but not over the top. And the emphasis can be more on her strength of character, intelligence and abilities than just what you see on the surface.

And wow, this post ended up way longer than I had planned on making it.

TL:DR Version - Female gamers exist - there are millions of us. BioWare is in the vanguard of making games more appealing and enjoyable for female gamers, and they're reaping the rewards. Other companies need to either wake up, or get left behind.

I still remember playing games like the original pitfall when characters were like 6 pixels. I had everything from Sega Genesis to Nintendo 64, but none of my favorite games had female main characters. If they had women in the games, I was just supposed to deal with the ridiculous outfits. And I was fine with that until women started to really join in on the video game fun. Then there was no reason for it anymore.

But what I find hilarious is that a lot of male gamers act like we are taking over. I pointed out 3 games that all have more dialogue, cutscenes, and focus for the male character. Two were made this year. But that's not good enough. They aren't willing to share. They don't want to change. They just want things to remain the same way they were in the 80s and 90s, women for their viewing pleasure while they travel many different universes as their male fantasy figure.

Honestly, if from here on out, Bioware only did female main characters, they would all freak. Look at what happens now when we get these small morsels. Women can't be marines. Women can't be swordsman. Women can't beat giant enemies or punch Saren. Women can't lead armies and teams, no one would take her seriously! Femshep needs to get back in the kitchen. Seriously, as a woman I've dealt with these comments as a gamer my whole life. But they are finally starting to lose the massive grip on the industry. This is probably part of the reason people hate Kaidan cause he's not a macho, take action, disobey his superiors guy. Gaming is no longer a boys' club and they better get used to it.

^_^ Ok, I'm done. Bring on the new info!

I must admit, I saw that femShep thread and didn't bother to read it (I mostly just stick to this thread tbh ...), I figured I could probably pretty much guess the contents...
I love that Bioware give us the option to have male or female lead characters with the same powers, number of romance options etc - and the same functional looking armour!!  I remember when I started playing Everquest and got some armour (banded mail or so I think) that looked like regular armour on a male character but when I put it on my female fighter it suddenly turned into some sort of see-through chainmail leggings - I really hated that.
I originally played ME2 first, with a male Shepard and I enjoyed it but I didn't feel any great urge to play it again or become particularly emotionally invested in it, until I played ME1 with a femShep and Kaidan, and just got really hooked on it (thanks mostly to the amazing skills of Jennifer Hale and Raphael Sbarge, who just made the characters come to life!).

Oh and somebody asked (several pages back - I'm playing catch-up) if there were any browncoats - yes right here!!!
