Lt. Commander Ashley Williams thread: "Don't 'Ash' me!" We're Back Baby!

How does Ash get away with her hair being down in ME3? She's been promoted to LC of course, but every female figure I've seen in the Alliance has had their hair tied back, up, in a bun etc.. The art book in the CE says they wanted to give Ash more sex appeal, but in game, I wonder how she got away with it. Of course, once she's a Spectre it doesn't really matter, but it's been something I've been thinking about.
Even though it's not mentioned in game, my Shep was very happy to see her with her hair down lol. He is so easily distracted when it comes to her.

Pfeh. But honestly? I think it's just eye candy and anything else. i never had my hairs long (if I can pinch them with finger - they long enough and need to be groomed), but back at school played in school theater and wore long hair, "wig", right? After wearing it I'm pretty sure than long hairs are not fitting any activity (sitting on your six is not activitiy). Starting from flailing long, unrestricted hairs give, blocking your visibility and getting into eyes, strange behaviour under helmet (not sure they will absorb any significant amount of energy, and adding problems with perspiration, sweating, body grease, skin flakes, etc.
We know little about quarians' biology, but for very same reasons I lol'ed at "Tali's picture". Back in army we had long exhaustive training where we practically lived in NBC suits for several days and though we had short haircuts, our heads (and bodies) were covered by such thick amount of grime, dirt and grease so it took a long time to wash everything away when we returned back to barracks.
No, I do not propose "G.I. Ash" hairstyle, but bun should be better and more logical.
Plus those face "oxygen masks" don't have proper face sealing. Moreover, lack of helmets disturbs me a bit. Not that I believe they will always protect you from projectile (they don't, unless you wear special very heavy (2-3.5 kg IRL) helmets) impact, but they could protect you from shrapnel, glancing hits and, what most important, blunt traumas, caused by anything, starting from blast waves, excessive moves, slips, whatever.
Oh, almost forgot. Regarding "sex appeal". I think there is thin line between "appeal" and "vulgar". Plus, personally, I think that if you like particular woman for long term relationship, you like her not because of huge cleavage, tight pants over bottocks and other "eye candy" elements. Attractive woman is attractive even with minimal if any make-up and modest clothing. Just my 2 cents.

Just catching up with thread - I have seen a few fics try and do this, trying to keep away from that in my fic as not sure I could write it without it sounding cheesy.

The sad thing is that I've actually known of this happening except it was with chocolate cake instead of pancakes. Fortunately, I wasn't on the receiving end!

Ashley: Good morning, Champ.
Shepard: "Champ"? *amused*
Ashley: Yeah. Since you're no longer CO of the Normandy ...
Shepard: Guess I'll miss "Skipper" then ...
Ashley: I still don't get it: why did you retire?
Shepard: I'm still a Spectre and advisor of the Alliance, Ash. It's not that I'm lazy now.
Ashley: You belong on board of the Normandy, not behind a desk.
Shepard: *sighs* you're right. But duty calls. And since the galaxy is saved, I'm needed elsewhere.
Ashley: Nonsense. Did you check the news recently? Turians and Asari found an Alliance against the Salarians since they didn't help us in the final assault. Krogans are with them as well, but seem to attack Batarian colonies as well. We're facing another galaxy wide war and you're needed there to talk to the people.
Shepard: Admiral Hackett stated clearly we should better keep the Alliance out of any conflicts.
Ashley: Hackett is an idiot ... with all due respect.
Shepard: Ashley ...
Ashley: Okay, Shepard. You told me once we need to stand together - and stand strong. Hackett used the same words before the Battle of Earth. Why's everyone pointing guns at each other? Doesn't make sense to me.
Shepard: I don't understand them either. Ash, if I could, I would change something, but ...
Ashley: ... you don't because Hackett told you?
Shepard: No. I don't take orders from him anymore. I resigned, remember?
Ashley: Then do something. You didn't save the galaxy just to lose it a day later.
Shepard: Any idea where to start, Ash? Tell me!
Ashley: Why not talking to the Council? I know, it is no more, but why not getting them back together? You can do this. You're a symbol of life. They're going to listen to you.
Shepard: Right. I don't know where you get that idea, but you're wrong-
Ashley: You give up?
Shepard: Yes, I do! I saved the galaxy three times, died once, almost got killed a second time. I did more than anyone else. And still I can't have a rest, at least for a few months!
Ashley: John, you deserve a rest. But you can't put down duty now ... I'm with you. With you in this mess.
Shepard: *sighs* ... okay. I'll think about it, hmm?
Ashley: Fine. That's all I wanted to hear, Champ.
Shepard: Please, call me Skipper ...
Ashley: "Skipper" *smiles* welcome back in duty ...

Such wisdom... I think that we all could think of some irl examples on how long relationships based solely on physical attraction last (and how they usually end). But let's just go with: There are Shepards. And Ashleys. And then, there are horny dogs (/wave Ken). And wh*res on high heels (/wave Miranda).Rudy Lis wrote...

Ashley, Jr.: So, my Daddy died a hero?
Ashley: No. Not that day, anyway.
Ashley, Jr.: But... how could he survive?
Ashley: Um... space magic?
Ashley, Jr.: ...
Ashley: Ok. The Gods intervened. Told him that it wasn't his time yet. That he'll have to apper in many, many more dialogues and stories before they let him rest.
Ashley, Jr.: Are you part of those too, Mom?
Ashley: Sure thing, honey. I am the main protagonist, after all. He's just my sidekick. *snickers*
Shepard: You realize I'm sitting right here, right?
Ashley: I didn't give you permission to speak, Skipper.
Shepard: ...
Ashley, Jr.: Wow. You're a real badass, Mom. When I grew up, I want to be exactly like you!
Shepard: ...great.

That's why I like ME1 Ash. Or ME2. In ME3? Not so much. Not at all, I'd say, even romance scene is strange.
Plus, what I certainly don't get - if even in old GTA:San Andreas it was possible to change your appearance and you can, to some extent, ask your loved ones to do so, why they don't implement it in ME? Yes, up to stupid "Ash, why wouldn't you let your hair down/gather them back in the bun?"
I think they surely drop the ball here, just imagine - from the very beginning Ash has her hair in strict military bun or any other compact form - now she is officer, so she would behave, given her family story. Then Mars > Hospital > Coup > Return to Normandy and then (finally!
My sketch on that:
- Ash walks into cabin, "requests confirmation" on status of their relationships and, if confirmed, asks permission to stay for a bit.
- If given, Ash unbuttones top button on her uniform - just one, not all of them down to navel! Point here - be a little bit "out of duty/uniform", to stress more private/caring relationships and to strees she feels free and safe in Shepard's presence.
- Now, during some physical contact with Shepard, such as hug or holding
I'd add surprised Shepard's look, his even somewhat childishly curiocity while touching one of Ash's hair's strand, and Shepard's teasing response (rising brow is optional), something like "you full of surprises, spectre". Then Ash reaches him for a kiss and whispers with same teasing tone "Semper Fi" or something like that, to stress he stayed faithful to her regardless of anything.
I dunno like you, but I'd melt here a bit.
Sorry for style, I typed that in haste, we have "emergency crunch" on work, so I use small pauses to type it all in. And don't shoot piano player, he's doing best he can.

Okay, okay, stop your pancakely obsessed moster!
I sign treaty with my SO that she'll allow me to bake tower of pancakes first, than make photo of it to keep you at least visually satieted!
P.S. Given way previous pancake treaties went, I doubt it'll be something higher than 5 cm/2 inches.

So true.
Think fans of a certain characters are better than writers who getting paid writing stuff for that character without feeling the same attachment like the fans.
Ashley's original writer almost seems to be in love with her.
Too bad he's not in the team anymore.

No, not "doing". Hating his job and wanting it to end.
I know this feeling too well - sometimes we got such contracts you just dream to get rid of

I can't remember the name, but didn't the writer move to the Dragon Age team, I think to write both Bethany and Carver for DA2?
IA I feel that the original writer got Ashley more but I did enjoy most of the Ash scenes in ME3 I just wish there was more. I really missed Ash's snarky comments in ME3...
