I honestly think the Ashley romance is the best in the game, just because it actually feels like a relationship. Life isn't smooth-sailing, people aren't smooth-sailing in general. They have their rocky moments and let their emotions get the better of their judgement. This was the case for Ash, and honestly she just felt real, unlike Liara who felt forced.
I liked your whole post, but this part especially. A good, short show of why I like Ashley's dynamic. Now, it's not as though I don't appreciate the characters that stuck with me from beginning to end, that believed in me and never stopped...BUT that doesn't mean I want to demonize those that...faltered along the way. It may be hard for some players to see because that have the hero's perspective, they know they're right...the characters within don't. So yes, faith in Shepard is an exceptional quality, but we shouldn't hold it against characters who don't have it, because then it wouldn't be exceptional.
Conflict is necessary for story and people. Without it, both are boring. Both male and female Shepard have at least one love interest that believe in him/her unconditionally, and that's fine, but it would be stale if each one were on the same wavelength.
That being said, I don't think Ashley ever completely lost faith in Shepard. She tried to stick to her principles and she wasn't going to just accept things at face value; it's that's part of why I like her, and part of why my Shepard loves her. I remember it was even a dialogue choice in ME1 when Ash asks if you'll accept her with her baggage, "I like a challenge".
