Why is there so much hate for Ashely outside of this and maybe the Kaiden threads?
People say 'she's a ****, she hates aliens, she's racist' etc etc, but if you ever actually talk with her that all goes out the window, she describes Tali as being like a sister to her, as the games go on she becomes closer and closer with the alien squadmates on the Normandy and she's a human surely there is gonna be some suspicion about alien lifeforms.
So what's peoples problem?

Lack of interest in that character.
Besides that, the "talk" on Horizon made a lot of ppl mad. Actually, sometimes it feels as if Ash is the second most hated character in the series. Truth is: she's only pretty much hated in this fandom, the ordinary player doesn't care at all - or likes her.

i let my friend borrow my mass effect 1&2 games and he likes ashley, she is one of his favorite characters. Tali coming in second since he couldn't have Ash in ME2. So yeah, maybe that's a little backing for your ordinary player statement.

Human nature is the fault. There's not much we can do about that I'm afraid. I think that a lot of the misunderstanding comes from people's own unwillingness to understand in the first place, or to be more precise, they do not want to think beyond the surface. Ashley has a very deep character unlike some others and to be able to understand her you need to be able to interpret her subtext (not sure if that is the right way to describe it...).
A lot of people do not want to have to think about what they are doing and cannot be bothered to explore a character's different/unique perspectives and motivations. This is the main reason why you do not see many "thinking" games on the market nowadays.
In short, more often that not people judge things at face value. If you do this with a character like Ash, you're going to end up with a skewed perspective.
The racist/xenophobic branding is an example of this, along with social programming thanks to racism being a huge taboo - but that's another subject entirely.
Just my 2 cents!

Because, you know, the current day equivilent - giving unvetted foreign nationals full access to an advanced U.S. warship - certainly wouldn't cause concern among anyone who isn't a racist.

Precisely!
I fully agree with you and BP.
I'm curious, would any of you say that you are like Ash in that you are naturally cautious with the unknown? I know I am. Sorry if this comes across badly, but surely you would have to be a first class muppet to think otherwise?

I wouldn't say that I'm extremely cautious or anything, but I do think there's a difference between "trusting" and "outright stupid."
In ME1, Shepard - especially Paragon Shepard - is outright stupid in terms of who he allows full access to the Ship. It's one of the few cases where I actually disagree with my paragon "canon" Shep. Ashley actually has it totally right.
Think about who you're allowing full access to an advanced, top secret Alliance warship:
1. Garrus - Okay, the turians helped build the Normandy, but think about this on an individual level. The guy's a renegade cop who we saw arguing with his superiors, before he left C-Sec in frustration. Beyond that, at the point where Ash expresses her concern, you know virtually nothing about him. Doesn't exactly signal "stable personality," does it?
2. Liara - The fricking daughter of someone who has allied Saren, who, at that point, we think to be the main villian.
3. Wrex - A mercanary who, depending on when you first meet him, can be seen spoiling for a fight with C-Sec. Oh yeah - he's also a krogan. You know, one of those guys who are known for their hostility, and who nearly ripped the galaxy apart a few centuries back.
4. Tali - A quarian, who is not only allowed on the ship, but also allowed to poke around with its engines. The quarians, of course, are known for sending people out on pilgrimage to obtain useful items - say, advanced technology - and bring it back to their fleet. Of course, it's not like Tali is on her pilgrimage or anything. Oh, wait!
(BTW - as much as I like Tali, based on what we see in the ship description when we meet up with her in ME3, I'm thinking that, in the end, she really did bring more back to the fleet than just information on the geth. In modern day terms, that would be known as a "security leak" or "espionage," and Shepard would partly be at fault for it taking place)

I agree, although the story wouldnt have been the same if we distrusted them all. Thats for renegades. Although... it does make our Paragon Sheps seem a bit stupid in the head for some of the game

Well, part of the beauty of Mass Effect is that you get to learn that all these guys turn out to be trustworthy, and in many cases examples of breaking the "sterotypes" associates with their species.
In the "long run" paragon Shep turns out to be right - we can trust every one of them. But in the short run, Ash was right. We really shouldn't have been letting people we have no idea about full access to the ship.
Of course, maybe paragon Shep isn't so right with Tali. Honestly, Edwin Shepard felt a little egg on his face when he saw how that quarian ship in ME3 was configured. He didn't get too mad with Tali, but he did feel just a tiny bit betrayed - would have been nice if she hadn't taken critical/classified ship info back to the quarian fleet.
Maybe she felt justified after ME2 because she picked up the latest tech off a Cerberus ship. Or something.

Sheesh, talk about getting the wrong end of the stick!
In all fairness to the guy, he did probably exaggerate for dramatic attention. I'll admit, I do it too sometimes!
Like I said in that ridiculous Ash vs. Tali thread, more fool them! It's fine that they don't like her. I expect people to not like certain characters because it would be rather boring if they all acted the same and didn't have some conflicting ideas. My problem is that they just show an unwillingness to see reason and/or put things into perspective. Oh well, each to their own.

I also don't understand refusing to talk to a particular character, like with Ashley. It's basically saying, "I don't want to make full use of the content in this game I paid good money for."

Agreed, although i think Javik is a pain in the behind for most of the game, i talk to him for more info on the protheans. My Shep is open minded - so i put up with it.

Shepard: Hey you big 1500 year old ex-clan leader and dangerous Krogan with that big effing gun in your hands ...
Wrex: Shepard.
Shepard: ... let me show you the most vulnerable part of my ship and then your place right next to Ashley Williams with all those darn fine weapons, every single one able to take down the core in our engine room ...
Wrex: Williams.
Ashley: I'm not sure if that's a good idea.
Shepard: ... have fun.
* two years later *
Shepard: Here, Mr. Assassine Thane. Have your dry place in the life support.
EDI: I'm not sure if that's a good idea.
Shepard: It is! Look at his smile!
* a bit later *
Shepard: Take your place right here, where any of your biotic singularities might cripple the Normandy, Jack.
Gabby: I'm not sure if that's a good idea, Commander.
Shepard: Look at her smile!
...
