He-he, John Williams? Well, his name means too much to change it. And usually wifes take name of their husbands. (=

Speaking of kids, here's an good question. If Shep and Ash have kids, would they use the 'Williams' name and carry on her legacy rather than Shepard's? Or would your Shep's ego not allow that?

Ash is just starting to drag her family name out of the mud so it would be a shame for it to not live on.

an intersting question indeed. I wrote a fic where Kallena dn Ashley celebrate mothers day and they have a son named Kaidan Alenko Williams-Shepard. I always pegged Ashley as a hyphenation kinda gal because of hwo proud she is to be a Williams. Shepard owuld be a fool to ask her to ditch the name she worked so hard to clear.Posted Image

Frank Williams.

Maybe that'll give him certain amount of privacy. Of finally all those dorks stops to call him "Shepard"!
I hate to be refered by surname (and I served with 5 guys with same name as mine).

There is no restriction not allowing you to take your wife surname, IIRC.

Edwin Shepard hates his first name. So he asks everyone, including Ash, to call him Shepard.

Another reason why Ash will probably keep her last name - it would be weird for her to go around calling her husband "Shepard" if that's both of their last names. Posted Image

Depends on the Shepard I suppose.
-Spacer!Shep would probably keep his name, since his family has it's own proud military tradition.
-Earthborn!Shep has no ties to his name, except what he made of it. Maybe take her name.
-Colonist!Shep could take her name and, through marriage, would be part of a family again.

ETA random thought before I forget due to lack of sleep:

Which background do yall think fits best when romancing Ash?  On the one hand, I like the chemistry of both of them having military family in common.  On the other hand, I like how Ash's strong family ties can compliment the loss of Shepard's family in the colonist background.  Like he'd be getting a package deal, what with her big family.  As for earthborn, eh, never cared for that one personally.

ETA: last one I swear, going to bed now :P

But DWH, just think - if she takes his name, they could do a movie based on them.  Title could be "Shepard & Shepard" Posted Image

Eh, Edwin Shepard has a colonist background, and he'll keep his name. He wants to remember his old family.

Wouldn't demand that Ash take his name, though. He understands how someone would be proud of their name.

Have you considered changing name, no? It's not that difficult in western bureaucracies. Harder here. Probably total horror in Russia.

Well, I know few couples where both spouses have same name. Not just surname - name. Or first name for our Yankees here. I even know one couple where wife's maiden's surname is identical to her husband's. So nothing changed, actually.

Billy Joel - Uptown girl, eh?

Does it really matters? But if you insist, I think Spacer.

Ash:

1. What's with the makeover?
2. Wait, why did you get drunk?
3. Why the sudden change of heart about Cerberus?
4. Why, if you were so jealous of Liara BEFORE we were together, does me being with Tali now not seem to bother you at all?

Things I wish my Shepard could have asked Ashley Williams in Mass Effect 3, in order of most wished. Alas...

My Earthborn Shepard took his name 'John Shepard' as a Psuedonym from someone he admired before he joined the Military. The person that actually put the idea in his head to join, Shepard wanted to fight with him and saw that person as de facto father figure, but he was KIAed before Shepard got the chance. So EB!Shepard took the name to honor him.

He wouldn't give up 'Shepard' bit he'd be more than willing to hyphon the name.

1. She was an enlisted soldier in ME1, and she's an officer in ME3. Obviously, officers have looser dress codes in the Alliance military.

2. She wanted to blow off some steam for a change. I think she explains that herself. What, is Shepard the only one who's allowed to ever get drunk?

3. What? She's very consistent about Cerberus. She didn't like Cerberus in ME2, which is why she wouldn't join Shepard. She still doesn't like Cerberus in ME3.

4. She didn't know Liara that well in ME1. By ME3, she knows Tali, and thinks of her as a sister.

Also, there can be some catty remarks if you take both of them on the Geth dreadnought mission, so obviously she's not 100% okay with it.

Especially Anderson, Hackett, Shepard, Moreau and Alenko. So freaking loose.

As you pointed out, MY Shepards are teetotallers, all of them, never drank anything and there is strict prohibition on ship. Airlock over there. ↗

Yeah. Ash and Shepard deserve a happy life together.

The endings, and the fact that there isn't even an option for a happy outcome, just make the Shepley relationship fundamentially unfair. Ash has to go through Shepard dying, only to get him back, only to lose him again almost immediately after they've worked everything out.

Like I've said before, without my head canon, I'm not even sure it would be worth it to romance Ash anymore. It would keep her from a lot of pain if Shepard is just rude to her from the start in ME1.

Yeah ...

Garrus: He's sitting in the bar, watching us ...
Vega: So Turians have a "Heaven" too?
Garrus: Not really. We do have some idea of an "afterlife", but ... it's an individual thing. My father never thought about this, I do.
Vega: Sounds pretty much like a liberal variant of "Heaven", if you ask me.
Ashley: Hey you two ...
Vega: You finally left the cabin, LC - what's up?
Ashley: Drop the rank, James. It doesn't matter anymore. And I'm doing fine.
Vega: Really? You look as if you got spat out by Hell itself ...
Ashley: *scowls*
Garrus: We're glad you finally came down ... losing Shepard is hard to take, Ashley.
Ashley: Yeah ...
Garrus: Do you want to talk?
Ashley: *nods*
Vega: Should leave you two alone then. Something tells me they need me in the armory ... *leaves*
Ashley: Garrus ... do you remember the talk we had when I came back on the Normandy? Just a few months ago ... feels like a lifetime now ...
Garrus: You told me everything about how you felt when Shepard died the first time. How you couldn't cope that loss - instead, you buried yourself under piles of work, attented officer school - just to keep your mind busy.
Ashley: *nods* ... it helped me a bit. But I never fully moved on ... every single night I was praying to God to send Skipper back. And one day he came back, but not the way I had hoped.
Garrus: Horizon and Cerberus ...
Ashley: Cerberus. I was confused - part of my was glad Shepard was back, but another part hated him. I couldn't take the idea my Skipper was working for them now ... even if he had only the best in his mind. Seeing Cerberus logos slapped all over him ... and I was asking myself if they did something to him. In my mind, Shepard changed. And when I got a message by Dr. Chakwas, telling me how much parts of him got replaced by tech, I wondered if this man was still Shepard - or a husk.
Garrus: Shepard always acted like a human to me, Ashley ...
Ashley: I know - however, I didn't know that at that time. And later ... well, when he returned to Earth, I refused to see him. I couldn't look into his eyes anymore - not after what he had done with the Bahak System. Later I realized he had no other choice but still ... he became like Saren. A cyborg, willing to end countless lifes for his goals ...
Garrus: Hmm ...
Ashley: And when we had to work together, he did everything to convince me he was still the same. And yes ... he was. Implants or not, Shepard was still my Skipper ... my love. He showed me in the hospital and to be honest, without his visits, I knew I had shot him to protect the Council. I'm glad I didn't ... I ... would have regretted it for the rest of my life.
Garrus: Yes, I was there. Good thing he could convince you Udina was behind all this.
Ashley: In hindsight I believe Udina had planned that showdown. He wanted to get rid off Shepard once and for all - and making his best friend ... and lover pointing a gun at him must have felt like sweet victory to Udina.
Garrus: You don't know that ... Udina just did what he thought would be the best for your people.
Ashley: On expense of all of our allies? He was a fool. And I was the bigger fool following him. It doesn't matter anymore ...
Garrus: Indeed.
Ashley: And the last few weeks with Skipper ... he was back. And when we finally got through all issues ... we had spend the night together. The last night before the final battle. It was ... like we were made for each other. I was his ... and he was mine. It was our night, Garrus. We never were that close before, not even the night before Ilos. For the first time in three years, I felt complete, happy and ... everything as right. And then we had to go into the fray. I told him I don't want him to leave - but he had to ...
Garrus: *nods* ... he's waiting at the bar now, Ashley. For you.
Ashley: Thanks, Garrus. I just wish he would wait in the cabin for me. I ... still can feel his presence. It's as if he's still here and didn't die three months ago. Just ... I know he won't come back. There's no project Lazarus rebuilding him - he's gone. Skipper left me behind a second time ... *starts to cry* ... he promised he would come back ... *voice cracking*
Garrus: Shepard loves you, Ashley. He still does ... and he waits for the day when you can follow him.
Ashley: *closes eyes* ... thank you ... for everything.

That's the stuff! Poor Ashley she doesn't deserve to lose him twice, I suppose all LIs go through the same thing but I don't care about them cause I haven't romanced them before. Plus Liara will just end up with a new mate soon enough so Tali and Ash get it worse

But Rudy, they aren't affected by his death at the start of ME2 so they don't lose him twice. Also you've probably already had a relationship by the start of ME2 so if you go for one of those you've cheated on your previous LI and died so they are gonna feel even worse

Tali's emotions at ME2 beginning are under investigation. Not saying they were retconned. Plus, there is Garrus, in case you didn't romanced her, so... fanservice?
Liaira is out of the airlock question - I stopped understanding her somewhere in ME2.
Ash is dead for my playthrough. And according to saves provided by my friend (to whom, in turn, I provided mine :D), I also have pretty much "WTF?" Posted Image impression on ME3 Ash. Not on ME1, though, ME3 only.
Not sure of Kaidan's sudden change in ME3 is canon, and not part of fanservice or whatever.

Dannycni wrote...

Yeah, I head relations. With my sniper rifle. She was taken away from me!Posted Image Twice - look at how horrible Viper in ME3.Posted Image

Jokes aside: there is no guarantee that Jack's or Miranda's shock, grieve and loss is lesser than of those of above. To some extent their emotional lash could be even greater, much greater, for example for Jack, who finally had someone she can trust and turn her back to (figuratively speaking).
Miranda could be cold and calm on surface, but maybe not all the way through; we have no idea what's inside, maybe she has pretty soft "stuffing" (ahem, sorry, due lack of better terms), so she could be doubly lashed for loss of her beloved and knowing this time she won't bring him back.
Kelly's biography is total mistery, but she left impression of pretty harmless person.

I won't go to "Ash/Liara/Tali already got used to losing Shepard".

And? There was a lot of canonical things, symbolic even. They were changed, and may I add - by much better authours.

That's true but as a saying goes (that I have just made up) 'It's better to have loved and lost than to have loved and lost twice!' Jack is an emotional nut job so yes she could take his death very badly as she finally has someone to love, Kelly is unimportant in my eyes I will never understand the fascination with her, Miranda also has father issues and so could look at someone like Shepard and finally have a positive male figure in her life so to lose him would be devestating.

But for Ashley/Tali/Liara (although I don't think you can romance Tali in ME1) to lose the person you love twice is gonna seriously mess you up, especially if you look at how close they really are and how much their love means to those characters.
