To be fair, if Shepard is an infiltartor, he can actually give her tips on how to go about covert ops. Or even just general experience as an N. I imagine he's had to do some infiltrator work in his time.

Edwin Shepard is a straight forward soldier. Though he's a soldier with substantial special forces experience.

I always like to imagine he's taking her under his wing for Spectre training. I think (but I'm not 100% sure) that Spectres normally get trained under a more experienced Spectre for at least a brief period. Shepard didn't because of unique circumstances, and (I like to think) because the Spectre who volunteered to take him on if he was given Spectre status was dead (Nihlus).

EDIT

Ash and Shepard are in Shepard's quarters, kissing passionately. They're making their way toward the bed.

Ash: So... Is this a normal part of Spectre training?

Shepard: Yes. And it's very important you do everything I say...

So it would seem that the S designation stands for a "Quick Reaction Force." The Rangers to the Delta? The Paras to the SAS?

Or think of it this way.

The Normandy is the forefront of any effort against the Reapers. Shepard is gonna need the best in order to accomplish his goals. Hence why he took Ashley on board the Normandy so that she could remain focused and at her best. Denying her access to the Normandy would throw her off her A game and she'd wouldn;t be as effective.

Maybe the "S" designation has something to do with quick response or covert infantry.

And now that I've had to imagine Ash not being on the Normandy with Shepard, I have to be sad for a bit. Posted Image

I mean... I know it's technically probably better for her career. I think Edwin Shepard even feels a little guilty about keeping her on the Normandy and not encouraging her to go out and develop her career on her own. But he actually trusts her more than anyone else on the squad, and wants (even needs) her to be with him.

Ashley.... LIKE A BOSS. Posted Image

Is it weird that I feel a little proud of her for that? lol

Too bad. My Shepard couldn't let her go. How could he when she's standing there with the sad puppy dog eyes asking to come along with him? He has to obey. Besides, my Shep needs her with him... apparently. Posted Image

Oh la la...

*Ashley and Shepard contineu to move towards the bed. They fall passionately onto the bed, Ashley underneath and Shepard on top. Suddenly Ashley flips Shepard onto his back and straddles him

Ash: *leans in and whisper. And what part of training is this?

Shepard: Tactical reversal.

Cue drum beat.

Yeah, and she does actually ask to come along. Shows up at the Normandy dock before Shepard can board and everything. So, it would seem it's where she wants to be.

Honestly, I think Edwin Shepard just needs her there, too, since he spent ME2 missing her and since ME3 is basically one long crap fest for him. I think having her around just helps hold him together.

It's hard to say what Ash is, or what she should be doing. The war is a special case, where normal procedure goes right out the airlock. Shepard is spearheading the fight against the Reapers, so he gets first pick for his crew. And Ash would probably be fine putting her own career on hold until, you know, the galaxy is safe from total annihilation.

In a hypothetical situation, with no Reapers to worry about...I think she and Shepard could find a way to make their relationship work. Whatever the "S" designation is, perhaps as 686 said, it could compliment Shepard's "N". An advance scout force to his supercommandodeathsquad. Or if she still becomes a Spectre, they don't always work alone, right? They could have seperate assignments and just use the Normandy as a base of operations.

OK, so it might take some Spectre-level rule bending, but my imagination can and will keep them together :P

Also, just a thought: unless it's been changed since the last time I read up on it, the N1-N6 ranks are for training purposes only. Once you graduate from the program, you're N7. So, either the "N" works different from the "S", or...maybe Ash is still in training? Do we have any idea how long she's had that designation? Maybe its new to her, along with her most recent promotion?

You can imagine Shepard's disappointment when she takes that armor off and he finds that her "package" has magically shrinked. It's like those chicks that use chicken fillets or wear two bras - they trick you. NOT FAIR!

Pfft... I know they just used the Femshop model on Ash during the romance scene but I "headcanon" it as her "assets" grew as she became even more "mature". No implants or false advertising.  :P

Both Shepard and the VS were made SpecTRes for political reasons so they probably got ripped off in the training section. I always wished that Nihlus had survived so he could show Shepard the ropes.

Shepard IMO would not be the best choice to train Ash/Kai on being a SpecTRe since (s)he doesn't really know what it means either. If I were Ash I would pass on Shepard and request a SpecTRe with real training and long-term experience. Sorry Shepard.

Now if I wanted N7 training ... Hello Shepard.

Being a Spectre means more or less figuring out how to operate independently, make potentially galaxy changing decisions, and function properly in a world free of most restrictions on what you can do.

Although he lacks formal Spectre training, I'd say Shepard figured most of that out. But you are right, he did get screwed on the whole "mentor" thing with Nihlus' early death.

Shepard is making it up as (s)he goes along and that is a shame since SpecTRes are normally given field training under an experienced mentor. It's that saying ... you don't know what you don't know. I would guess that there are things that had Shepard been aware it would have helped make some things easier.

Just because Shepard, due to circumstances beyong his/her control, started off in the dark ... (s)he would not want that for the VS. I've always figured that if my Shepard had decided to stay as a SpecTRe she would request that she work with another very experienced SpecTRe after the reapers were gone. But that is just me. Additional training no matter where you are in life is a good thing.

This thread is always fun to read and is informative. Still wish Ash had more importance to the plot. They should explain what she was doing during Mass Effect 2 in VS dlc. You can never have enough Ashley.

From what I understand:
N - Special Forces
S - Airborne

The "N7" designation is so prestigious that it is the ONLY one allowed to be displayed on the armor/uniform.  Why Ash has the S1 on her uniform, I don't know.

My two cents

The problem is, that only soldiers with rank N7, not N5 or even N6, can display this on armor.

Ashley: Crap. Sorry Skip'. *presses an icepac to his cheek*.
Shepard: Ah! Ah. Damn it.
Ashley: I didn't realize that you thought it was a feint. I didn't mean to slug you so hard.
Shepard: Gez, you fight dirty.
Ashley: And here I thought you liked it when I fight dirty.
Shepard: I do. 'Specially up in the cabin, but damn it. I think you broken my cheekbone.
Ashley: Yeah... completely an accident.
Shepard: I know that, but breaking titanium-reinforced bones? I don't know if I should be impressed or fearful.
Ashley: I'd say a little bit of column 'A' and a bit of 'B'.
Shepard: I think I can manage that. But how are your knuckles? I imagine they're a bit numb?
Ashley: Surprisingly not, considering hitting your face is like punching a dreadnaught's hull.
Shepard: Not entirely sure if I should be complimented or insulted by that remark.
Ashley: What? Both of you are powerful, heavily armoured and wreak havoc on what or whoever is dumb enough to get in your way.
Shepard: ... I stand by my previous statement.
Ashley: I'm just teasing you, Skipper.Posted Image
Shepard: Uh huh.Posted Image
