So I was right! Welcome new fellow-ash-buddy! You're definitely an ex-lurker. I'm afraid you've got no choice but to become a regular poster in this thread now. Sorry, you've doomed yourself by revealing youself to us. Image IPB

Doomed? Oh no, maybe I can sneak back off to lurker dark space... or not, somebody just blew up the relay <_<
I guess I'm stuck here. :P

Seems like people's tastes in ME love interests vary by region, it seems from this thread at least that Ashley is popular amongst Eastern Europeans. I wonder why that is.

That may be. Personally I'm from the US and I always managed to romance Ash. But I prefer a woman who can handle herself and back me up when times get rough. Never cared for the shrinking violets.

I'm from the US and haven't been able to romance anyone else. Ash is the one ;)

Well, she's also quite popular in Middle Europe and GB.  :P

I'd die to meet a woman like her. Heard such type is quite common in USA 'though.

He lived there for a while ...

I'm from Northern Ireland (possibly the only one on here so woohoo) and I love her to bits. But our Eastern European Ash fans do seem especially transfixed, at least if the conversations between Ushanka and Rudy Lis are anything to go by (although nobody can beat Datas love)

This, or girls who make a third world African kids seem well-nutritioned. There are some at the gym though that are uhhh... nice looking.

And I live on the East Coast of North America, so that counts maybe. Ash attracts the Eastern people.

I live in the part of England known as the West Country, so not only Eastern people. Although, now that I think about it, I am on the Eastern side of the West Country...

Sorry, I know this comment was made a few hours ago, but I had to respond to it...

That conversation won't be added because it's religious.

And Bioware's heavy handed "Adam and Eve" symbolism at the end of the synthesis ending wasn't?

Mind you, I don't object to that part of the game from a religious standpoint or anything. I object to it because it seemed a little too obvious. And, like all of the synthesis ending, an odd combination of unsettling and absurd.

Seriously, though. It's supposed to be a mature game. Ash should be able to discuss religion. If someone doesn't like it, well... tough.

See I don't get why people harp all over Ash and her character for being religious. What about Thane and all of his Gods? Or Liara and her constant "Goddess"? Garrus mentions the "Spirits" frequently too.

It's hypocritical and annoying.

Quite a few people - often the same ones - also complain about Kaidan "whining" about his past. Even though you pretty much have to drag that story out of him.

So, in short: Kaidan's "whiney" because you can eventually convince him to tell you about something that happened years ago, and which he's put behind him, and Ash "shoves her religion in your face" becasue she has all of one conversation in ME1 where she discusses being religious.

The thing is, people will always find something to hate. Some people hate religion with such a passion that they in turn hate Ashley for being religious. It happens.

Also, its a double standard. Alien religion is more acceptable to ME fans than ours.

@DWH1982: Well, with some conversation options, she in fact has three conversations where she mentions "God" or something spiritual.

See, even if that's the case, I don't remember her being particularly agressive about her religion.

Neither do I. She never pushed it and in fact she was hesitant about sharing her beliefs in case Shepard didn't agree.

^She isn't, yet I do agree that simply because she mentions it there are people who instantly take a disliking to her and will feel she is forcing her views on them etc. It happens in real life too. People dont respond the same with Thane etc because they aren't talkin about earthly religions so people will believe they are as fake as the alien races who observe them. Close minded people will always make mountains out of mole hills because Ashley never is forceful or arrogant with her beliefs.

Agreed, she isn't aggressive about it all. However, for some, even that one conversation was too much, which is unfortunate to say the least. Religion just irks some people for certain reasons. Also, people find it easier to hate than to love.

It is unfortunate. Especially when there are people of those very religions and beliefs who do force it down people's throats that ruin it for those who don't.

Yea it is the religious nuts that ruin the image of religion and so some people find it an easy target to attack and therefore as soon as Ashley mentions it she will instantly hit a nerve with some people and they will judge her for it. Although these are the people who would call her racist aswell so I'm guessing they really didn't spend any time actually listening and getting to know the characters but it's their loss.

With Ash, I think a lot of people stop talking to her after she expresses concern about letting unvetted aliens roam around the ship.

Which is stupid, because she happens to be right about that. I'm sorry. She is.

I wonder if there are players who stop talking to her after she mentions being religious, as well.

Not talking to a character makes no sense. It just makes it impossible to ever break your dislike for them, because you never get to know them.

I've come across several people who have done that and it's disappointing. Why judge someone so harshly merely because you don't agree with them? I didn't like Jack in ME2, but when I took the time to understand why she is the way she is, I came to like her...to a degree. But with her character growth in ME3 I actually grew to respect her. It's a shame some people can't do the same with Ash or at the very least agree to disagree without wanting her dead.

A lot of ME fans are just kids. Kids can tend to see things in black and white sometimes.

I also think that's one of the reasons so many ME fans get upset about Ash questioning Shepard. I think when you're younger, it's easier to have a "with me or against me mentality," and maybe miss the fact that Ash is actually acting quite reasonable and asking questions a "real" person could be expected to ask.

I wonder about the average age of the players who romance the Virmire survivor versus the average age of players who go for the other romances, or actively hate the VS. I mean no offense to people who prefer the other romances, but it seems (to me) like the VS is more of a mature option, in some ways.

Disliking a character is one thing, if you have valid reason rather than your own sort sightedness, but the level of hate Ashley gets must be unparalleled to any other ME character and it just seems so unfair.

DWH, but would kids really care as much about 'racism' or 'relgious fanaticalism'? I would have thought if kids were playing it they wouldn't really think too much about that stuff but it is quite immature to jump to those conclusions about Ashley so maybe it is an age thing.
And I think you're right the VS does seem to have a more mature relationship, I mean that emotionally and mentally not sexually, which is part of the reason I love the relationship with Ash so much.
