@Spitfire: If you're gonna bring regulations into this, then guys like Joker should all have their beards shaved.

@Obvakhi: Beards are allowed under certain circumstances (not too sure on the actual details). My unit is allowed to grow beards in winter time. In my current Platoon there is a guy with a beard. My units old mess sergeant had a beard. If I could post the hair regulations page the CF has, I would. It allows for a beard.

And, ever noticed that Shepard during ME1 never grows a beard? Easy, because as a Alliance officer should, he shaves everymorning before stepping out of his room and heading to say good morning to Ash. ME3, he was under hourse arrest and his "give the frack level" most likely dropped a bit.

Then why can't Ashley fall under the 'certain circumstances' in a military force 200 years in the future? And trust me, if FemShep could have the option for long hair(without mods), people would be wearing it. Why do you think the new default FemShep with the longest hair won?
I remember back in the day of ME1, fans were even demanding for ManShep to have long hair.

With regards to hair length and beard regulations, I would like to point out that some countries have relaxed regulations with regards to hair for certain special forces units (its a joke that in London you can spot the JTF 2 operators, just by looking for the guys with beards).

Given that Shepard is an N7 (Alliance Special Forces), maybe the Alliance allowed relaxed standards for Shepard? As for Ashley...perhaps the S-designation merits the same considerations (I'm going with my "shocktrooper" interpretation.

From a dramatic viewpoint, Ashley's long hair / abandonment of the bun, is supposed the reflect the fact that she's now more sure of herself vs in ME1.

Perhaps its a visual method of communicating how more "comfortable" she is with herself and her relationship with the Alliance?

As for Joker's beard, again its supposed to represent how much of a maverick he is...

I completely forgot about special forces. As for the rest, it sounds pretty reasonable and the fact that we are talking about video games. Injecting too much reality can ruin them.

Her new look (her hair down) is simply a immersion breaking experience for me. From a person with military experience, an Alliance officer would never actually do a parade or go into a fight with hair like that. Just look at femShep...does she have the option for long luxurious hair? No. Every female officer (and female NCM) Ive seen, has a bun during working hours or short hair. Its regulations. Now that Ash is an officer, she has to lead by example, first and foremost, and her new outlook isn't setting one.

Outside of work...hells ya!

I agree that fighting with long hair down makes no sense but I don't think that the comparison Femshep and other Alliance personel is fair because I see the reason for them all having short hair and buns more to do with the difficulties of them having long hair in terms of graphics and whatnot rather than Bioware caring about immersion.
As someone who plays Femshep I know that to mod Femshep to have long hair (Ashley's or Miranda's) involves quite a workaround because Ashley and Miranda are wearing their hair like armour so having unimportant characters or a character like Femshep who can have many different armour/casual appearance possiblities would involve more effort than the Bioware team wants to make. This is also why the ME3 default Femshep hair isn't offered in the character creator, because Femshep has to have a certain facial structure in order for it to work properly. I've seen many people say they think the new default's hair, even though it isn't long, is also impractical because she has bits of hair falling all over her face/across one eye.
A significant number of players who RPG as a female in fact want long hair for the character they create so I think if it had been easy to implement Bioware would have included in the character creator (like they did in DA2).
Bioware gives characters unique hairstyles - Ashley, Miranda, Jack, Femshep, Allers - as a way to make them stand out from the rest of the crowd and I think in addition to wanting to make her more appealing to the male audience that's also why she got long hair, because having a bun is ordinary and Ashley needed something to make her stand out more.
Personally I love the look of Ashley in both ME1 and ME3 - I wish it was possible to have Ashley have her hair in her good old ME1 bun when fighting, and then have her hair down when in her casual Alliance outfit so that we could enjoy both of her looks in a way that makes more sense.
I do understand people's feelings about immersion because everytime in ME2 I see Miranda with her silly breathing mask when everyone else has their head fully helmeted, or Jack wearing practically nothing when fighting...ugh, why oh why.
Anyway, hasn't it been established that hair in Mass Effect doesn't move?!! So I'm pretty sure Ash's hair never gets in her way ;)

I could have create a whole quote tree from the various responses I have read lately but decied just ot make this a general post . First of all I have No problems with anything about ash or miri personaly dess or the way the used or didnt use thier personality sensuality or body. I thought they were both well done .

It amazes me when I see people complaining about the way the women look or are dressed especially when referring Ash or Miri. attaire. The way Miri uses her body and sensuality is great and relistic to her  peronanlity and " real women" as well. There are real women that are alike to both ash an miri.

Really Real women do the same thing and peole talk about them the same way. "omg i can see why she ways hired ..." "i bet she was hired just for her skill". I was let go for no real reason a job years back and my replacement was a attractive female's its no secret that some women are able to use other "resources "

Look at exotic dancers and escorts. I actually have repect for the ones that willing choose to o that as a profession becase they break aways from what is " the natural order " and use thier natural gifts to make more money per hour than the average person does . The top ones could problem even match a top corp exec in pay an work less hours doing it. The 9-5 world is a slave market and i applauded anyone that free themselves of it .

Seriously the way people that complain about women being dress to sexy and using thier sexuality is amazing.

Would the complainers be happier if game companies dressed all the women in Volos type armour?

**fixed error

The way I see it is if I'm not getting banned for what I'm posting, then I ain't overreacting, but hey. I'm stating my opinion on the subject whether people think I'm raging red about it behind a desk or not (which I'm not). ;)

Don't get me wrong, I wanted to see Ashley with her hair down as much as the next guy. From my perspective it could have been a lot worse. They already blew up her boobs to the maximum, but still it could have easily been a lot worse. I'm not really hating on her jacket, but wearing it into battle isn't what I imagined Ashley doing at all. She has more sense than that. she even says so herself. It feels like something the character herself wouldn't do. Yet BW still make it an option because it's considerably "sexy" for men players. Why do you think Ashley got a unique boob and body flaunting casual outfit, and Kaidan gets the standard? Yeah, because she's a female. Sexism.

I can honestly live with what they have done to Ashley. On Miranda though:

Miranda's attire is not well done, period. The appearance just lets down her intellect and damages her character for me. There is nothing smart about wearing a tight cat suit into battle, with heels. It's basically giving up practicality simply for sexy which is a bit (I apologize), bimbo-ish. You wear that into a fire-fight and you deserve to be shot up. Miranda is an extremely intelligent character, but wearing that into intense combat? Is not sensible in the sligtest. There's where it damages her character. I wish Bioware would respect her a bit more, instead she's become the sex symbol of ME. Those constant ass shots? Ridiculous come ME3. They're not even subtle in the slightest anymore. I'm sure any dedicated Miranda fan would agree with me. Miranda is an operative on the run, not a street dancer trying to make extra money. I can't even explain EDI's ******… like seriously? However, A woman can definitely be "sensual" and "sexy" there's a time and place for it. But the battlefield isn't it.

Who said anything about Volus armor? That's not practical or combat-ready either. (;

I agree completely about Miranda; there's nothing wrong with her being beautiful but the skin tight outfit, the constant butt shots, and the shallow romance degenerate her character to nothing more than a sex symbol. The ****** on EDI was pretty stupid and just made me wonder "why?".

Do they? Or they wear beards just because it fits their current area of operation? Should they be transfered to some reagon where beard considered suspicious, you think they still will wear them?
There are regulations against beards for many reason, including how they obstruct fitting facial oxygen masks or gas masks.
But it doesn't seems to be an issue in ME, where character can wear no eye protection in open space or dusty environment or have oxygen mask that barely fits their faces because otherwise it would require tremendous amount of work to fit and animate it right, and they have to think about memory saving.

Like what? Most of his beards fit into those regs I've seen, stubble could reflect only "5 o'clock shadow", so to speak - I served with two guys she had to shave twice a day, otherwise they had sandpaper-like on their faces.

Ahm... And where the hell she going to infiltrate with that new looks of hers? I have list of images in my head, but can't find nothing serious... Oh, wait! Consort! That's how Cerberus got in - they just were hiding under her bed! Cleverl, devious plan.

Really? Of course, he can be allowed not to shave if shaving pose a risk to his jaw or because he got skin condition, precluding from regular shaving. Irritation and all that. Of course, he could fake those conditions, but really, he is cockpit dweller, no one gives a ****.
However - when Joker asks Shepard about medal, Shepard tells Joker he had to shave his beard. So it's commander attitude, nothing else.

Ha! More than likely. If it turns out like a cement brick, I can still have some fun with it at least. Maybe take it to the duck park and feed the ducks, like a boss.

Be careful, those animal caretakers may blame you for mistreating ducks. :)

And just for note - I was able to cook cake "just right" from fifth attempt, 3 were overcooked, one was undercooked. So practice, in small forms.

God damn it, Rudy. Thought you said it was easy? Now you're telling me that it could take me like five tries to get it anywhere decent? lol. Baking sounds hard.

And to stay on topic, Ash is a hardass who likes hard ass.

You never know what you can do till you try.
So stop talking and go try something. Tops - you'll have overcooked crust. Unless you place them in oven and go looking at dat Ash. Image IPB
So concentrate on cooking and it'll took about half an hour to bake nice cake in small form. Imagine you do that for her and try. If this won't motivate you, well, I don't know what will.

Morning everyone - how's it going with Ashley?

I start wondering why I love her character that much. And I always get the same answer: she's fascinating and the kind of woman I'd go after. Of course, it won't happen, it's just a nice thought.

Feel a bit exhausted right now. Losing co-workers and friends takes its toll.

Looking - maybe, feeling? Not sure. Feels like that brush you use to scrap all that crap out of fur. Very funny when in middle of a night you swipe or just placed your own stubble on naked arm or chest - if you fell asleep while sitting. Feeling at the morning are ****ing perfect. And god forbids you to wear a gas mask during that stage...
Plus, according to ladies, it's also not so comfortable to touch. Image IPB

Rudy: my girl loves my stubble. She complains about the feeling but she loves the look.
Well ... besides that, other girls love stubble more than smooth skin.

(Shepard's stubble looks a bit "too much" for a marine 'though).

Have cake and eat it too?;)

Dunno, who am I to judge after all, I still laughing while shaving. But my SO loves my beard if I grow up one and longer hairs (though I never grown up one, my record - 6 months without trimming, not sure how Jack grown hairs that long for 6 months, mine were shorter).

And Sheploo could have just dense stubble - though he is clean shaved and smooth at touch (at least after shaving), but he has too much hair and they too stiff. I served with one guy like that. Also he got enormous skin irritation when shaving, his skin began to look like someone tried to peel it off. Not good sign for guy in NBC regiment.

I like Shepard's stubble, the beard in 3 is a little much, but it adds to the whole 'Tired, worn and ragged' look he has. I prefer a subtler stubble, more like what Kaidan gets in 3. They both look good. Its funny, Shepard had such a babyface in 1, compare it to 3 and you can see just how much the war's aged him (can't compare it to two, his reinforced skin was very new and rejuvinated thanks to Lazarus Proj.)

Besides, I don't think Ash is complaining that much... :P

In their more playful (or drunk, or both) moments, Ash teases him about it. Calls his stubble 'Fluffy'.

Rudy: I know exactly what you mean. I refuse to wet-shave my face since it's either cut in pieces or irritated for days. So I'm a fan of dry-shaving, leaving a 1mm stubble. In that field I do look a bit like Sheploo.

Aurora: actually, Shepard's fatigue should have been shown in a different way:

- Stage 1: clean shaved, ME1 level
- Stage 2: stubble, dark circles
- Stage 3: strong stubble, wrinkles, dark circles

And maybe even new scars, depending on the progress of the story.
