This is a sample from Duet Effect chapter 2, (M!Shep's POV)

Ashley: I'm glad you're ok, Commander. The crew could use the good news after what happened to Jenkins.
Shepard: Jenkins was a valued part of the crew. He'll be remembered.
Ashley: Part of me feels guilty. If Jenkins was still around, I might not be here.
Shepard: Don't beat yourself up over it. You're a good soldier from what I saw. Have the makings of a true marksmen.
Ashley: I... thank you sir. That means alot coming from someone who has earned a Star of Terra.
Shepard: Its just a piece of metal Williams. Just do me a favour in the future.
Ashley: Sir?
Shepard: As a rule of thumb, don't go near big glowing spires that tend to explode. It's not good for my health.
Ashley: *Slight nervous laugh.* I'll keep that in mind, sir.
.

Nice, I'm patiently waiting for the next chapter.

That describes Edwin Shepard really well, too.

One of my favorite lines to use with Ash is  "everyone has baggage, the trick is to find a matching set"  in ME1. It's just so damn corney, but it fits Edwin Shepard so well. And Ash's recation is priceless. Posted Image

Well all of your Shepard's are wimps!

j/k

But you know what I mean. Instead of being a hero, he'll probably be some down in the dumps type of guy but then "finds himself" and proceeds to save the day. Some BS like that..

@Rudy - nothing against the Dominator, just caught me off guard to see a hockey reference in the Ash thread. :D

Come on, it's almost like that tale - there is always place for some hockey in your life. Posted Image

Jagr came back yes, but he's 6 or 7 years younger than Dom. Gotta remember Dom didn't go out of the NHL in style, getting replaced in the playoffs and all. Don't know if anybody would be interested in him.

Don't know, life is full of surprises. I've seen him when he played in Russia, in Moscow Spartak. I'd say he still got fire. Not sure if Ok for NHL, sometimes I just don't ****ing get them or their decisions. Regardless, I still like him as goalie. Posted Image< due lack of better cage/helmet combo. Posted Image

Well I think I can safely point out one person who would be happy with sappy Shepard in ME movie, myself. Plus if previous pages are anything to go by Example might be ok with it too.
Obviously I'd prefer that sap to be with Ashley.

I'm scared to go to bed cause this thread has exploded so much recently I'll wake up with 10 new pages to catch up on!

I can't keep up with what's produced when I'm at work when it's like this. I just sort of have to jump into whatever's going on, and hope I didn't miss anything really good - like dialouges!

Still, I'd rather see the Ash thread humming like this, instead of slow and half dead.

And here my Earthborn Shepards are essentially a mercs/assassins in the employ of the Alliance. Raised on the street, killed for the highest bidder. One of the reasons they joined the Alliance was because the Alliance beat the Red's offer. Reds offered a few credits, Alliance offered amps, training and off of Earth.

My primary Shepard that I romanced Ash with is a Paragon/Spacer/Survivor and I keep things pretty sappy with Ashley. I always liked the military brat story and it seemed to fit well with Ash's background.

Shepard: Never thought I'd hear you recite poetry.
Ashley: *slightly nervous* Just because I can drill you in the eyes at a hundred yards doesn't mean I like senstive stuff! Just don't spread it around.
Shepard: Hmm... 'We are oft to blame in this. 'Tis too much proved that with devotion's visage and pious action we do sugar o'er the devil himself.'
Ashley: ...*gapping, speechless.* That's Shakespeare.
Shepard: Very good.
Ashley: Never thought I'd hear you talk literature.
Shepard: *amused.* Just because I was raised on the street, it doesn't mean I can't be cultured. Just don't spread it around. I've got a reputation to consider, too.
Ashley: I think we can come to an arrangement.
*They laugh.*
Shepard: Talk later, Williams.
Ashley: Looking forward to it, Skipper.

I prefer War Hero. There's some extra dialogue in ME1 about how she admires Shepard being awarded the Star of Terra.

I played with a war hero background before and it was ok, but I preferred the more low key survivor story. I'm not downplaying your choice, I just felt that war hero was almost too perfect and not quite realistic.

I started out sole survivor, then switched Edwin's canon to war hero, for two reasons.

1.He's a colonist, and adding sole survivor on top of that is just too much tragedy in his background.

2. With Edwin Shepard, I'm going for the almost "over the top" style paragon/hero that you find in some older sci fi comics/films. At least on the surface - in reality, once you strip away much of the image, Edwin Shepard still has flaws.

I do miss the dynamic a sole survivor brings to the Toombs mission, but since Bioware deemed that storyline unfit for resolution, I guess it doesn't matter anymore anyway.

Yeah, after I got that message from Toombs in ME2, I thought it was going to be an interesting confrontation in ME3...it wasn't.

IMHO War Hero as well as Ruthless are just barely thought over. Not sure which is worse.

I always saw 'Ruthless' as the 'Poison chalice' scenario for my Shepards. Someone else, possibly a command unit, or the negligence of a lower ranked unit got them into an impossible situation.

One on hand, they could all get killed. On the other, only most of them could get killed. No matter what Shepard did, the casualties were gonna be high, so they tried their best to get out with as many as they could.

I've always thought it tempting to do a paragon with a ruthless background. Basically, as you said, someone who was in over his head, or someone with a colonist background who just lost control of himself.

The idea is, it'd be roleplayed so that Shepard regretted what happened, and has spent his time since then trying to make up for it, and being afraid that he'll lose control again.

Think I wrote Y4E some stuff about the ruthless background ... tried to figure out a trade off between the current (awfully written background) and one that fits with the rest ...

Rudy: I tried to make that background less "ruthless" and more "it had to be done".

In short: the surrendering Batarians tried to trick Shepard and wanted to blow up themselves.
Shepard lost most of his unit while trying to save even more (maybe also bomb related)? I simply used "Bring down the sky" as template for my idea.

I really, really hate the original ruthless background - it doesn't fit to the bunch if we want to create an unique background for Shepard. War Hero and Ruthless don't fit.

However, I can see the benefits in case Shepard simply had to do what was needed to do - and it's tainting his character.

Thanks for answer, CptData.

To be honest, I think none of original backgrounds make sense. All have WTF moments in their description, but WH and R fits together pretty well on "leitmotif" level ("on same tune" and all other idioms I can't remember at this moment, nor want to, actually). I don't have access to Project Phoenix, but I guess Y4E posted my thoughts on that.

Also I do not see anything ruthless in description of that particular backgroud. Yes, he lost 3/4 of his squad. That's 9 out of 12. Unless all they killed were three batarians - limping, deaf and blind...

And I'm not sure for taint, really. He wasn't conscripted for 25 years and held on service against his will. Unless I understood that word wrong way.

I think you got it wrong.

"Tainted" in a way that Shepard asks himself if he could have saved more of his squad. Just that.

The WH-Background has just one WTF point: how's it possible Shepard held off dozens of Batarians ALONE without any support? Doesn't make sense. Wish we simply could write Shepard a NEW background detached from the original backgrounds. Well, "Sole Survivor" makes sense, at least.

In this case - maybe. But I guess as officer, he should know he couldn't, under existed circumstances. Is doesn't remove question itself, but from those outlines I see, there was no chance for him to save more.

Survivor doesn't make much sense, I think - IIRC description says their group was attacked as soon as they hit ground. Question number one - insertion. Kodiak capacity is 12 men, so they were needed at least 4 of them, 2 with overload. And our protocol precludes pilots from taking excessive weight, but we don't have Mass Effect anyway. Grizzly capacity is unknown, if it has cargo compartment a-la BMP (then they really ****ed up all proportions), then they could have say 6 Grizzlies - if each has crew of 3 plus 6 passengers. Question number two - if they were inserted via Kodiaks, why insertion wasn't aborted if they were attacked "As soon as they hit ground"? Why they werent' picked up? Or Kodiak pilots just gave ground team their taillights? If they were inserteb on Grizzlies, well, I want to know how the hell that possible, if Grizzly look like hardtail. Also description says Shepard was alone who made it to landing zone. Somehow I can't add upt to and two here - to what landing zone he made it if they were attacked as soon as they hit ground?
And, to be honest, I see about zero reasons for placing Sole Survivor in line with WH and R. Doesn't make any sense to me. For neutral person, "following orders" or "it needs to be done" type makes more sense.

Agree on WH - should there be written that he organized makeshift militia and with their help held some position (not alone and not against 10000 attackers - weight of fire anyone?) - that could be okay.
