Biowares writers brought the Liara stuff on themselves, by the way they handeled her character.
At least part of that, I suppose, is the fact that Liara is the only one who A) can't be dead and

has been part of the squad since ME1.
But it's still favoritism, and, unfortunately, it's going to impact how people view the character.
I think the lesson to take from this is - if you're going to do a whole trilogy where decisions can carry over, try to limit the number of characters who can die before the final game as much as you can. If they had ensured that Tali and Garrus could be alive in every playthrough, for example, maybe they could have picked up some of the slack with cutscenes that always went to Liara.
And, yes, it would have been damn nice to have at least one or two of those cutscenes go to the VS, if they're on the ship, because at least one of them is always alive. I like Liara, I really do. I even kind of like the whole "unrequited love" thing you can sort of pick up from her. I think it works, and it has a place in my head canon. But there are just certain conversations that she should not have been responsible for. There are just certain times when Ash should have come to talk to Shepard, and she didn't.
I wouldn't give up the time capsule conversation with Liara for the entire world, because I think it hits just right - even with my idea about how she feels about Shepard. But it would have been nice to have Ash come up and talk to Shepard after Thessia.
