Pretty nice finding I guess - note about "Shepard lives" ending, straight from mod.

Yep. All I really wanted was a scene where Shep's LI discovered she was alive. Really all I wanted. But I guess there were far fewer of us than I realised. {smilie}

One of the goals for the Extended Cut, as part of addressing player feedback, was to provide more time with the love interest, and more opportunity for players to say goodbye to them and provide additional moments of connection between them. We did this in several ways:

Shepard can now actually say goodbye to the love interest when they are split up at the conduit run.
When Shepard sees flashbacks of important characters during the final decision, the flashbacks are now variable based on your playthrough – so your love interest can appear as one of the flashbacks, providing another moment of reflection between Shepard and that character.
A memorial scene was added, partly to show a close bond between Shepard and the love interest. The scene is variable, and if Shepard has a love interest in a given playthrough, it will be that character who places Shepard’s name on the memorial wall.
You may notice that in the “Shepard lives” ending, the love interest hesitates to place Shepard’s name on the wall, and instead looks up as though deep in thought. This is meant to suggest that the love interest is not ready to believe Shepard is dead, and the final scene reveals they are correct. As the Normandy lifts off, there is hope that the love interest and Shepard will again be together.

To summarize the LI content in the extended cut was an improvement, but you can't overlook the fact that bioware didn't want to leave their "artistic" ending with lots of room for speculation at the end. The extended cut gave me more closure for my LI, but didn't give character centralized satisfaction as it would have been possible through squad/LI reunion. That is something i will miss everytime i make another playthrough.

Especially the scene at the citadel beam was a very heart-wrenching moment for me. For Ashley and Shepard commited to each other to never get separated again shortly before the attack. Hopefully we will see them again in Mass Effect 4.

I thought the EC was pretty good. I didn't find the original ending particularly bad though as much as it was vague and unclear. The EC cleared that up a bit and I got another nice scene with Ash. Can't complain.

They did a slightly better job at explaining some gaping plot holes but created a few small ones in return or didn't even address a few. We still don't know how TIM can control people, why didn't Harbinger blast the Normandy while it sat there for several minutes, if destroy was picked how did Shepard survive, and despite being a Reaper construct why do we automatically have to believe everything it says to be true?

Overall I think the EC is a somewhat sloppy patch job on a sloppy ending. It did offer some sense of closure which I am pleased with but I'm still disappointed in Bioware because I expected better story telling from them. I've seen some ending re-writes from fellow fans that were a thousand times better than what was given to us. This won't stop me from buying future products from them, but it will certainly cause me to check out more reviews before I do so.

Same here, then I cried again at the memorial when Ashley hesitated and didn't put the name up. :crying:

I don't have time right now, but I'll share some of my thoughts after I got off work.

Safe to say, I am satisfied but apathetic as well.

Ashley's face broke my heart. I shed manly tears for the first time in the EC.
I also shed some when she hesitated to put his name on the memorial board. She knows Skipper isn't dead.

Kinda a sad goobye, and I wish I got alittle more closure at the end vis a vi: a reunion, but still pretty good.

During that last look at each other before Shep leaves, I half expected her to say she was pregnant or something.

I'm glad she didn't. Doesn't fit there AND it would be too early for her to know. Between their night together and this scene, only a couple of days had happened, with a maximum of a week or two.

The memorial scene was just perfect Ashley refuses to put up name because she know that shepard is still alive, and all the relays can be repaired.

I think at this moment you can see in her face and gestures that she is fully aware of shepard's fateful task, he must accomplish to save the galaxy, in the means that she heavily regrets to let him go but at the same time knows there is no other option. It is a very dramatic scene though. For some of us it is not easy to take an open ending in their love story as it was left. A reunion should have been an option for those who like.
But in summary: Well done bioware, mission accomplished. Strong emotions we will never forget.

Chin up, friend! In the words of the great Admiral Hackett: "It will take time, but we can rebuild everything that was destroyed. Our homes, our worlds, our fleets and defenses. All of this and more."

There's always hope...EDI 2.0 and Geth 2.0 ftw!

Edit: The way I see it, Ash/LI can be reunited with Shepard in any one of the four endings. In Control and Synthesis, Shep could be in an energy form. I had let Kasumi keep the grey box and in the Synthesis ending she was reunited with an energy manifestation of her dead lover . Why couldn't Ash have the same opportunity?

The question is...would it still be Shepard? Or would it be just a copy of Shepard?

I agree with your point of view completely. Geth are software and short of deleting software you can not get rid of the geth. WHo is to say that Quarians will not find a way to rebuild geth. And as to EDI there is a chance to recover her to. After all all her core is still in normandy. They might be able to retrieve her.

Wasn't Ash asking that same question when she reunited with Shep after Cerberus' reconstruction in ME2 and the beginning of ME3?  She seemed to reconcile herself to the fact that in the end it didn't matter and she had faith it was him.  Granted in two of the endings Shep's a super-being. Ash would definitely know he's not the same, but in my mind she would probably take what she could get.

Edit: @redbaron76
*high five* - glass half full and all that...:D

Shepard doesn't do half-measures, and neither should you! :D Destroy is about getting the job done. Imagine if Frodo had decided to keep the ring in Lord of the Rings - it is the same here IMO. Destroy offers minimal risk, regrettable but acceptable casualties, and completes the mission.

From what the catalyst said, Shepard's thoughts and presumable awareness are retained in control, but it isn't clear what form he will take. I would presume he becomes analogous to the catalyst - part of the reaper "consensus" or collective conciousness, maybe with a physical embodiment.

Synthesis however is a tricky one with from what I can see, no clear cut lines. From what I could gather, Shepard's essence is dispersed among all life forms, so I'm guessing he becomes a part of everyone. For an energy manifestation, a similar device to the grey box is probably required so I cannot see that being able to work.

The Geth and EDI are beyond salvage. AI works by using a quantum blue box that forms a personality construct. A new blue box would create a similar AI, but not the same. Replacing the blue boxes or simply rebuilding the hardware platforms would be like cloning an organic. You retain the physical properties but not the memories. Their memory would essentially be wiped. If the blue box is intact though, it is different and salvage may be possible.

Here's a scary thought...if the quarians could rebuild the Geth, then who's to say the Reapers can't be rebuilt?

If anyone is gonna rebuild the Reapers, I'd say that would Admiral Xen's thing to do.

I'd wonder what Ash's reaction would be to that...
