Just a few thoughts now that I've finished the EC.
Pretty good patch job, but still a patch job. The endings were presented better, although I still don't like the concepts behind them. But, I enjoyed it and mostly got what I wanted out of it.
Well, my main issue is still the Starchild. I figured out three ways how to replace Starchild without hurting the rest of the endings.
One idea was to replace it with a Station VI that has nothing to do with the Reapers. It's part of the Crucible/Citadel connection and has only one job: explain the three options.
Or put TIM at Starchild's position. He's already on board, he's an established character and he's one of two that most likely KNOW all three (or four) options. Shepard simply gets the explanation what option does what from TIM and stops him before he picks "Control".
Or: No choices at all. One button. And Renegade grants you CONTROL, a Neutral allignment Synthesis and Paragon Destruction while higher levels of EMS give you a better result, more lives saved and such.
Chose Destroy, naturally. It's what Shepard and crew started out to do since day one, and I followed through. After millions of years of slaughter, it had to be done. That, and I asked myself "What would Ash want me to do?" Frak the Reapers, that's what. The control ending was creepy as hell, and I don't know if she'd even recognize the entity formely known as Shepard. All the humanity was gone, sounded like just another AI. And synthesis? Who am I to play god, altering all life as we know it? Those two endings just didn't feel right to me.
As I said: Destruction is Shepard's path, Control is TIM's way and Saren stands for Synthesis. Also Anderson and Hackett support Destruction over any other way. They know, as long as the Reapers are around, there is a way they might return to their old cycle solution.
Also Destruction is the only ending where the galaxy is truly free and can create its own destiny. With Control and Synthesis, this is not really possible, even if Shepard!AI / EDI say so.
And is it just me, or did it seem like the Destruction ending got the short end of the stick? Sure, the post-war galaxy seemed to be doing ok. Rebuilding, alliances, progress and all that. But the other two endings make it seem like things were going to be sooooo much better now that the Reapers are our friends, now that hybrid beings will come together and hold hands in some utopian lovefest. Certainly seems like those were the favored endings.
Well, depends on what you like more. I rather have a realistic future than an utopian "lovefest". Besides that, Control and Synthesis have built in a high risk of turning into "crapsack worlds" one day. Destruction does have that risk too, but on a lesser extend.
Still: high-EMS Destruction Ending feels like total victory to me. Technology is still around, the Relays can be repaired, the Reapers are gone. No "dark age" awaits.
Low-EMS Destruction on the other hand is pretty much "dark age" - and a doomed galaxy.
Control and Synthesis don't have such downer endings or punish you for low EMS since they're not available then. And as soon as they're available, the damage done can be repaired much easier thanks to the Reapers. Of course they feel less dark than the Destruction Ending since in the later one the galaxy's species have to rebuild everything on their own and 'though there's no dark age, they still will have to go through a time of struggles.
Also, before I forget. I had kinda head-canoned a way around EDI and the Geth getting killed. I figured now that they were evolved into true individuals, now that they "had souls", they might have been differentiated from the Reapers. Maybe the pretty red explosion wouldn't affect them. Now, not only does the Starbrat specifically point out that they'll be killed too, but EDI's name is up on the memorial wall. Hard to head-canon around that.
But! Had a nice scene with Ash during the final charge, and her hesitation to put Shep's name on the wall, so it's hard to be too grumpy right now
Geth & EDI are a bit tricky, but somewhere in this thread I posted an idea how to get them back. And no, it's not the soul thing for them. It has to do with the fact EDI/Geth are programs with mobile / stationary platforms while Reapers are vessels for ascended souls they harvested.
The Reapers are in that field much closer to organics than synthetics in my eyes.
