And who wouldn't get a little choked up in that moment? You're watching the person you love rush off to their probable death and you can't stop them. And even if you could, you might not anyway especially if you're the kind of woman Ashley is. She and Shep both know that no matter how much they want something, this mission comes first - or everyone dies.
I really thought that last moment was perfect. There was no time for mushy overtures. Just simple truth and naked emotion.
I personally felt Ash was written really well in ME3. She may have gotten less screen time and yeah that kind of sucked if I'm being honest, but the attention to her love of family, her story about watching her dad leave with her sisters, all of the little personal touches we love about her were there. Her writer did a fine job. Stop trying to compare him to L'Etoile.
