If she is, so is everyone.

Many are, but she's moreso than, say, my Shepard.

She's not speciesist, she has a working understanding of politics and how various groups will treat each other in times of crisis. She's well aware that other species, though our allies now, will value their own before us someday.
This understanding apparently is something most ME fans lack.

ME3 can prove this wrong, in the ultimate union of all species (except the raloi and yahg, I suppose) to help save Earth.

Okay, she's a little speciesist at the start, but she changes!  It's called an arc...

That line was bugged. It was intended to be played one time when looking at a keeper. Also the Hanar and the Elcor look closer to an animal than a humanoid - regardless if they're intelligent. First impression.

But it's really funny how people reduce a fully fleshed out character to one stupid line.

@Xilizhra
Best idea is to drop the topic. We Ash fans don't invade the Tali thread and try to convince ppl Tali is a racist. ;)
By the way, I believe half of the guys who hate Ashley hate Kimberly since she's black. Which makes the Ash-haters to racists. REAL LIFE racists ...

You know it always comes back to that line.

It's her first time in contact with aliens, and she can't tell the difference between the aliens and the animals, but that alone makes her a vile racist or a speciesist?

The Keepers ARE like the animals. Well they sure as hell aren't treating like 'people; anyway.

Thanks, I didn't know it was bugged.  It would make sense.  In fact, there's a good chance I only heard it the once, but because of everyone's complaining, it stuck out to me.  Because I hadn't recalled it before...

@dahellraider
Everybody from Russian side of my family served in army since Russia was Imperal. :) And they served even at times of WW1 and WW2. :) Well, hard to find family where nobody served. But our army is not like yours. Sergeants may do whatever they want with private soldiers. Is it called " hazing", right? And we still have military draft. But anyway, my father hates all this military things. :)

And I wanted to say, that Ash is not my type. :) Too cool, too badass. :)

@Krukow nah, that line is randomly played when you click Ashley on the Citadel.
However, it was meant to be played one-time when a keeper was around.

No, Ashley is completely right.  Each species abandons the others to their own fate and you're only able to unite them by solving ALL OF THEIR PROBLEMS FIRST.  Seriously, Wrex was fine with letting the universe die unless he got his cure, and the quarians couldn't pick a better time to start their war with the Geth?

Ash was right on this one...

I just watched an interview with Kimberly Brooks (I think its pretty old) and apparently according to her Ash dose Yoga

I watched that too, and I think the "Ash does yoga" wasn't meant to be literal. The interviewer was trying to sidestep a spoiler by saying "She's in a higher place" and Kimberly Brooks was just teasing that meant Ash is "enlightened."

It's cool that she was psyched to play it, since I've seen ME voice interviews where Jennifer Hale doesn't game at all even though she's probably voiced hundreds of games. Ali Hillis is funny though and seems to genuinely like her character and the ME universe.

Well yes, the "She does yoga now" comment was definitely a joke, but still fun to imagine. :D

And from what can ascertain from interviews she actually hasn't played the games because she's just too darn busy (seriously her voice is like everywhere, especially in promos).  She did say in the interview we did "I would play as female, and I would want to have a whole thing with Kaidan. I would love that very much."  Hehehe.

I have actually not met her but went back and forth through email.  She seems lovely and I'd love to chat with her in person.

Yeah I did feel that wasn't meant to be taken literaly but I can still see her doing yoga B)

It's not that I hate Ashley by any means, I'm just intrigued by how many people vehemently argue against a relatively minor character flaw. I certainly don't deny that Liara has a certain obsessive streak.

Remember when the Asari completely backed out and abandoned everyone else until their own world got invaded?

Well, because ppl tend to mistake "distrustfulness" with "racism"?

Just an idea. Ashley is distrustful. Actually, that flaw annoyed me in ME3 a bit since it was the only fully fleshed out trait of her character while the more pleasant parts got ignored like her love for poetry.

Ashley doesn't trust aliens, or Cerberus, or any guy she doesn't know. Everyone has to prove she or he is trustworthy in Ashley's eyes. That's all. In ME1, Ash rarely trusts anyone till the end, but she does in ME3 - well, except Shepard for a large part of the game.

It's because it's a misunderstanding of the flaw.  She doesn't hate aliens because they're different, she distrusts them for political reasons.  Which is understandable, especially given her family history.

But everyone just wants to take the dumb way out and call it racism, instead of trying to understand a dynamic character who's beliefs would very possibly mirror our own if we were in that situation.

Then we would be speciesist. I accept that. In fact, I accept the fact that I'd probably be an enthusiastic **** if I grew up in Germany during the right period for it. We are indeed creatures largely of our environments.

Though "I'm no fan of aliens."

No, she doesn't distrust aliens, she distrusts their leaders - she distrusts HER leaders. She distrusts people she doesn't know -that's her flaw. It's a smart one to have if your a career soldier.

Yea, but how often does Liara get trolled exclusively because of her obsessive streak? Liara's obsessiveness can at least be interpreted as endearing and geeky, since we're all geeks here in some way. But it's harder to spin Ash's mistrust as similarly endearing and it can be easier to write her off as just "that alien hater."

Liara gets trolled a lot, believe me. And I promise I'm not trying to troll. I like Ashley; it's why I saved her (well, that and the fact that I wanted to rescue the salarian team on the AA tower).

Indeed. It's not a serious case of speciesism at all, just a small amount for the sake of verisimilitude.

Well - or you live in USA, there you have some issues with Mexicans. In Germany we have Turks. Guess every nation has more or less welcome people, so to speak. And yes, it's a society thing.

In ME, racism is more or less a standard. For a species that does encourage snu-snu with other races, the Asari are quite a bunch of racists. The Quarians kinda top that standard, 'though their hatred is focused on the Geth only. In fact, it totally makes them blind for the truth: they started the war, the Geth never wanted to fight.

Also topping racists: Batarians. The humans vary a lot from "totally n*zi-like racists" to "Star-Trek-open-minded". Ashley is somewhere between both extremes and most of her "racism" is based on her distrustful PoV. It can, however, turn to full blown racism if not dealt with. Every enmity starts with some kind of distrust.
