Asari seem to have more issues with "pureblood" members of their own kind than other species. The only one I know of who was outright speciesist, Erinya, wasn't even really that so much as just deeply hurt that everyone she loved had been killed by aliens.

Then we would be speciesist. I accept that. In fact, I accept the fact that I'd probably be an enthusiastic **** if I grew up in Germany during the right period for it. We are indeed creatures largely of our environments.

Though "I'm no fan of aliens."

Well - or you live in USA, there you have some issues with Mexicans. In Germany we have Turks. Guess every nation has more or less welcome people, so to speak. And yes, it's a society thing.

In ME, racism is more or less a standard. For a species that does encourage snu-snu with other races, the Asari are quite a bunch of racists. The Quarians kinda top that standard, 'though their hatred is focused on the Geth only. In fact, it totally makes them blind for the truth: they started the war, the Geth never wanted to fight.

Also topping racists: Batarians. The humans vary a lot from "totally n*zi-like racists" to "Star-Trek-open-minded". Ashley is somewhere between both extremes and most of her "racism" is based on her distrustful PoV. It can, however, turn to full blown racism if not dealt with. Every enmity starts with some kind of distrust.

But what Ashley's expressing isn't racism.  Racism, or speciesism, would be a distrust or hatred because they are a different species.  Just because they're different.
Ashley's distrust comes from the fact that they're from different political affiliation.
To use the above reference, it's not hating mexicans because they're mexican, it would be not trusting chinese nationals because you fear they would act in a way that would benefit their country at the expense of your own.  And when you're a soldier, serving on a military ship, that is a perfectly legit fear to have.  In fact, it would be negligent to not have it.

And Tali totally stole technology from the Normandy, so there!Posted Image

@Xilizhra maybe I see the Asari in a darker light than you do. They do have some really nasty traits for a race of "space elves". Let's say, I'm not the biggest Asari fan - I like the Krogans or Turians much more. ;)
When it comes to sexy stuff, I definitely prefer human women over Asari. *g*

Oh for god's sake. "Ashley's racism" seriously? She's distrusts the alien leaders, and distrusts her own too. She's suspicious and pessimistic, but that doesn't make her a racist.

"I'm not counting on anybody being on our side, not anymore." - Ash.

It's not racism, nor would it develop into racism either. Those "aliens" Tali and Garrus ect - They were all strangers, but Ash eventually learned to trust and care for them (no matter what) as soon as they proved themselves and earned their shirts.

Now, I've go to go!

Ashley is a crynic. She's ok with individual members of different species (she gets along with Garrus, Tali, Wrex and Liara).

She's just suspicious of their political leadership.

So you like brutal conquerors/open imperialists more than the asari? At least if we're going to be judging a species in such broad strokes to begin with.

Well to be honest almost every race in the ME series has some troubling dark secrets..humans included. Ashley's concern is that their dark secret is that they'll dump humanity when push comes to shove

- Asari: hid advanced prothean technology from the rest of the galaxy and had to have the Reapers land on their front step in order to contribute to the Macgufin that would destroy the Reapers. Are quite happy to let Earth burn while they defend their own space (Ash called it!)

- Turians: opened fire on an unarmed human civilian convoy (Relay 314). Are really reluctant to pay reparations until you save their asses.

- Quarians: decided that now would be a good time to invade the heavily fortified geth space...in the middle of an intergalactic war for survival. Decided to create AI's in contrvention of Citadel laws.

- Humans: host to at least two separate human supremacy organizations. Have very few compuctions with investigating AI processes.

- Salarians: Have an almost disturbing tendency to mess with a species mental and development process...when they're not ready, see Krogan and Yahg. See themselves as the guardians of galactic security..even when they're the ones resposible for almost wrecking it.

- Krogans: Are a nilhisitc species whom have to be dragged into a "modern" style of thinking. Under Wreav, they're probably gonna start another war. Wrex is perfectly willing to let the galaxy burn unless he gets the cure first

Well, at least you know with whom you're dealing with. I really like honest people.

Deal with a Krogan and you can expect it's going rough.
Deal with a Turian, he rarely ever lies. Dunno why, but as long as you face a Turian with face paint, you get what you ask for.
Deal with an Asari - and you can expect everything, from hot sex up to a knife in your spine.

# edit

Seriously: the Asari look pretty and perfect at first, but they do have a -really- dark part as well. I can't overlook that part, easy as it is.

A tiny portion of the asari government hid it. The vast, vast majority of their population had no idea. Also, they changed their minds eventually.

- Quarians: decided that now would be a good time to invade the heavily fortified geth space...in the middle of an intergalactic war for survival. Decided to create AI's in contrvention of Citadel laws.

Actually, they only created VIs deliberately. Actual intelligence was an accident.

Every species has darker individuals. I consider asari to have the least, or at least the least institutional darkness.

Sure. Mankind has some dark spots as well, a blood-tainted history ... well, ask Salarians, ask Krogans, ask Turians ... they do have it too.

However, the Asari - I'd say, the way how they treat the Ardat-Yakshi and the entire pure-blood stuff reminds me of a dark 12-year-age of my own nation. It -really- feels that low.
Also Illium - it's pretty much the mirror of Asari society. Everything is allowed - as long as you have a licence. Drug dealing, violence, sex, sex, sex ... you name it. It's kinda funny most Asari spent their youth being criminals, mercenaries and as strippers. For such ascended race like the Asari, they have pretty low standards. Guess some dude designed them as full hedonist race. Hedonism, 'though good in small doses, is quite dangerous if it's all that matters.

That's why. Well, this is the Ashley thread, so I won't go any further here. :P

Okay, this is getting out of hand now.

Kim's laugh is what I imagine Ashley's giggle being like. :)

Also... some youtube comments... YOU PEOPLE!? What will it seriously take to prove that Ashley isn't racist. "Tali's like a little sister to me." are so many of these gamers thick as pig sh*t or what?

She is speciesist, albeit mildly and capable of getting past it for personal bonds.

She's not speciesist, she has a working understanding of politics and how various groups will treat each other in times of crisis.  She's well aware that other species, though our allies now, will value their own before us someday.
This understanding apparently is something most ME fans lack.

"I can't tell the animals from the aliens"
Okay, she's a little speciesist at the start, but she changes!  It's called an arc...

She literally can't tell though. She's NEVER served with aliens, or been around them. It is a factual statement.

Problematic, to be sure, although far from unique to them.

I'm pretty sure it's not "most," that's just what we saw a lot of in ME2. They have several universities and the like. Also, Illium=Noveria; calling it particularly representative of asari culture is like calling human culture all about corporate shenanigans and breeding illegal enslaved private armies.

She literally can't tell though. She's NEVER served with aliens, or been around them. It is a factual statement.

I'm reminded of George Bush not knowing there were three main groups of people living in Iraq before invading it.

Krogans are cool because they are clansmen that eat, sleep, fight & f*ck. In other words... Space Vikings!

Shepard: I talked to a Prothean VI on Ilos!!
Anderson: But you're the only one, it won't talk now. If only there was another one somewhere. Then we could prove your claims, and the galaxy could get ready for the reapers and not have to rely on space magic!
Asari Councilor: (Whistles)(Walks away quietly)

Yeah, the asari get no pass on this one.

Yeah, the asari get no pass on this one.

Attack Tevos and whatever tiny matriarchal clique knew about that if you will, but the "asari" as a species had no clue about it.

Ryncol = Vodka? ^_^

Well, tbh, I -really- like the Turians, my favorite species so far. Salarians are great too, but I dislike their ways how to fight a war (strike first, declare later).

Guess I do have a thing for military races.

Vodka? :D It's for babies. XD Samogon - that's real Ryncol! :) But yes, Vodka is more common and not so bad for health as Samogon.

And I like Turians because of their philosophy. This is admirable philosophy.
But as we can see Ash don't feels warm feelings to Turians. :)
