After ME3... Hmmm...
I used to have a very solid head canon, but I'm not so sure anymore with the EC and the upcoming DLC.
I know they're together for at least a year before they go back into active duty. In my head canon, a new threat emerges, and they're both called on to deal with it.
Shepard still eventually ends up working for Councilor Osoba, and then becoming the human Councilor himself. That doesn't change. I haven't fully worked out the "new threat," but it's something that will take decades, if not centuries, to fight, and it won't all be done through military force. So diplomacy and rebuilding is very important. I'd like to think that what they're dealing with involves the whole "dying stars" thing, but I'm waiting to see if any DLC deals with that before I make it "official" head canon.
Ash and Edwin Shepard have at least three kids. The first, Kaidan, ends up kind of screwed up, because he can't deal with the pressure of being a "Williams-Shepard," or, for that matter, the pressure of living up to the legacy of who he's named after, once he finds out about that story. Tries the military, ends up washing out, then ends up in jail. Edwin Shepard has a long rope, but this kid reaches the end of it, and they pretty much never talk again. Kaidan eventually ends up in the Terminus Systems.
The other two kids are a little better off. Hannah more or less becomes career military, although she gets a law degree and ends up serving as a military lawyer. David is never really interested in the military. He becomes an expert in agricultural science, and actually does a ton of work with the krogan, helping them learn how to ensure they have an adequate food supply. Wrex finds the whole situation amusing - an entirely new Shepard is helping the krogan all over again.
