I can't tell if the article indicates that "let her/him go" is directed AT Ash or Kaidan or ABOUT them. Seems like from the way it's written Shepard is talking TO them.
I understood it the same way. As if Kaidan and Ashley are holding someone hostage and Shep is directing his "Let him/her go" AT A/K.

I was confused about that, too.
"in order to communicate every possible state of alarm with which Shepard would react to A/K"
had me thinking, they were saying the line to the VS, but not necessarily, because it could be that they react to their walking away and talking to someone else, as well.
Then I also had the same thought as ratzerman and I decided to go with that.
The whole thing is rather inconclusive, no need to go crazy over it, that's why I chose to joke about it in the first place.

Here's the quote from the New York article..."Shepard, however, is forced to save one character and sacrifice the other, and, in Mass Effect 2, whichever of the two was saved reappears to remonstrate with him or her. The result of the conversation, which can play out in various ways, determines how the character of A/K will interact with Shepard in Mass Effect 3."
"The new scene involves a tense exchange between Shepard and A/K. The first line of the scene was simple enough: 'Let her/him go.' But Hale had to say it multiple times, with different emphases, in order to communicate every possible state of alarm with which Shepard would react to A/K. Hale did her customary four takes of "Let her go," which she followed with four takes of "Let him go." Two were growly, hateful takes, and two were hard, urgent takes. As she finished, Hale flexed as if to indicate a deepening transformation into Shepard. She was then told that her lines had to be recorded as though she were running.
Hale's next line was 'No!' Livingstone turned to Walters and asked, 'Is this a panicked 'No' or an angry 'No?''
'It's a' - Walters hesitated - 'futile 'No.''
Hale nodded. 'No!' she said, stirringly, a moment later.
'More compassion,' Livingstone said. 'Less heightened.'
Hale tried again, and her 'No!' seemed to emerge from some alarmed, half-strangled place in her throat."

Not so fast!
We did react with similar leeriness to grimdark!Liara, and that ended up turning out alright (so far).
We shouldn't resort to spaghetti westerns until a dorky Casey Hudson interview a couple of months before release hints that Ash and Kaidan have both turned into Evil Communist Space Templars and croons about how much cooler and deeper the change makes them as characters.

I mean they've already hinted at former friends becoming enemies and big show downs possibly with members of your squad. Then there's the whole easily used indoctrination excuse for anything. I sincerely doubt they're making any of these possibilities for squadmates who could be dead, therefore the entirety of the ME2 squad is out of the picture.

And I read the article in question, and I have my own little theory it says she says each line "two times" wheter it was simply because Hale couldn't do it the first time, OR because the other one's would be used for the Charm/Intimidate options and the "No" is if you use one of the non-persusive options. I'm probably miles out, no harm in speculation right?

I was shocked at first, but I'm not getting crazy over it...It would be plain cruel to first makes us choose between Ash and Kaidan only to kill the other one aswell. This could also be an outcome of the game when you weren't quick enough essembling an army against the reapers, like a punishment.
Pehaps someone could tweet casey or someone? It's worth a shot.

But yeah I'm guessing every squad member can die...so that would include the VS, if it is just as hard to get squaddies killed as in ME2 than I wouldn't worry.

Same, if it's like ME2 then we've got nothing to worry about, but they could introduce a "Choice" system between squaddies and such.

I'd be fine with that... as that guarantees Ash to never die in any of my playthroughs rather than having a "she always gets captured/dies scenario"
Seriously, if that happened. I'd only play the game the once. I wouldn't wanna ever go through that kind of crap again.
