Lol we were. It was a sweet scene especially when he said "I Love you." But honestly, I don't about your guys' headcanon's, but that wasn't the first time my shepard said I love you to Ash. 

The first time was Eden Prime where they met.  I have an overly attached Shepard. (Just kidding)

You know, I could see it being the first time he said it.  I'm sure she said it in the month before ME2 we didn't see (she said we had to come back to hear it), but I could see Shep not reciprocating.

Also, as for your head canon TL, I bet this is how it goes:

Shepard: Ash, I love you.
Ash: Not in the middle of a fight!

......if it were up to me I would have had my Shepard tell her he loved her on Horizon.....and then bring her in for a loving passionate kiss.....
Although that might be renegade, so gently bring her in...

I could see my Shepard being a little distracted lookin' at Ashley...work out.
I mean, they put a poker table that you can't use, so why not a small gym?
They probably could have fit it at a small corner in engineering if they wanted to...

I could see that. I bet there is a gym somewhere (Sheploo, Ash, and the rest are in too good of shape not to work out). They probably just didn't put it in becaues we wouldn't be able to do anything in that room, and nobody could live in there (like ash lives in a viewport room. Sigh...)

I think there was a small gym on the Normandy. And Shepard definitely gets distracted whenever Ashley is around. She is a weak spot for him.

You beat up poor vega?  But he has a learning disability!  Don't beat up poor, mentally challenged Vega!

Aw well, at least he learned a lesson not to mess with Liam Shepard. I wont hesitate to set his mental ass down when I need to. And the only thing my Shepard is crazy about, is Ashley!
I'm on Tuchanka, Genophage mission right now. I can't wait to bring Ashley on the Turian bomb one.
