Characters, well done characters, are to be treated as real people. That's the point of fiction, to tell stories that are relate able in some way. People like characters they can identitfy with. We're all here because in some way we identify with Ashley Williams. We identify with her toughness because life is hard and you need to be tough to move forward when things aren't going your way. Some identify with her love of poetry, some identify with her because of her military service and dedication to the systems alliance. Some identify with her love of her family because that's what means to us in our lives.Made Nightwing wrote...
Kelly is a video game character, you should not be taking her advice. And more to the point, she is a character that is mush in most people's playthroughs because no one can stomach someone that cheerful. Turns out, your sexuality is part of your character. And by the timeframe of ME3, humanity has known that for about two centuries. I swear, if I hear that idiotic line one more time...
Though one thing you won't hear anyone say is that they identify with her because she's straight ie "She's such a good straight role model". Sexuality, like anything about a person, is only as powerful as you make it. Since it's the societal norm (everywhere but tumblr) you're straight until proven otherwise. There's no "straight" qualities to a person like "oh they're straight because they watch this show, or play that game, or read that book." There's only that for homosexuality or bisexuality because they aren't treated as normal by society so they must be given the power to match heterosexuality. One thing Mass Effect did right was portray (most) non-hetero relationships as if they wera normal thing, because is the 2180's they are.
No one bats an eyelash at Shepard if she chooses to pursue a romance with Liara, Allers, Samara, Kelly, or Traynor. Nor do they if they choose to pursue Cortez or Kaidan, the same way they don't for Mshep going after Ashley, Miranda, Tali, Allers, Jack, or Liara, and how Fshep can go after, Kaidan, Jacob, Thane, or Garrus. (the descrepancy between LI's should be obvious here.) It's normal because Shepard is happy (in most cases). She or he is still a badass soldier that saves the galaxy multiple times no matter who is in their bed with them if anyone's in there at all. (shout out to the single Shepards) No one cares who you bed and that's how it should be already. Instead post like these need to be made because people DO care who you love when it's none of their damn business. ashley doesn't care if you romance her or not. She still recognizes your talent and is your friend if you aren't shacking up with her, just like any person worth any merit should act, and that's how I identify with her.
Right, since the rest of your post is irrelevant, I better tell you this. No. They. Are. Not. They are the brainchild of somebody who needed to make some money by writing a character for a story. Mass Effect is not a real universe. You cannot pick up your bags and move there. If you were to jump forward to the 2180s, the world would still look exactly the same as it does today, just a little bit more crowded. Get up and go and live in real life.
