I like that armor on Ash, except I toggle the headgear off. The visor thing bugs me.

That headgear isn't too bad. Though its out of place when she wears it on the dreadnought mission that requires a helmet and she doesn't have anything covering her nose and mouth.

For "realism" sake, Ashley Williams' Alliance Navy S1 armor is the one I used the most. I also have all the characters wearing helmets except for certain cutscenes. I understand it's cool to see the characters' faces, but my rationale is that wearing a helmet is common sense (and mandatory) in a combat zone.

On a different note, Chris L'Étoile has got a prominent role in a new game:    http://www.polygon.c...a-chris-letoile

In case you don't know who Chris L'Étoile is, he wrote Ash in ME 1 and 2, he was responsible for 99% of Noveria in ME 1. Specifically in ME 2, he handled Thane, EDI, Legion and the depth given to the Geth collective and all AI's in ME2. He was good friends with Patrick Weekes, one of the few writers who was pat of the team throughout the whole trilogy. As a joke, I believe Weekes named one of the Sur'Kesh salarians "Lieutenant Tolan" after him (he only appears if Kirrahe died in ME 1    http://masseffect.wi...tenant_Tolan).

Interesting, I thought the writer for Ash left after ME1 but apparently he was around for ME 2. Makes me wonder why he wrote that train wreck encounter in ME2 then.

Probably forced by the higher ups.

With the exception of maybe Wrex, all the cameos for ME1 companion characters that weren't on the ME2 squad were disappointing. I think it was mostly a case of just not having enough dialogue to make those cameos interesting. I'd give Ashley's writer a pass on that, especially since Liara and Kaidan (the other two potential LIs) also got their romances railroaded into splitsville. It seems like it was one of those decisions made at the top of the chain.

I misread this, and first thought you said that he has a "prominent role in the new game." Meaning the next Mass Effect game. Hopes raised, then dashed.

I really wish he had stuck around at least long enough to help with ME3. I always wonder how things would have been different, both with Ash and the game in general.

I wonder how different the trilogy would be had all writers stayed for the whole trilogy

I'll preface this by saying that I continue to think that ME2 and 3 were very good, but I do think that if all the original writers had stayed they would have been better. There are a few parts of the last two games that were slightly inconsistent with the canon established in ME1, and I think that would have been less likely to happen. I think Ash in ME3 would have been much more consistent with Ash in ME1 (although to be fair, Ash is a complicated character so I think the writer who took over in 3 had a tough job and probably did the best he could - and while what was there wasn't perfect, it was still for the most part fairly decent) and I think that the botched ending in ME3 may very well not have happened. There is a chance that the fans would have had objections to any ending, but I like to think that Star Brat and the parts of the ending that I feel were thematically inconsistent wouldn't have been there, or would have been significantly different.

I don't know if it would have played a role in the Reaper's motivation, but I also like to think the dark matter plot line would have been tied up. Maybe we wouldn't have had terminator kid at the end of ME2, either. Honestly, that end boss makes me wince almost as much as Star Brat. It's just a little more forgivable since the rest of ME2 is so awesome.

I agree with what ya'll are saying. It would have been different if the original writers stayed all the way through; instead of a few leaving in the middle of ME2. (My understanding for what happened with Chris L'Etoile and one or two others.)

But we still have the original, and ME2/3 are still very good games even with some of the inconsistentcies.

What I think would have been helpful, too, is if they had a clear idea from ME1 where they wanted to go with the story and the characters throughout the trilogy.

The problem is, having that sort of thing laid out is, as I understand it, inconsistent with the realities of game development. Not only do writers come and go (including lead writers), but the story needs to be able to shift and change to meet the needs of gameplay, technology, costs, time constraints, etc. Making a trilogy of games isn't going to be the same as writing three novels or even writing three movies, which I think may be why it will always be challenging to do the sort of thing Mass Effect tried to pull off. I still respect Bioware for trying, though, and I actually think ME left a lot of good lessons for future franchises that, hopefully, will try to do something similar.

I'm assuming you're trolling Hello!I'mTheDoctor.

Anyway, I started a new playthrough, not sure yet if I'll complete it but I was thinking of romancing someone else. I've always found it a bit weird not romancing Ashley. Anyone romanced other squad members? Was it weird? Did you always let her survive Virmire?

Nice pictures von uber, especially the top one.

Nope, just stating a healthy opinion.

I'll give you my favorite line of hers too!

I only romanced Ashley twice. Once for the trophy in ME1 and I did a trilogy romance with her. Ashley has survived most of my ME1 playthrough.

I also have romanced Miranda.

I play as femshep who only romances Samantha.

Ash is ok, she just got cr@pped on in ME3.

Whenever I play through now she dies on Virmire, largely because Kaidan's ME3 content is that much better IMO.

My maleshep has only romanced Ashley in ME1 and Miranda in ME2 & 3.  I find the friendship dialogue for Ash better than the romance version for my maleshep.  Ashley lacked dialogue in ME3 after the coup.  She was pretty quiet after the coup which kind of sucked even though I took her on almost every mission.  In a way, my maleshep couldn't be with Ashley after her constant mistrust of him for working with Cerberus.   I did like the mars dialogue but having to explain himself again during the coup... I let Shepard or Ashley shoot Udina.  My maleshep never hated Ash enough to kill her or send her off to Hackett.

I have only killed Ashley once for my FemShep playthrough but I haven't even finished ME2 for FemShep to see Kaidan in ME3. Maybe someday. My FemShep would probably have romanced Garrus or Thane in ME2. :)  FemShep romancing Jacob was just creepy like she was in heat or something. ROFL. Glad FemShep got to punch him in ME3 Citadel DLC.

Admittedly so, especially since I wasn't done crapping on her in ME3 myself.

In my fanfic/headcanon, Ashley basically has fallen in love with the idealized version of Shepard touted by the alliance propaganda (which she so joyously consumes), and can't reconcile the image of Shepard with the real man (a pro-Cerberus guy with differences with her in just about everything). It comes to a point where Ashley gets a task by the alliance to take over the Normandy from Shepard (right when a Reaper strike force of indoctrinated/huskified agents attacks with the intent to assassinate or indoctrinate Shepard). A 3 way fight ensues between Shepard and the few members of his crew who remain loyal to him personally (and Miranda), Ashley and the alliance crew, and the Reapers. The Reapers are fought off, the alliance crew is slaughtered horribly (and I do mean, I go all out with how gory their deaths are), and Ashley finally snaps and tries to kill Shepard, giving him her damnation to hell before Miranda levels her Paladin at her head and blows her brains out.

I'm about to start my second ever playthrough of the Citadel this weekend. I'm actually looking forward to it. I am disappointed by the date scene and by the fact that she can't be invited to the apartment. But I actually think she has some good dialogue during the main mission. Plus, I enjoy doing the Arena with her, and I just head canon them spending some quality time together in the apartment. I figure it's a rather extended leave while the Normandy is repaired, and while the Alliance puts the last touches on the Crucible and the allies gather their fleets together for the final push. So, at last, they have some time (a few weeks, maybe?) just to be a normal couple.

Deviant Art has some really good Ash stuff, but, unfortunately, some of what you have to wade through to get to it is... disturbing.

I actually never done the games part of the Citadel dlc, so that scene isn't familiar. Might have to try it. I have started a new character with the intention of romancing someone else and a new class, as I've always played soldier.
It's very hard to not go for Ash I notice. Let alone letting her die at Virmire.
Shep and Ash are just a perfect fit, of course there is some personal preference there, but still. I could see a romance with Miranda, but only if Ash weren't in the game at all. I have some thinking to do.

I briefly tried the Miranda romance. I ended up restoring the game to a save before I got involved with her. It just doesn't feel "right" for my Shepard. If he wasn't interested in someone else, they're compatible just enough that I could seem them possibly getting together for a short time, just so they have someone, but I don't think it would ever go anywhere.

Out of all the other LIs, the only two I could see my Shepard ever getting involved with are Kelly and maybe (don't judge) Allers.

Kelly, despite how different she is from Ash, would work for a long term relationship with my Shepard in a different way than Ash does. I'm actually not sure I could stand to be around them, though. Where Ash and Shepard even each other out a bit, I think my (mostly paragon) Shepard and Kelly would just reinforce the dominant positive and cheerful qualities they both have, and they'd become one of those almost sickeningly cheerful couples you see sometimes.

Allers would probably just be a short lived fling, again that would only happen if he wasn't interested in someone else. And it would probably be even shorter than anything with Miranda.
