I have two headcanon Shepards. They're very simliar, harboring a lot of demons. They try to be calm and rational, and are usually successful. Usually. The entire discography of Isis would fit for either, though if pressed for a single song, I'd probably go with
"So Did We" off of Panopticon. I like the dichotomy of heavy and soft(er). It reminds me of the dichotomy between inner turmoil (and occasional outbursts) and outer calm.
Thomas Spencer Shepard: Colonist/War Hero. Thomas is the more damaged of the two. He lost his girlfriend and family on Mindoir. He rebuilt himself after enlisting, and was on Elysium with his new girlfriend visiting her family when the Blitz hit. She was killed during the holding action. Then he started getting close to Ash, and had to leave her behind on Virmire. He moved on from that by shutting the world out, and focusing on the mission.
"Blood and Thunder" by Mastodon describe him fairly well. Eventually he falls for Tali.
Michael Meade Shepard: Spacer/Sole Survivor. Not nearly as troubled as Thomas, he still bears a lot of survivor's guilt over Akuze, his first mission as a leader. Born and bred serviceman, he was taught that the leader is "first in, last out," and he feels he failed his squad, his family, and the service. He pushes himself harder to atone. Fell in love with Ash, and he's still trying to get a handle on what happened on Horizon. Dealing with it using alcohol ended poorly.
For romances, I like
"Threads" by This Will Destroy You.
Also, for fun: for anyone doing the renegade quickie with Jack:
"Sex and Violence" by The Exploited
