Nothing's going to happen to the VS that isn't based on choices. It's not a mandatory human squaddie who made it passed Virmire in ME1 dies" Hell Tali and garrus can die and they're two of the most popular characters. Hell the PROTAGONIST can die. It's no big deal.

Yeah, nothing tragic that happens in the ME universe(besides the stuff that was before the games) is by chance and long odds.  it all boils down to Sheps decisions.
Adequetly put, the problem is choice.

You haven't played ME3 though.... they may well have scripted squad mate deaths.

Jenkins... Virmire ... those ring a bell?

Anyway, that's not what I'm worried about, I'm pretty positive that any squadmate that can die will have a way to save them... emphasis being on "squadmate" ... if Ash is made to turn against Shepard... then she's no longer a squadmate and may not be able to be saved.

She won't turn on Shepard. I get everyone's all "Horizon was bad!" but what you miss is that is was plot armor. Everyone that stepped foot on the Normandy SR-2 to stay was killable. Guess who didn't step on the Normandy SR-2 to stay? Liara and the VS. Guess what they aren't killable in ME2. They were preserved from the variables of "who's alive and who's not?" to that they are guarenteed for ME3 and their amazing Roles.Posted Image

I got an Ash fic if anyone's interested. It takes place after Shepard has been arrested. Please keep in mind that this is the first story I've written so it's probably not very good.

Ash stepped onto the Normandy's elevator (yes it looks like we're back to the elevator again) she was dreading having to go through Shepard's cabin. The Shepard she knew wouldn't blow up a mass relay, would work with geth no matter what armour it had strapped to its chest, and wouldn't let her believe he was dead, no matter what his mission was.  Who knows what Cerberus did to him? He could be a clone, or he could be brainwashed. She had to believe that this wasn't Shepard, that he really was dead just to get through each day.
Her thoughts were interrupted by the elevator door suddenly opening. She stepped out slowly, wishing she was anywhere but there. The cabin door opened she walked in. She walked toward the bed examining each object around the room. There was a small silver sphere on the table that seemed to changed size when she got close. She saw his dog tags on the nightstand next to his bed, his old helmet on a desk, badly damaged. Bad memories came rushing back. Ash turned around suddenly, no longer able to stand it and went to his private terminal. As she approached a picture appeared. Of her.
She did her best to ignore it as she sat down. She went through archived messages, pretending not to see the one she sent him. When she was done she noticed that Shepard had saved dozens of drafts. When she investigated, she saw that they were all addressed to her.
The first was an angry letter that was made just after Horizon. She skimmed through the next dozen. One letter was an apology, another was an explanation. One even had some bad poetry in it. She skipped to the most recent, which surprisingly was made the day he was arrested. All it said was
I love you.
As Ash read the words, she looked back at her picture. A single tear rolled down her cheek. It was a tear of sadness, of losing Shepard, of Horizon, and of the unfair treatment she gave him. But it was also a tear of happiness and joy. Shepard was back, and he was hers. She wiped the tear from her face, got up, and after taking one last look at her picture on the desk,  she left. She was going to the brig to have a nice long chat with the man she respected, admired, and yes loved.

That was to ensure that they would make it to ME3... that portion is over.

If they are important to the story they will either not be a squadmate the whole game and go off and do something heroic... (b/c really, how important is a squadmate?) ... OR they will be something used as part of the plot against Shepard. I don't see them having both Liara and Ash doing something heroic or both doing something evil.

I'd say they have more plot armor than most of the others. Since you know, one or the other is already dead for sure.

Liara is the shadow broker. She's pretty much at the peak of her potential now as the most powerful individual in the Milky way so now Ashley has to reach her potential as a Spectre.

I can see Ashley taking control of the Alliance forces during Mass Effect 3. Shepard takes control of the Spectres and C-sec, Garrus leads Turians along with that purple-armoured guy we see in the screenshots, Samara takes control of the Justicar Order and Asari, Mordin and Kirrahe in charge of Salarain and so on. Its gonna be F*CKING epic!

Sometimes plot holes happen, this is a fact of life. And frankly I'd rather the largely unimportant and unnoticed plot thread about how the VS escaped Horizon be left unanswered and left in the dust and forgotten then I would it suddenly becoming a HUGE and MAJOR thing that rises up and reveals that the VS was indoctrinated, thus ruining the actual important part of the plot that I've waited almost six years to see the resolution of.
Seriously if after six years of emotional investment waiting to see how Ashley and Shepard's love story comes to a conclusion, Bioware decide to just end it with a 'she's indoctrinated/a traitor, guess you have to kill her now. Should have gone with Liara' plot twist on me I will snap the disk in half, and dedicate the rest of my life to bloodily murdering the Bioware team and everyone who ever helped put that stupid idea in their heads.

My take? Ashley woke up and got free from the freezing process and the reason the Collectors did not descend upon her was because Shepard, the one that they were doing all of this for, was now on Horizon. So with the actual target that they were trying to kill, remember Ashley was essentially just bait, in sight and shooting and killing them at a fast rate they probably decided to just cut out the middle man.

Otherwise it really is not important enough to cheapen the actual story with stupid 'brainwashing' plot twists. At least in my opinion.
But if it must happen, if Bioware must revert to a B movie stupid M Night Shyamalan-if-he-was-stoned style plot twist at least make the VS death be optional, don't make that forced. Give me the option to save Ashley's life and free her from the combination of Reaper technology and bad writing that made her this way, don't punish the VS fans further by making the long road that I've walked for (again) six years end with me having to kill Ashley (or Ashley dying) with no other options to prevent it.
That's just f*cking cruel.

Might wanna get use to it... it's Bioware's favorite "plot device" in the series. Why did this happen? Indoctrination.... why is so an so doing this? Indoctrination... How th- INDOCTRINATION! :wizard:

Also, Cerberus in ME3... could very well be indoctrinated. I see them using it a lot in ME3. :pinched:

I think every death will be optional. The only deatht hat isn't is Shepard's in ME2 so that the time skip Happens. There are very few mandatory thingsin Mass Effect in General. Hell the romances are optional and the game can be completed without them but we love them alot. Bioware doesn't not alienate fans and if anyone's gonna die, They're going out with an em-effing bang, like, take a Reaper with them or something.

I liked this ... especially the part about Shepard trying to write a response back. And yes, I could see Shepard writing bad poetry. That would have made Ash smile.
