Yeah I suppose Shepard will only be able to take so much more, before he collapses, but Ashley and also the rest of his squad will do all they can to pull him through and nnow that Ash is also a Spectre maybe she can take some of the weight of his shoulders when he can't take anymore.

Ash - please keep our commander in one piece. The galaxy needs him. And you need him as well. So if everything is falling apart, be with him. You're the one giving him what he needs most: a beacon in the cataclysm. When all things end, you need to be with Shepard.

So my friend an I are IM'ing while he plays Mass Effect for the first time. He's talking to all teh squad and asked which girl was romanceable andI told him everyone but Tali. When he asked why I told him " Becasue she's too afraid to ask Shepard out when Ashley's right there" fair assesment since her romance is only available when Ashley's not on the ship?

Shepard: In my experience if something goes to plan, then something else is hidiously wrong.
*explosions rock the ship.*

All Shepards are always right, you knows it, I knows it and ashley knows it. but you should give the CC a try, you'd be surprised how easy it is to make a good looking Mshep even with teh seriously limited optionsin comparison to Femshep.

I actually made a decent one a while back, but my Computer died and I lost the code.

edit: Also  - I've seen him with the default face so much that it feels wrong to have any other face than the default.

Ashley doesn't discriminate. although if she had a brain outside the 4th wall I'd think she'd appreciate a custom Shepard because of the work the player puts into making them and customizing them beyond the couple of clicks it takes to put together the profile of a default shepard of either gender.....I now wish to write a fic where the game is a movie and everyone's off camera. That would be hilarious to read or write imo. XD

Here's a snippet. Character-building for Shep.

Shepard finally found a moment to sit down and play his guitar. It had been a long time since he was able to play. Nearly eight years. He reminded himself with a sad smile on his lips. He set himself up on his bed, carefully strumming chords until he could make something that vaguely resembled music.

"That's a moldy-oldy if I ever heard one." Ashley's voice startled him and he stopped mid-chord.

"Yeah." Shepard answered, starting to play again. Ash watched his face, there was no outward change, but she could tell by that look in his eyes. When he played the guitar - Vera, he called it - the very rare instance that Ash caught him playing, his eyes looked like they were lost in a distant memory.

"You don't really like playing that in front of me, do you?" She asked, not sure if she was bitter or not. Shepard was very private when it came to that guitar, even with Ash.

Shepard stopped playing, his strumming hand falling limp. "No - it's not that." He placed the instrament on the bed and leant on his knees, elbows on his knees. "Playing it just brings back some old memories. Some of 'em are pretty painful."

Ash walked over and sat down next to him, resting her cheek on his shoulder. "You know you can talk to me about it, if it helps."

"It's... " Shepard scoffed shaking his head, "... sentimental - stupid."

"If it has you this far down in the dumps, then its probably not as stupid as you think."

"I was engaged," The statement came after a few long moments of silence. It was a huge blow to the gut for Ash. "Ages before I met you. All the way back when I just finished the N7 training."

"Why didn't you tell me?" Ash asked, sitting up straight and staring at his profile. He looked guilty, ashamed even, but continued none the less pretending he didn't hear the question.

"We were on Elysium, visiting her realtives before the wedding. I remember thinking that this girl was the one I wanted to spend my life with. She was smart, like crazy-intellegent, cultured. Almost ridiculously gorgeous and I would have gone to hell and back again for her and she used to love watching me play." He shrugged, his voice faltered only slightly, but Ash caught it. "She was - for lack of better way to say it - my high-school sweetheart."

"What happened?" Ash asked gently, the stoic, serious Shepard she had known was gone, all of his emotional armor was gone and she heard him sniffle, a tear forming in his eye.

"The batarian attack happened. I was at the military barrack - I think I was drinking with a few guys from basic, I really don't remember - and she was at her family farm on the outskirts. First place that got hit. They weren't even taking prisoners. She survived the attack barely but - " Shepard's left hand brushed past the artery on his neck. "A piece of sharpnel caught her neck and she bled to death."

"God - John. I'm so sorry." Ash whispered softly, unable to say anything else.

Shepard jerked his head towards the guitar. "She gave me that as an eighteen present. Year later I gave her a ring for hers." Shepard reached for the guitar and flipped it over, showing the inscription on the back. 'Mal - love you always and forever. Verity.'

"I don't know what to say." Ash said, shaking her head. Shepard nodded.

"It's all the past now." He said with finality, whipping the tears off his face. "That was then." He carrassed her cheek. "This is now, and I'm not letting you go anyway."



Hurray for deep emotional angle.

Still: how much beating can Shepard take before breaking down? That's the question. And I have the feeling ME3 is going to answer this question.

For my main shepard (John - WH Spacer), losing someone close to him like his mother or Ashley.

For my colonist? (Roxanna - Sole survivor). I haven't developed her enough for that.

My "main Shepard" is a warhero and spacer as well. Somehow I believe my Shep had a girlfriend or two before Ashley, but never thought about it. I mean, Standard-Shep is quite handsome, I can't believe he never had a GF before Ash. After all, he's in his thirties!

Losing his mother might push him greatky to a breakdown, but it won't start the breakdown itself. That's "losing Ashley" - especially when he couldn't help her, or when her death is his own fault. On the other side - Shepard is a soldier with special training plus a Spectre (with even more training). Maybe he can get over it somehow, but not without a shift in his personality.

For my Shepard's love life it went - First/highschool love, friend with benifits and finally Ashley.

Dunno, my Shep never had such a friend - it doesn't fit to a paragon Shep imo.

Also I wonder if Ashley had a friend before. Maybe she had, but never got to the "phyiscal stage" of her relationships before Shepard. Or she had just short-lasting relationships, because she's not so soft & lovey-dovey most guys like. Dunno. In my universe, Shepard is her first "real" love interest.

I should point out that my version Shepard was taking comfort from where ever he could after his fiancee died, but he eventually came to his senses and the 'FWB' agreed to end their relationship.

Why is it that I can write snippets on this forum like no tomorrow but when it comes typing stories up in word documents or files, its extremely difficult?

Easy.
Writing a snippet is just like typing down a specific thought. I do this nearly every day - as long as I've got ideas pouring out of my head, I can write stuff.

Writing a story is far more difficult, since you start with an idea (a scene, maybe a couple of scenes) - but you need to write far more to get everything in order. Two or three years ago I had a nice idea of a fanfic of a series (TV). The initial idea was a fight on a bridge that killed the lover of the hero. Writing that scene was child's play. Writing the rest of the story to that point was sometimes as painful as driving nails through your hands on accident.

Anyhow, I don't think I'm going to write full stories about Shepard and Ashley. It's far too difficult, especially since you lack audience - everyone has his/her own "canon Shepard" - my Shepard is male, so everyone supporting a female Shepard won't read that story. Basically, a Shepard+Ashley-story without any twists, changing romances and such will reduce possible audience to maybe 5 of 100.
