I figured Shepard needed more stability in his life, considered all the rubbish he's had to endure over the course of the series.

What better way to ground him then give him a father and mother that actually gives a rat's ass about him? Not very many parents care about their offspring in this day of age - shameful as that is.

Besides - figured that Ash needed/wanted to see where Shepard got his speaking skills from

Hypothetical situation:

Shepard stays behind on Virmire to saveboth Human squadmates. everyone moves up on spot on theships chain of command, who would likely be put in charge of combat, Kaidan or Ashley?

Kaiden is the superior officer - he'd be bumped up to captain or XO because Pressly is the Second in command after Shepard. Ashley is one of the more experienced combat officers on the crew. Or Anderson would take back the role as Captain despite being forced into retirement.

Kaiden will become second in command since Pressly is already acting commander. Ashley is just gunnery chief - I believe that's one of the sergeant ranks (NCO).

I know Ashley + Kaidan isn't canon and not exactly "liked", I just wondered how they would react after Shepard's sacrifice on Virmire. That's before Ash is admitting there's more than just the rank.

Something like this would kill me - but then I have no playthrough with a dead Garrus. Trap avoided!

Yeah, I don't either! Garrus is my bro to the end.

But supposedly there is supposed to be more squadmate dialogue and it's supposed to be deeper than ME2's .... so hopefully there won't be much "can't it wait for a bit? I'm in the middle of some calibrations" lines. 

I'll believe that when I see it, however. 

Though, you gotta admit... it's made for some good jokes and dialogues...

Yeah. Besides that, I have no playthrough with any dead squadmembers. They all survived the Suicide Mission. Still ... I wonder who's replacing whom. You can get killed EVERYONE but 2 of your squaddies (needed so Shepard can survive SM) in ME3.

Said those 2 squaddies are permanent squadmembers, your crew also will get Vega, most likely Liara and most likely VS (in our case it's Ashley). Makes five permanent members. I don't know how many squadmembers you can obtain at any given time, but I believe you might have up to six permanent squadmembers (like in ME) plus two (optional) temporary squadmembers that might join you for a couple of missions. That makes up to eight squadmembers.

If most of your guys died in ME2, you won't be able to obtain more than five permanent squadmembers (Vega, VS, Liara + 2 survivors) - and just Anderson as temporary squadmember.

Guess it's much harder to get through ME3 without your crew of ME2 ...
Or do we face any replacements for lost faces?

I have playthroughs with only 4 survivors and playthroughs where everyone survives... just to see what happens.

The good thing is... whoever you have for VS (Ashley for me), they won't be replaced b/c they are guaranteed to be in ME3! XD

Yeah, something like this. Maybe some characters won't get replaced, since they're quite unique. Miranda? Can't see any way to replace her with a similar character. Oriana is possible, but since she's a civilian with a "normal life" I can't see her fighting as a squaddie. She might, however, provide a side mission.
Thane could be replaced by his son.
Garrus? Nope.
Jacob? No idea. Did he have a brother?
Grunt? No way. His significance is too low overall.
Zaeed? Same as for Grunt.

So who knows? Maybe some will get a replacement, others won't.

I don't know if anyone's thought of this but, i was watching Starship Troopers recently and i was at the part where Rico and Dizzy are about to get "intimate". For some reason i just thought "i wonder what Ashley would look like as a redhead?"

Anyone ever picture Ash with that hairstyle? I don't really feel like searching through every page of each Ashley thread.

Anyhow, a red-haired Ashley would look weird. Ash comes with at least a hint "hispanic" and that means, dark hair works better.

We're peaceful ... for Liara-fans there's a Liara-thread, for Ashley-fans we have this thread here. I don't feel the urge being rude against Liara or her fans in any way since we all can have the LI we want.

I dunno, i'm don't think she'd look too bad.  Her skin isn't that dark so it could work.

Maybe it's just my increasing taste for redheads but when i saw Dizzy part of me thought of Ash(weird, i know).
